Accordign to "Travel and Lesiure" its the "New Costa Rica" Whatever that means.

I have never been, but i can imagine that it would have amazing stuff considerign its so big (relatively speaking) and quite big Carribean coast.

To be honest havent heard to many flattering things Managua.

You guys need to get you politicians in line.

That being said, i think that Nicaragua has a LOT of potential.

If you look at my profile, I'm headed up to Matagalpa (flying into MGA) this June. Kind of scared though.. seeing as how it's the poorest country in it's hemisphere (no pun intended), and it will be my first trip out of my 'comfort-zone', with hopefully many more to come.  Smile

Just like Costa Rica all the beach property has been bought and is going to be largely developed for resorts and retired americans and europeans.

Actually that is Honduras.... Haiti is also poorer. The thing with Nicaragua is that there extreme poverty and extreme wealth.. The middle class is barely appearing. You can see carton box houses in one corner and see a mansion with a mercedez in it a mile away... Its changing, little by little, but it coming along.

I've been to Nicaragua before. Last year, I flew into Managua and stayed there for a few days, before packing it up and heading down to the coast for a little surfing. I enjoyed the surf there because of how un-crowded and underdeveloped it is. I would rather go to Nicaragua than say, Costa Rica if I had my choice.

Not yet, but I'd love to. People say it's a really nice place, with beautiful beaches and architecture. Lots of traditions and I've heard of very good food also. One of my best friend's dad is from Nicaragua (but has Costa Rican citizenship) and I can tell you they're really nice people. And smart, really smart! for example, my friend's dad is a well-known doctor here in my city, and my friend who is a nutt, has won the National Scientific Fair and Math Olympics. Yup gold on both, thats what I mean with smart. And he says he's proud to have Nicaraguan blood on him. Facing the reality, here in Costa Rica 80% of the population is racist against Nicaraguans, and don't see it as a nice country. 80% of Costa Ricans are ignorant unprepared high-school dropped a$$holes anyway. Well it's true, a relevant porcentage of all the bs going on here is done by Nicaraguans... but as I've always said... Nicaragua is cool... all the crappy ones are down here already, and those still there are coming soon  Smile. Political inestability is a problem also, but hey, this is the XXI century, kick their a$$es now! Nicaragua has to stand strong against that!
The only thing I have to say about all that nationalism is how you guys don't want to give us the border river side belonging to us. El respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz!

That said, can't wait to go to Nicaragua, specially Montelimar and the volcanoes. The lake looks awesome from the air btw.

MGA: when did you left Nicaragua? why? how often do you go there?

Regards!

Sure I'm trying! there are really good prices for trips from here. I might join one soon... on the other hand, did you knew that Nature Air (regional airline here) flies to Granada on a weekly basis? the flight has been there for a while... I guess they're doing good?

Been there twice.

The last time it was getting much better as a bare bones tourist destination. People are very nice, but poor for the most part.

Costa Rica is a better destination unless you are interested in being very self sufficient in 85% of the country.

Very pretty country, especially the lakes in the south.

I spent three months in Honduras last year, from there I did a highly peculiar trip to Nicaragua:

Two months before I went back home, I had been to Ecuador. Upon arrival at TGU, the immigration guy stamped only 30 days in my passport. Unfortunately, I only noticed this later, otherwise I'd have asked him to give me the 90 I'm entitled to. Anyway, so I had to go leave the country and come back. The nearest border from Tegucigalpa is with Nicaragua, at Las Manos.

So I took the bus from Tegus to Danlí, then another bus to El Paraíso, then a taxi to the border station Las Manos. I told the driver to wait for me. I left Honduras and collected my exit stamp. Had to pay an illegal "exit fee" of 3 USD.

I then proceded to Nicaraguan immigration. Since I obviously wouldn't stay overnight, I had left the address filed empty. The official wanted to know why. I said I was just doing a day trip. No way he said, once you enter, you can't leave the country. (Which is of course bullshit, but anyway.)

Got back to Honduran immigration, same dude as five minutes before. He didn't blink an eye, demanded 5 USD "entry fee", and gave me an entry stamp (with 90 days, yay!).

Mission complete? Nah. Back in Honduras, I got into talking with a couple of off-duty customs agents, both Honduran and Nicaraguan. Told them my story, and the Nicaraguan said like the 72 hours minimum stay requirement would be waived for a "fee" of 20 USD. Muahaha, sure. Ok, I decided to play his game to get the Nicaraguan stamps as a souvenir, parted with the money and my passport, and got the latter back a couple of minutes later with two neat green and purple Nicaragua stamps.

On the return, I managed to catch a direct bus from El Paraíso, got back to Tegus in the evening and had spent a kind of interesting Saturday full of new experiences and impressions.

The poorest one indeed, is Haiti.

Don't be scared, just use common sense as in most LatAm countries, and always try to keep a low profile.

Exactly! Pretend you know where you are and what you are doing... If you see somebody doing something bad..... It means it is, dont stop and take pictures... Pretend like you are used to it!

MGA- Yeah, I've partied in Managua before. Helluva place actually. I got really, really wasted, which probably wasn't that great of an idea. Good beer down there as well.
