CDC: Moderate Obesity May Not Be Deadly

Wed Apr 20, 2005 11:53 pm

Latest release from the US Centers for Disease Control:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...0050420/ap_on_he_me/obesity_deaths

Interesting stuff, but given the way health studies seem to change all the time it's quite possible we'll soon hear that yes, even moderate obesity really is dangerous.

Naturally - one empathises with the less-than-perfect, in a distant, bemused sort of way.

Moderate obesity = a body mass index (BMI) of 30 to 34.9.

BMI = weight (in pounds) divided by height (in inches) squared, with the result multiplied by 703.

That's what I've been saying all along!
I knew this 'obesity' hysteria was a load of crap.
My BMI is 34 yet I have lots of stamina. I usually ride 35-50 miles a week on my bicylce and that's including the steep hills here in San Francisco. I have just as much energy today at age 31 & 240 pounds as I did when I was a 150 pound 10 grader.

By that formula my BMI is about 25...is there a scale or something that shows exactly what a BMI of 25 means? (or any other BMI for that matter?)

One problem with the BMI index is that it takes no account of a person's fat vs. muscle distribution. A very muscular person may have a significantly higher BMI than another person who is basically just pudgy baby fat, and almost certainly will be a healthier person (other things being equal), yet according to the BMI-centric view the muscular person will be considered less healthy. A more useful index would tie in BMI with body fat percentage; on the downside, it would be more complex and more difficult to use, in addition computing body fat percentage isn't easy.

Obesity is like pornography.

You can't really define it, but you know it when you see it.

People need to stop worring about these things. People need to stop having so much guilt with pleasure. The focus should be lots of sex, excersize, less work, good beer & cocktails, good food and enjoying life. That's what a healthy life is.
Too many people want these miracles to come from pills. There are plenty of drug-pushing pharmacutical companies that would be more than happy to market there drugs to the masses.
I see we shut them down by not buying there drugs.

Not surprising. Obesity is the media health-scare hype of the year.

Very true and the pharmacutical companies are making a killing off these people who are scarred to death of obesity yet to damn lazy to excersize.

No shit. I decided I wanted to lose some weight, I made some minor modifications to my eating habits (reduced quantities mostly) and started doing barely 30 minutes of exercise a night. I am losing close to 10lbs a month and I am down almost 3 pants sizes... It isn't a hard thing to do. People bitch they don't have the time or whatever so they just pop a pill that has who knows what long term side effects. I would rather make time than endanger my long term health.
Things were better when it was two guys in a dorm room.

I'm sorry but a fool and his money are soon parted. If the American public wasn't so stupid and insistent on letting the media scare it for no reason, this wouldn't happen. Serves them right...
