Tue Apr 19, 2005 12:08 am

Hi

Next month i am going to Santa Barbara for week. Now to get around i think i will need a car. So is it possible to rent a car being only 20 years old? I could bring my own insurance policy which says im basically covered for everthing.

Thanks alot for your help.

Probably won't happen. If you were a US citizen, and could prove you had full coverage on your vehicle you did own...Then some companies MIGHT rent to you. But I severely doubt you would be allowed to rent. Sorry.

Most companies AFAIK won't accept any other insurance apart from their own.

I can't think of anyone that would allow a 20 yr old to drive a rental car.

Maybe http://www.rentawreck.com/ ?

You'll probably have to look into smaller rental car agencies. Typically, the bigger agencies (Avis & Hertz) won't allow renters under the age of 26 never mind 21.

Unfortunately, you probably won't have luck, especially not being an American citizen. The car companies don't really care what type of insurance you have..they will still enforce the age 25 rule except in certain circumstances such as a job related trip (you would need proof from a company) or something like that. Even then I think they cut it off at 21. You could try enterprise, I have heard that they are a bit less stringent with the age 25 requirement, however they will hit you with severe additional fees and I think they only go down to 21 as well.

well, I am a member of rental car company Budget's program called "Fastbreak" & "PerfectDrive" PerfectDrive program is now discontinued... anyway, I am sure of age requirement to rent a car: 25. They do ask for my driver's license EVERY TIME -- I see them putting my birthdate from my driver's license on their reservation computer system. Strictly enforced!

I've seen some companies that rent to under 21 - it's mostly small companies though...the majors start at 21 minimally.

If you can get to LAX or SAN, you can rent from Atwest car rental. You have to provide your own insurance.

Try Advantage Rental. Also, at 21 Enterprise/National allowed me to rent. There will be a rather sizeable "under 21 fee." It is usually $20-$35 extra per day.

yup, rent a wreck will have to be your choice, if they will even let you do it, give them a call, or send them an email.

I am 23 and have been renting cars since 21. The fee is usually $10-$15 per day extra, it does vary though--NY is usually significantly higher if they allow a rental at all. Hertz does not rent to below 25 at all. I have rented BMWs from Enterprise and Mercedes from Benzo rental in Vegas all between 21-23.

Alamo Rent-a-car will hook you up. They rented to me under 21 and I have been loyal to them ever since.

It is under 25. Most large companies, particularly Alamo and Dollar, will rent to 21-25 for a 5-10 dollar per day premium and 18-21 for 15-25 a day extra.
