Help: Who Should I Vote?

Thu May 05, 2005 5:30 pm

Ok, am still undecided on who to vote for today. So if anone could help me by putting forward some valid arguments for each party then I would be much obliged. In the constituency that I live in we have the choice of the following:
Scottish Labour
Scottish Conservatives
Scottish Liberal Democrats
Scottish Nationalist Party
UK Independence Party
Scottish Socialist
Green Party
and a couple of others, cant remember their names.
I intend to vote at about 1pm and then go get hammered  Wink

I'm not going to presume to offer you advice as to who to vote for.

I would suggest you ask yourself what you want the most. Just as an example (and nothing more), do you really, strongly believe in full Scottish independence, or are you fairly happy with the current set up? Is it healthcare, student loans? Local issues?

Find what's most important to you, and vote accordingly.

(these aren't questions for you to answer publicly, they're things you should just think about)

If you have to ask who to vote for maybe you shouldn't vote at all.

Nah, dont tell me who to vote. Just some arguments for each party. I think it will be either Labour or the SNP. Probably the SNP because of the Iraq situation

Does the SNP has any resonable program, besides rampant 19th century style nationalism? You know program for Scotland's Independence Day +1???

It's actually a bit unfai to characterise the SNP that way. Although some of their followers would have that rampant nationalism, the leadership don't. They want a relationship of equals with England, as close friends but separate countries (I would say, is that as opposed to the current situation where Scotland actually runs England  Wink ?), but realistically, most people in Scotland do not want independence. They are happy with it as it is. The SNP tend to do moderately well, because they are the principal opposition to Labour in Scotland, not because people actually believe in what they want.

Actually, its probably the Lib Dems that are the main opposition. Even if Labour and the Lib Dems do have a coalition in the Scottish Executive  Wink

I will be voting for the only party which can offer economic stability, based on its record to date. I'm  old  enough to remember 4 million unemployed and 15% base interest rates, record home reposessions and negative equity.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

If you want to gamble with our success in the fourth largest economy in the world, then choose one of the others. I won't be. I can't afford to.

You'd fit in over here, where apathy takes the day and where the basic obligations and fundamental responsibilities of an informed, educated citizenry are taken for granted.

I suggest you move to West Palm Beach, Florida.

I'm afraid it's not an uncommon attitude here either Slider. There have been various TV campaigns running recently encouraging people to vote by pointing out that "If you don't do politics, there's not much you do do", but I'm afraid some people will always think that way. Watching the people of Iraq queue up to vote, despite threats of suicide bombs and the like, put us in the West to shame.

Indeed. If you are to lazy not to give up 2 mins of your day to vote, then you are either a lazy bastard or should be deported to Iraq, Afghanistan or Rwanda..
I think that Nighthawk should be deported...lazy git

no need GKirk, my vote has been cast. It was a toss-up between SNP and Lib Dems. I decided on lib dems in the end, I decided getting rid of Blair was more important than Scottish Independence. Ill vote for that in the scottish elections.
