Your Favorite Comedian And British Comedy

Tue Apr 19, 2005 4:17 am

My favorite comedians are Robin Williams, Dennis Miller, the late Sam Kinison and Rodney Dangerfield. For British comedy, Some Mothers Do Have Em' and On The Busses with Stephen Lewis, Reg Varney and "Jack". Let's hear who your favorites are.

I used to like Peter Kay but a lot of material is getting tired now. He needs something else good to come out soon. My favourite at the moment, by far, is Paul Merton. He's brilliant.

Favourite comedy would have to be Only Fools And Horses, although I also absolutely love Men Behaving Badly. I think Martin Clunes is absolutely great, and I see his character, Gary, as a great role model! Which is probably a bad thing...

Lily Savage rules!

I split a gut watching her show.
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

Unfortunately Paul O'Grady no longer does Lily Savage! I also thought "she" was good. Although his daytime TV show, imaginitively entitled "The Paul O'Grady Show" is funny and very entertaining.

Rowan Atkinson, for individuals stand up comedy and Blackadder.

The Blackadder series are brilliant as far as shows go, but I love a lot of different UK comedies because they all have an individual humour that most US comedies have found hard to replicate.

Favorite British comedy is Monty Python's Flying Circus.

My all time favorite (not only British) comedy is "Trigger Happy TV"! Sorry, but there is no other TV show that makes me rolling on the floor like this, excellent humor! I really hope that they will broadcast new episodes of it, it is freaking hillarious!

A comedian to look out for right now is Omeid Jalili, the self-styled only Iranian comedian in the UK. He comes on stage as an Iranian railing at the absurdities of western life, and usually maintains that for about 15 minutes. But that's all, because as he says, he can't do the accent for any longer than that. In reality, he's rather posh, having switched into comedy from being a management consultant!

He's very, very good.

...ok these guys that made "Shaun of the dead" were brilliant, too!

I agree, Jalili is bloody funny!

Little Britain gets my vote for current comedy, although i do like The Office and Phoenix Nights.

Classic Comedy has to be Fawlty Towers and Some Mothers Do 'Ave Them!

I saw him recently on something and he is good, definitely one to watch out for in the future.

No British comedy lisiting would be complete without mention of the "Carry on..."
series of films, particularly the earlier ones, and the Ealing comedies. Both are quintessentially British and so the humour may not travel well.

Hands down for me it's John Cleese, Flying Circus, and Fawlty Towers. Graham Chapman was pretty damn hilarious, too. While we're at it, I'm also a fan of Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean and Black Adder). And Bill Cosby. And Eddie Izzard. And......  Smile

Has nobody here seen The Good Life from the late 70s? The script was superb, and Penelope Keith's Margo/Margot has to be one of the funniest characters ever on TV. And, of course, where would we be without Jennifer Saunders' Edina and Joanna Lumley's Patsy in Ab Fab???????????????????

Anyway, For standups, I am all about George Carlin, Eddie Izzard, Jeff Foxworthy (what can I say, we all like something lame), Gallagher (underrated for things not involving smashed fruit) and Steven Wright.

UK comedy is definately topped by "Life of Brian" and Mr. Bean/Black Adder/anything Rowan Atkinson is in

Denis Leary ("No Cure For Cancer" is still funny as hell 13 years later)
Ron White (A bit: My dog ran away for like 10 hours, and when he got home, just to piss him off, I took him for a walk.)

Now as a fan of British Comedies:

Father Ted
The Young Ones
Red Dwarf (Sci Fi Channel ought to be showing this series)
Chef!
Blackadder (I prefer Blackadder the Second and Blackadder Goes Forth)
Are You Being Served?
Vicar of Dibley

Here in the US, it was renamed "Good Neighbors". I remember watching in on the local PBS where I live years ago (Georgia Public Television has always had some sort of Britcom block on Saturdays for years), and have seen it a few other times when I had access to BBC America (I really wish I had that channel, the only way I can get it right now is too either upgrade to digital cable or get a satellite dish.). I still love the "The Good Life" spoof they did in the Young Ones episode "Sick".
