It's Cinco De Mayo!

Thu May 05, 2005 10:51 pm

Well 05.05.05 is finally here!

What are you all doing to celebrate?

Me and my buddies are getting 4 Corona 20-packs (I believe that's the biggest) and some bottles of tequila to celebrate the Battle of Puebla.

What are you guys doing today?

It's actually a triple holiday, of sorts; in addition to being Cinco de Mayo, today is also Ascension Day and Holocaust Remberance Day.

Yup, and it's also the Feast of St. Pius V. Anyways, I plan to go to a good nearby taqueria and have some good comida mexicana!

It's actually my 20th birthday. And what am I doing? Drinking American beer (Blue Moon) by myself. What gives.

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone.

Well, at least 05.05.05 won't come up for another hunnert years...

A college roomate once opined that Mexicans are the only people that know how to cook dirt and drink dead worms, but I have found that I am in love with true Mexican quisine and am lucky to have an "authentic" foodery not too far from the back-forty.

So, for the Cinco celebration, I wish all revellers a good time (partially a celebration of not eventually speaking French as a national language, no?) and stay safe and perpetuate a proud heritage.

Regards...Jack

Well good for you but show some respect. It is a very important holiday for us Mexicans and if you don't care, they you shouldn't be posting here.

Also, I forgot to mention in my earlier post that it is 5/05/05. We will not see this happen every again because it will another 1000 years before it occurs again! Historic event.

I would also like to mention the Holocaust remembrance. While myself or my family weren't directly affected, my thoughts and prayers are with all of those who were affected by this horrific event in history.

Another THOUSAND years? Guess my (or your) math's off: I was thinking that 05.05 in the year 2105 (05.05.05) minus the year 2005 (05.05.05.) would equal 100, not 1000.

Well guess what, with Cinco De Mayo, came a huge racial fight at our school, we even got an ambulance and two fire trucks, how lucky we were. It was a very bad fight, would have been much worse had the paramedics and firemen not come and scared the shizzle out of everyone.

I was on the road and the radio Jockey said that the holiday celebrates a Mexican Army defeat of the French Army at Pueblo.

If it is true, I might start celebrating more then I have in the past.

I just came back from a week of VE day memorial services in the Netherlands (I spent the week with Canadian WW2 veterans and our living history group). In the Netherlands 5th of May is Liberation Day, the day the German occupational army surrendered in 1945 and a big holiday. May 4th is rememberance day for all the the war dead, also a holiday.

I wonder how many Americans know what Cinco de Mayo is for... and if Mexicans treat our Independance Day as simply an excuse to get wasted?

Just a ponderment.

Some of my Mexican friends said it was an uprising of Mexican farmers against the French. More of a minor battle than anything. But, Americans use it as an excuse to sell beer. Why not? I'm always up for a good party Big grin

True they did a wonderful job of keeping the British away from Rhode Island during the last year of the war.

The US Insurrection was used by the French simply to needle their old adversaries the British. Remember the US/British beat the French prior to the revolution during the French/Indian war.

Well specifically from Brabant, not Holland, in the Netherlands... come on, all seriousness aside it was a good excuse to drink on Thursday night. And what is a Dutchman doing in TLH? Sometimes I ask that myself... only for one more year though!
