What Is London's Ugliest Building?

Sun May 01, 2005 2:56 am

What is the ugliest building or complex in all of London?

In my first year here in London (from the USA), I have seen several candidates for London's ugliest building:

1) Guy's Hospital Tower at the Guy's campus of King's College London (adjacent to London Bridge Station)--the all-concrete, 30+-storey tower with a lecture theatre projecting out of its 30th floor (by the way, I attend that same campus!).

2) Brunswick Centre--the ugly concrete shopping centre/apartment block that sits across the corner from my student residential hall (near Russell Square).

3) Many of the concrete apartment blocks all over the city.

Please nominate your ugliest-building-in-London candidate!

Ben, how can you not like the erotic gherkin?! It's better than the other buildings around it, like the Aviva Tower

The ugliest building has to be the Lloyds Building in the City of London.
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

So many to choose from...

...Centre Point, the Lloyd's Building, the South Bank Centre, any number of ghastly council tower blocks in the run-down areas...

Regrettably, there are many ugly buildings in London, mostly replacements for those so many buildings destroyed in WWII. Far too many of those post-war replacement buildings were just slabs of gray concrete thrown together and often they are not even very good structuraly. The Post Office Tower is not very nice, but does have a function I believe, for TV and radio transmission towers. The Lloyds of London building is very ugly from the outside - I think a frenchman designed it - but is quite functional from the inside.
There are of course many excellent buildings in London, from the Banquating House, St. Paul's Cathredal, the Parlament buildings, the many rows of West End townhomes, to numerous small gems.

Nope. There's a building that's really similar in Barcelona, it's just more colorful and with less glass in it, not too far away from the new opera house. Maybe some Spanish a.netter could help me.

This I have heard and I am sure the property prices are premium.

The complex as a whole though is incredibly awkward to actually navigate on foot and asthetically a disaster. It is this kind of 70's planning that I detest.. what on earth were they thinking?

As I said before, Guy's Hospital Tower is one of the ugliest London towers.

I've been inside it myself, and it's actually a time warp for me! The interior looks so much like any American hospital would have looked like in my childhood (1970s and 1980s)--very plain and utilitarian. I've been in hospital so often in my childhood that my memories are vivid. Guy's Hospital reminds me so much of the "old" Riley Hospital for Children (Indianapolis, IN, USA) and St. Louis Children's Hospital (St. Louis, MO, USA) (before the new SLCH opened in 1984). Back then, the dominant interior colour was white, and decor and furnishings were sparse. The interior atmosphere was cold and sterile.

The same can be said for the interior of Guy's Hospital. Now you have an insider's view of Guy's Hospital.

Response to Ryanb741:

I'm enjoying my life at KCL--I'm based at Guy's campus (site of the infamous Guy's Hospital Tower), studying biomedical sciences (the anatomy department).

I have exams all this month.

I've made friends with people here at KCL, including some of their professors.

And what is wrong with having a building that to those of a certain mind, looks like a dildo?
At least you are talking about it.

When Christopher Wren finished St Paul's cathedral, did everyone say "it looks like a giant tit".
As for Nelson's Column, bit of innuendo there? 'Column', standing tall, Nelson eh? Him and that Lady Hamilton, nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more!

One thing I do not want, is anything that is approved by 'architecture expert' Prince Charles, if he likes it, it's shit.
(Like those soppy faux trad villages of his).

Back to London, while the 60's saw some right horrible concrete nasties, The Trellick Tower in West London is seen as a classic, well built and now, desirable to live in.
Away from high profile Central London, Peckham Library, many surburban art deco style tube stations from the 1930's, all good.

Bad include, Portcullis House, tries too hard, and Prince Charles might possibly like it. National Theatre needs sorting out too.

But will someone either raze the shell of Battersea Power Station, or do something with it, I'd favour the latter, but since 'Maggie's favorite businessman', (a charlatan called John Broome IIRC?) did not do anything with it, as he promised, despite the hype 15 years ago, nothing has happened.

That bizarre slopey place they keep Red Ken in nowadays is also pretty hideous.

Given that when anyone dares say something about your beloved Australia you have a tantrum, it's a bit hypocritical of you to suggest blowing up our Queen's home, QFF. Sauce for the goose.

Actually, the building I really hate is the Tower Thistle. Not that it's that awful in itself, but who in God's name allowed it to be put up next to the Tower and Tower Bridge? There's even the opportunity to get the architect! Off with his head! Big grin
