Portuguese People; English Speaking?

Fri Apr 29, 2005 5:05 am

Hello everyone

I'm flying tomorrow to Lisbon for a short holiday and I was wondering whether a lot of Portuguese people speak English. I just bought a language guide Dutch-Portuguese and I must say it's quite a complicated language, especially pronouncuation, so I'm wondering whether I can go around with just English and some basic Portuguese words.

Thanks a lot

If you say 'Nuno Gomes' and put your thumb up then you'll get preferential treatment. He's like a national hero I've been told.

It depends on where you go..more people in Lisbon speak english (esp. the younger generations) than outside the city where you may run into problems..but nothing that a few words in port and hand signals won't solve.

Usually all hotels and most restaurants in Lisbon will have at least 1 person that speaks English.

As always learning a few words in the local language is always a good idea..

have a great trip!

It's been a long time since I was in Lisbon - back in 1977 - but there was no problem finding English-speaking people. They really liked Americans when I was there. A taxi driver who took me around told me that a lot of people speak English, but they won't admit it to foreigners from some countries. But when they find out you were an American, they were eager to talk English with you.

This was 28 years ago, and things change. But I would imagine there are still a lot of English-speaking natives in Lisbon.

Beautiful city, by the way!!
