Phuket Or Penang?

Mon May 02, 2005 9:57 pm

Hi there!

At the moment I'm putting together my RTW routing and on on my way home I have some mileage left and could do SIN-Phuket-SIN or SIN-Penang-SIN.

Anybody can tell me what I should do?

Thanx in advance,

Sander

Not sure about Penang because I've never been there, but a couple of years ago I went on a holiday to Phuket for about a month...Really liked the place and recommend it to everyone. Great little Island.

Many great beaches and nice street markets...Also, there are many tours to other small islands nearby like Phi Phi, James Bond island, Similan Islands...They are all great, Krabi is also really nice.

Enjoy your trip!!!

I too have only been to Phuket, but really did have a great time. Quiet if you like that sort of thing, lively if you don't.

Didn't get down to Penang though.. ran out of time. Have heard mixed reports of the place though.

definitely phuket. besides they could use your euros for the rebuilding of the island. i also fancy krabi (not far from phuket) as well.

I thought the same thing, although I will be there in about a year from now. But wasn't Penang also hit by the tsunami?

Two totally different places with completely different vibes. Phuket is more lively whereas Penang is a bit more sedate. Phuket definitely has better beaches if that's what you're looking for. Penang is a bit more culturally interesting. Hard choice - I like them both.
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

Haven't been to Phuket but we went to Penang last year. Great place, quite busy in the city centre (Georgetown) but along the coast it is beautiful and pretty quiet.

Georgetown is the cultural place on Penang, lots of old buildings and very cheap shopping; Batu Ferringhi is your beach resort on the north coast. It's about a half hour taxi ride between the two.

Shopping is incredible in Penang - designer clothes and electronics extremely cheap, in Penang we ate a 12" pizza and a pitcher of coke at a Pizza Hut for under £2.00!!

Batu Ferringhi was hit by the tsunami but nowhere near the same extent as Phuket was.

I'd certainly go back again, the best holiday we ever had!

Noel.

Phuket hands down. Nice beaches, great entertainment. I heard Penang wasnt much of a vacation spot...

Here are some pics I took of my recent trip to Phuket last November.

....travelled all the way to Malaysia and ate in Pizza Hut?  weeping  Georgetown has some of the best restaurants in Malaysia. Seek out those that specialise in Nyonya cooking, a style peculiar to Penang, Malacca and Singapore.

Phuket = beach, nightlife, sex
Penang = culture, shopping, food

Though it might be the case some 15 years or so ago, many Malaysians no longer see Penang as a "vacation spot" but more of a cosmopolitan city. For great beaches, most of us head for Langkawi, Redang, Tioman or Pangkor Island.

Between Phuket and Penang, i'd say go for Phuket. Is your RTW ticket valid on SilkAir's SIN-Langkawi-SIN? If that's the case, you might want to consider Langkawi too.

I have exactly enough miles left to do a return SIN-Phuket/Penang on SQ. And I can only choose out of a list with destinations and Langkawi, Redang, Tioman or Pangkor Island wasn't one of them. I BTW can only fly with NZ, VS and SQ with a note that I can also use flights of MI.

It is the ticket known as The Great Escapade

The website is currently unavailable due to redevelopment issues but after I contacted one of the airlines I learned the ticket itself is still available.

Thanx for your input.
