Anyone Been To Fiji?

Wed Apr 20, 2005 5:11 am

I've been reading quite a lot about Fiji lately. I was curious if anyone has been there, or have heard legitimate stories about Fiji, the place I'm reading most about it Taveuni, Island; in the northern section of the islands. I plan on going there at some point in the near future. I enjoy seclusion (beaches etc)

Any stories or information you'd like to share?
Thanks!

I was there twenty years ago and stayed around the Nadi area. Didn't like the place at all, though I must admit the idea of cops wearing skirts was highly original! The beaches where I stayed were polluted and far from the "paradise" that the locals kept telling me it was. Much preferred Tahiti, though it was much more expensive.

Brady- I've actually heard similar stories for Nadi, but I intend to go to more secluded islands than where Nadi is located.

What I've read so far are similar stories about Nadi. That particilar area of the Island is the driest part and less beatifull compared to the rest of the archipel.

You may find this link with accommodations and inter active maps very informative: http://www.fiji-island.com/index.html

Yes. I was there when I was 5. I do remember that the hotel I was staying at, The Sheraton, had a go-cart track there. The swimming pool was huge. The little Sugar Trains were very interesting to watch. I also remember getting lost on the NZ B742 and being taken to the cockpit and having my picture taken in the pilots seat with his hat on  Smile. Ahhh Childhood memories  Smile

For all the latest of Fijian and pacific politics, go to: http://www.pacificislands.cc/pm42005/ .

It is an excellent resource for those who wish to know more than what they read in brochures.

When I was 10, my dad took my brother and I. We flew into Nadi, stayed at the Sheraton for a night, then took a boat/cruise out to Castaway Island. It was absolutely mind boggling. So pretty, so warm, so fun, so perfect. I would recommend it to anyone.

I have been to Fiji an estimated 60 times. Been to most of the resorts, and pretty much everywhere else. Infact, half of my family comes from Fiji, and I live there for about a quarter of every year.  Smile

Taveuni is very nice. It is located on the opposite side of Fiji away from all the crowded touristy areas of the west, so it is very tranquil and quiet. Almost the 'real' Fiji...

Fiji is beautiful - I spent a few days there as the last part of a cruise round the South Pacific - we visited Labasa on Vanua Levu, which is not a particular tourist destination (we used a local school bus to get into town from the sugar wharf, where the ship docked) - lovely little town, reminded me strongly of South Africa (particularly because of the predominantly Indian population) - we took zodiacs down the Labasa river through the mangrove swamps back to the ship - wonderful.

We docked at Suva as well, and visitied the town, then drove round the coast to Nadi, and stayed a few days at the Regent (FABE-ulous - really lovely hotel). I loved the place.

Ok, on the western side of Fiji there are all the main resorts, where everybody goes to. On most of these islands, the only thing 'Fiji' about it is the location. The coral is often all dead, so when you go snorkeling, all you can see is dead grey coral at a lot of these island resorts. Sure these places are good to take the kids, maybe just to lay on the beach all day, but that's all the 'Fiji' you get.

Taveuni is a big island. Not many tourists choose it as their holiday destination as it is usually too far out. Because of this, tourism has only mildly effected the island. You will see a beautiful untouched side of Fiji that many people never see. The scenery is endless. But I do suggest also staying on a western island for a few days.

When going into Nadi town, make sure you stick to the main shops. I suggest Jack's Handicraft for souvenirs and also the shops full of tourists. Restaurants are ok. I know people who have walked into other smaller souvenir shops in Nadi, and haven't come out with their wallet and belongings. Be careful with taxi's, although they are cheap, make sure the driver always use the meter. Some locals will do anything to rip you off.

In Taveuni I suggest the Taveuni Island Resort. But for variety, stay at more than one.

Spent a month there, mostly on Castaway Island. I'd recommend that place. Lot's of oustanding SCUBA there, too. Damn good place.

Lots of bugs, though. They spray very well on Castaway but we stayed at this other Island for a week and I looked like I had smallpox by the time we left.

Went there in 2001. Stayed on the resort the whole time as we arrived a week after the coup (prebooked the holiday) and recommendation wasnot to venture out !

The resort and service was excellent.
By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?
