Four? WTF? A government-issued ID and a Social Security card I can understand, what two other forms of ID are out there? I hope that this doesn't affect the plan here in Georgia to make driver's licenses valid for 10 years instaed of 4 (Unfortunately, I just had to renew mine, and it would be until later this year that the plan will take effect.).

Not only that, but there may soon be measures in place that would allow them to get driver's licenses!!!

I just received my DC license last week and I had to show the following...

1) Previous license (I was registered in Wisconsin)
2) Passport or birth certificate
3) Social Security Card
4) Lease, Mortgage and/or proof of residence
5) Utility bill under my name for my current residence (for parking permit)

My license will expire in 2009...

It doesn't seem like this new bill is changing anything, at least in the case of DC.

It only took me about 20 minutes to register myself and my van (including getting new plates) in the district. So what's the big deal with the new requirements? Is it that hard to show 4 pieces of identity?

From the article:

"States still could give licenses to illegal immigrants, but they would have different designs or colors to alert security officers that they are unacceptable as IDs for boarding planes or entering federal buildings.
"

hmm the DC DMV is located in a federal building...kind of a catch 22.

I am not even positive I have 4 forms of ID.. Honestly if someone can fake 2 they can fake 4, it just takes longer. I could make up a fake SS card myself in a matter of minutes, same for a birth certificate.

What does this have to do with mexicans crossing the border?

I'd rather make the driver's education better and the driver's test more difficult. Would do a lot more for safety than this.

The one we get in Germany doesn't expire, it is valid forever. Well, until you expire yourself, I guess.

The one I got at 19 in Norway expires on Aug 19 2082. My 100th birthday. Guess I have to renew it then. Kinda funny that it is good as a photo ID that long from now. Wouldn't mind looking young my whole life I guess  Wink

My mother's civilian federal employee ID had the same picture on it from when she was hired on 23 years ago and it never expired.

In 2002 they made her get a new one, because the picture wasn't in color.

I am not sure Texas ever makes you change your DL picture. My girlfriend has had the same picture since she was 16 through several address changes and one renewal. They didn't even make her take the eye test when she renewed on her 21st birthday.. so her liscense is still unrestricted, even though she needs glasses to drive.

Ohio made us shoot a new one any time we got a new liscense... Then again my Ohio DL was a much better ID card than the easily fakeable Texas one.

I just got my license renewed about three hours ago, and I needed:

-- My old license
-- Passport
-- SS card
-- Proof of residency, in my case a letter mailed to me from Selective Service

In NJ, we have this convoluted 6 point system we have to follow for getting a license, which you can see here. Also, we have to retake our picture every time we get a new license, and mine is good until the last day of 2007.

In New Jersey, you just have to point to a black dot on a white board to qualify for a licence.

All you need here is a photo ID. passport/gun license/old driver's license and a proof of address bank statement. The license is valid for 10 years because it is photo ID so has to change with you.

As noted in post #11, and living in New Jersey, we probably have some of the strictest personal idenity, citizenship/legal residency requirements to get a driver's license. Also, as many agency locations, there are trained people there to review critical documents for authenticy. Several of the 9/11 assholes were able to get full picture ID New Jersey Drivers' Licenses and as a result of that and a concurrent need for other license reforms including requireing only picture ID licenses. For many years well after picture ID licenses were put inot place, mainly for seniors they were not manditory so they wouldn't have to visit a DMV facility to renew. We have had serious problems with illegals from all over the world whom have or have attempted to get NJ State Drivers' licenses. The agency alsos issue non-drivers state ID for use by people whom need government issued picture ID to fly, building access, other need to prove identity and has similar id and citizenship/legal residency requirements as license.

All you need here in Costa Rica is have gained the Road Security course and hold a Costa Rican ID ("cédula"). Other than that being at least 18 years old. It sucks they don't issue licenses to younger people.
It's however pretty hard for foreigner to get one.

btw... I need one. NOW!!!

I drive without one. I'm responsible, at least. Anyways, long live 3rd world freedom!!! lol.

not necessarily a bad call. . . . cut down on fake driver's licenses . . . Captveur is right, if someone can fake 2 IDs they can fake 4, but it will certainly be more difficult.

I think 2 forms of ID and 2 or 3 "proofs of residency", e.g. Rent, mortage, utility bill, phone bill, etc, might be prudent.

I don't care - I have all the ID I need, I've got all the proof of residency I need, this won't impact me. And if it keeps one single illegal asshole from obtaining a drivers license, fuck it, drive on.

Those of you that really believe illegal immigrants easily get Driver's License should double check your facts.

Let me give you an example. I applied for a California DL during my first year in the university over there. I was legally in the USA and yet it took me over five months to get my license. They asked for a valid SSN, current American visa and Mexican passport and a document from the University where I was studying. Despite the fact I had all my papers in order, the DMV told me that they had to check my info with the INS and that would take a few months. Finally, they gave me my driver's license but until they were sure that I was legally in the USA.

No complaints here, after all driving is a privilege and not a right. However, I think that current requisites are good enough to keep DL out of evildoers hands.

To get my Utah drivers license I had to show my social security card and birth certificate. (But seriously 4 IDs???????: let's see, passport, green card/birth certificate, social security card, can't think of a fourth) I could have easily showed up with someone else's social security card and birth certificate to get my license to receive my first official picture ID. What bothers me more than the lack of security to get the license is how easy it was to pass my drivers' test, more people are going to die from lax DL restrictions than whatever the result of giving terrorists and/or illegal immigrants drivers licenses.

btw... I'd rather have illegals with real IDs and actual drivers' licenses than those walking (and driving) around without one.

thats no lie... Most car insurance companies require you have a drivers liscense to get insurance. No liscense, no insurance. That means if one of those illegals trying to get to or from one of the jobs a US citizen doesn't want runs into you he has no insurance to cover it, you are left holding the bill for something that wasn't your fault.

Just give the damn illegals liscenses.. maybe require some sort of proof of residency or proof they have been in the same address for a few months.. otherwise there is no point in having an address on the thing.

I still think a federal ID card is a good idea for all CITIZENS. If you are worried about your movents or something being tracked that can already be done through your ATM or credit card, use of your drivers liscense, or even your cell phone... Maybe even something as simple as putting a picture on your social security card and making you renew it every 7 years or something.

Alaska has mandatory insurance laws . . . hefty fine if you don't have it.

It doesn't mean shit.

Get in an accident with an uninsured driver, your insurance company pays out the ass, and your rates (may) go up.

Uninsured driver gets a ticket and a fine, and likely doesn't pay either, and keeps on driving, new dent included.

Who loses here???? The insured driver who is playing by the rules.

Ahhh, but I disagree my friend . . . big time. Problem is. you're playing by someone elses rules.

I mentioned this in another thread not too long ago . . . .

It deals with the "Operational Art of War", the talent of using tactics and strategy. One becomes versed with that and it never leaves, and it can be used in every endeavor . . . . .

You set the plot, set the plan, stay within the rules, and execute the proper maneuvers to force the situation your direction.

I've done it over and over . . . never burn a bridge, never start a fire, be prepared for every consequence (some will call that being being negative, it's not, it's being prepared), hope for the best but plan for the worst or unexpected and be prepared to act on it.

I can't tell you how many times this has worked over and over.

Get to know the opponent, whether that be a person or a situation. Learn to understand it, and then learn how to devour it. Work like a champ.

I've never jeopardized my integrity, never intentionally hurt anyone, and I think I did ok. At least my conscience is clear. . . .
