No one celebrates St. Georges day here, and those who do only started recently! Oh to be the patron Saint of such a miserable rabble!!

Does this mean I have to go out again? Incidentally, I went out last night with an A.net member and had a great time.

Well actaully this year I may, to the pub poste haste!

At lest more people seem to be aware of when it actually is now.

Still, breastbeating and proclaiming our greatness is rather un-English. We tend to leave that to the lesser nations...  Wink

Though I do confess, you are indeed an adiding shame of the English. Our onluy compensation is that we do not have to take all the responsibility.

I know, but really, where's the challenge ? Mocking the Scots is like clubbing baby seals, viscerally satisfying but with no real sense of achievement at the end of it.

Besides, having a pop at the English is fun too, especially on National "Let's Clip As Many Flags As Possible To Our Vauxhall And Look Like Chavs" day.

Are we amazed ? How worked up do you think England should get, celebrating the saints day (in a non-Catholic country) of an obscure Turkish martyr. OK, his martyrdom was particularly gruesome (according to Foxe's Book of Martyrs anyway), but still - he's not really an "English" saint, is he ? Wouldn't St. Edward the Confessor have been a better choice as Patron Saint ?

We must make allowances. Kirkie still believes that using a glass rather than drinking from the bottle makes him cultured. It wouldn't be so bad, but we're talking Thunderbird here.

Slight technical correction - it was the Normans, not the French. The Normans were little better then Vikings, so whoever won (William or Harold Harebrush) the result would have been the same.

OK so maybe not Edward then - there must be other English saints ?

There's Thomas Becket. But the trouble with him is that he was a religious fruitcake, and let's be honest, the last thing we want is some kind of bloody religious saint.  Yeah sure  Wink
