What Concerts Are You Going To This Summer?

Fri Apr 29, 2005 5:56 am

Let's hear 'em. Band and location and why you are going. With summer coming, it's time to get out to the ampitheater and see some live music!

For me, sadly, just one:

July 14, Dave Matthews Band, can't wait will be my 9th show!!!

I'd like to see DMB live. I've seen bits of them live on TV and they look like an awesome band.

I have about 40 concerts across 5 countries lined up for the summer, although I'll be sat behind a mixing desk on all of them. Then again I do get paid to fly everywhere so it's not all that bad  cheeky

None. [rant]I refuse to pay $26 to see the band in question (System of A Down) in some poorly ventilated venue, and on top of that, pay nearly 50% of the face value of the ticket in "service charges." Until these charges go down, I am boycotting touring concerts.[/rant]

TPASXM787 & KROC:
Dave Mathews Band played for free at a park near my house last summer.
For a free show it wasn't bad. Certainly nothing I'd pay money to see.
Lawrence Welk (R.I.P.) is someone I would have paid to see. He is legendary.

Planned for this summer so far is:

Alan Jackson
Toby Keith
Lynyrd Skynyrd

I'm not a huge country music fan, but those two guys get it done. My wife is a big fan of both. I'm seeing Skynyrd for the umteenth time, and then waiting for better shows to be announced. The only other one right now would be Dave Matthews, but I'm holding out for some more experienced, (read  old  ) bands to announce their shows.

Tom Petty, July 12, St. Louis

Neil Diamond has announced a fall tour.

You may not consider this a "concert", but I will see "Glenn Beck On Ice" on, June 13 here in Tampa. Tickets go on sale Monday.

And of course, some pics from his Christmas Show:

I'm sure Falcon would enjoy this one.

5/11 - Prefuse 73 / Battles / Beans

5/18 - British Sea Power / Feist / Roue

5/19 ?uestlove DJ Set

6/08 - Caribou (formerly Manitoba) / Junior Boys / Russian Futurists

6/16 - Ted Leo Pharmacists / Aloha / The Oranges Band

thats it so far, this summer is gonna be great.

i agree. entirely! i have said that i might go again, at some point and time. every time i have gone i have never heard warehouse or ants marching. the earlier works are my favorites. i guess i lose out.

on an off note-

the nice thing about tampa now is that with the Ford Amphitheater at the State Fairgrounds (that's the name, yes?) you kiddies there get to experience outdoor concerts. some of the best concert venues are the out door ones...unless you made it elsewhere...like Coral Sky/Mars Music/whatever it is called this year in West Palm Beach. i saw Stevie Nicks at the Ice Palace/Times Forum in 1998. it's pretty decent for an indoor venue.

the amphitheater in St. Louis unfortunately is a dump, but there are some cities that have great amphitheaters that i definitely don't hesitate at dropping the cash to get there to see a band i really like. Nashville's Starwood is one of them and Alpine Valley outside of Milwaukee are my favorites with E Center (Tweeter) outside of Philadelphia, Polaris (Germain) in Columbus and Deer Creek (Verizon) at Indianapolis being another favorite.

some of the smaller amphitheaters out there...like Promo West in Columbus, Scene Pavilion in Cleveland are great. if any body has other recommendations out there on where to catch a show, please let me know. thanks.

Soku39, yes The Futureheads put on a great show, I'd rate them as about the top live act around amongst the bands I generally see, closely followed by British Sea Power with their great eccentricity.
Bloc Party put on an OK show at Brixton in Feb, though there were effectively four bands co headlining there, so somewhat truncated.
We shall see, their album I found grew on me after a few plays.

I'd rate the scene generally in the UK at least, as the best in a decade, with few of the usual 2nd or 3rd raters following in the wake of the really good bands, with the exception of the dreadful The Others and that bunch who less then two years ago were a ska band, The Bravery.

Interesting that several US groups are doing much better here than at home, certainly Killers in this respect, but most of all Scissor Sisters, (who I personally don't like), but they are big here but can barely get arrested back home.

Eh The Killers are really big here, I don't like em too much. It's already been done before. I'd rather listen to Joy Division. I thought bloc party was pretty solid from the first listen, they're gaining popularity faster than the Shins did! (obviously now that they're all over MTV) I'm not quite ready to call them saviors of rock or anything.

Im also ecstatic to see that Ted Leo is crossin the pond again, especialy considering Aloha is opening for them (Ohio kids at their best!)

Interesting to see someone else on this website actualy listens to the new more obscure rock type stuff, I'd email ya, but it ain't up! haha.

Chastain is nice (I'd love to have table seats for a show there), but the bigger acts don't play there due to it's size and the noise rules. Hi-Fi Buys (I still want to call it Lakewood) Amphitheatre is nice, and like at Chastain, you normally end up parking a ways away. There's also an Amphitheatre @ Six Flags as well (Southern Star Amphitheatre), but most concerts there these days are part of festivals they hold during the season. Back before Lakewood was built, the Southern Star used to hold some major concerts. I remember being at Six Flags one day and Sting was in concert there. There are a few small amphitheatres in the Atlanta area, but the acts that play there are generally oldies artists whose day in the sun was like 30-40 years ago (Bands with like 1 original member in it if they're lucky) or country artists who had one hit a few years back.

I'm glad Killers are doing well in their home country after all, they got big here quickly and did a lot of tours in the UK, often a sign of less success back home, they are not too original (not much is) but entertaining.

Aerorobnz, yes Brixton is excellent, the floor rises as you go from the stage to the exit, so those standing further back still have a decent view.
Although I'm not so far due to be there much in the months to come, it usually is about the most common venue I go to.
Not been at Shepards Bush Empire much recently, seemingly bands are not playing there at the moment.
The Town And Country Club in Kentish Town, (now called The Forum) used be to a venue I went to a lot, not so much in the last 5-10 years though.

Last year, an excellent venue opened in Elephant & Castle, nearly the size of Brixton Academy, I saw Killers and Primal Scream there, not a lot going on there this year so far, however.
I never go to the Hammersmith Apollo for concerts, hate it, but not as much as Wembley Arena.

Delta717, I saw a show at the Knitting Factory in November 2002, Add N to (X).

Here is what I went to see last year, (save me adding to that 'fav rock band' thread).

The White Stripes, Alexandra Palace, Jan 20
Primal Scream, Brixton Academy, Jan 24
The Music, Astoria, Feb 4
Arthur Lee, London Forum, Mar 1
Stereolab, Islington Academy, Mar 3
Libertines, Brixton Academy, Mar 5, (Pre them imploding, support from Selfish C**t, who stood his ground despite a barrage of plastic bottles and mugs, before a now wet stage forced him off due health and safety).
Arthur Lee, Shepards Bush Empire, Apr 2
The Shins/The Stills, Shephards Bush Empire, Apr 24 (Not over impressed with these two groups)
British Sea Power, Shephards Bush Empire, Apr 29
Franz Ferdinand, Coronet, Elephant & Castle, May 7
Supergrass, London Forum, May 8
Graham Coxon, Electric Ballroom Camden, Jun 8 (the support were a discovery - The Futureheads).
Killers, Astoria, Jul 8
Primal Scream, Coronet, Elephant & Castle, Aug 19
