Airport Hotels To Avoid

Thu Apr 28, 2005 7:46 pm

Morning.

I just had my wife on the phone. She's staying in the Hilton at T4 at LHR prior to flying out to JFK tomorrow morning.

What a rip off! She just told me the prices for the mini bar.

£4.00 - Small bottle of Becks
£3.50 - Small bottle of still water
£6.90 - Miniature spirit bottle
£2.80 - mixer
£3.50 - diverse chocolates ie £3.50 for a Twix!!!!!

They have got to be kidding!!!  wideeyed

Needless to say she's off to T4 and WHSmith or someplace for a bottle of water ! Big grin

Anyone on elese found any extortionate prices in Airport Hotels?

I do remember the Crown Plaza at MAN charging me £7.00 for a large MacAllan malt, but thats almost bearable.

Cheers

Sounds normal for minibar prices pretty much everywhere I've been.

Like it or not, hopping across the street to a grocery store is a lot cheaper and always will be.

Have you never stayed in a hotel before? I find nothing out of the ordinary with those prices. This is where PC RA status comes in handy Big grin

Stayed at a hotel in New York where it was $15 for a bowl of cornflakes. Even if it was free I'd rather go down to a cafe and eat there, much better atmosphere and food!

You and me both kirkie, I am buggered if I'd pay those prices. Normal it may be, rip-off it is!

And Mr davidson, you are obviously far to well paid if you see nothing out of the ordinary with those prices! I know hotels charge prices like that, but it's only cos people pay it.

Ah well, I'll stick to my budget hotels with water on tap and runny chocolate from the store across the street.

Have a nice day all

It's not out of the ordinary for hotels though. If I saw those items priced like that at a corner shop then I wouldn't pay them. However, where else are you going to go to get bearing in mind you are at the T4 Hilton? I certainly can't be bothered to walk to Terminal 4 or catch a bus to a corner shop every time I want to buy a drink!

Like many things in life, more expensive hotels mean more expensive additionals. I don't think anyone buyng an Aston Martin every got a service for £50.

It's all about the business travelers! Hotels know the busy business clients don't even look at prices so they pretty much charge whatever they want.

I stayed at a few hotels out in London and never once even looked at my bill I just sent it right on to accounting. Even better than the minibar prices is paying 3 pounds to have a pair of socks cleaned  Smile

Charge it to the company baby!

If your not a business travel what are you doing even looking at the minibar? Go anywhere else and pay about 1/20 of the price.

The Malmaisson is quite expensive, but not that much. I think I paid around £4.00 for a vodka and mixer in the mini-bar. Usually, I don't have such luxuries in Travelodges,

I wasn't looking at the minibar, my wife was - and she's real mean when it comes to prices!!! lol

And believe me, if I thought I could charge everything to BACX I would.

They are so tight they won't even buy decent stationary or give us business cards. They do provide a Rover 75 as a pool car though, to run the 1/2 mile from the hangar to the airport - now if that isnt a waste, nothing is!!!

Anyway, I'm with you again kirkie, Travelodge rool ko?

Cheers

In furtherence to the original thread title...

The Russ Hill at Gatwick. Found a pair of underpants in the bed. And there was clearly evidence of some "scorching."

Not good.

Russ Hill? Used to be a euphamism for "easy shag" when I were a lad growing up around Gatwick LOL!!!

Lets face it, Airport Hotels are here to rip you off and pander to the "expense account " crowd. Not for the likes of us, swanning around for the fun of it.

The Metro at DTW. It is most airline commuters that stay there. I won't stay there now, but years ago when I did, there were animals inside the walls, break ins were a nightly thing. Anyone who is a commuter can vouch for this place. Why do people stay there? I have no clue. For years, it was a Travelodge, but they yanked the name when they found what they had on their hands.

Avoid "The Airport Hotel" at SJU. I stayed there when I had a day-long layover 3 years ago. The hotel is practically part of the airport, but what a dump! The place smelled of cigarettes and there was evidence of vermin. There were cigarette burns in just about everything in the room even though it was labeled non-smoking. Not much food available, save for potato chips and cookies out of a vending machine on the ground floor.

Another place to stay away from is a 'hotel' about 5 mins drive from BGI, I forget the name of the place, but again no food available for miles. They didn't even have cold drinks on hand. If you've ever been to a place like Barbados you know it's dry, dusty and hot so no cold drinks after a long day of hassles (CaribbeanStar Airlines erased my reservation and said I never had one even though I had paper tickets bought through American Airlines... I'll write another thread about that) at the Barbados airport the least I expected after paying nearly $80 US a night at that dump was a cold bottle of water. If you want a real meal and drinks you have to go to Bridgetown. There are also no elevators and at the very least it has no ramps for luggage so if you get assigned to the third floor you'll have to lug all of your bags up two flights of very narrow stairs. There is no security either, other than a giant tired looking dog and many items in the 'hotel' were falling apart like door knobs and windows. One of the windows didn't even have a lock on it so I was weary of leaving my stuff at the 'hotel' to go get a bite to eat. It is marketed as a layover place and now I see why. The place is soooo terrible you'll want to leave the next day.

http://www.rodder.com/rodpics/wallpaper/landscape/800/bates-motel-800.jpg That's the Bates Motel! Run by Norman Bates and his well preserved momma. Don't drop your soap in that shower!

Another establishment that won't make the top of the Zagnet list.

Avoid this one at all costs because once you check in, you won't check out!
