Today 60 Years Ago: World War II Ends!

Sun May 08, 2005 10:33 pm

Exactly today 60 years ago, World War II, one of the darkest chapter in human history, found its end with the capitulation of the Nazi regime in Germany.

-Let's respect all the victims of this war

-Let's forget about small problems between nations today (such as the unnecessary US-Europe bashing)

-Let's work on a future with a strong international organisation that represents the highest values of the humans and has the power to punish regimes who do not accept these global rules.

I know this will cost a lot of money but I believe that nations could save a lot of money by working together instead of acting against each other. This money could be saved to establish above mentioned international organisation (most likely, but not necessariliy the UN).

What are your thoughts about this day and what are your ideas for a future world?

Are we forgetting that there was also a war in the Pacific, which was also fought by the "allies" and did not end until August '45!

I believe you mean September 2, 1945, onboard the USS Missouri. That was when Japan signed their unconditional surrender. The war didn't 'officially' end until April 1954, though.

Mixed, since for half of Europe "liberation" in May 1945 (and earlier) meant only arrival of new tyrants.

Correction: the war in Europe ended. A great achievement, to be sure, since Scramble-brains Schickelgruber had blown himself away along with the Third Reich, but the war raged on for 3 more months in the Pacific, culminating with the dawn of a new era in weapons, and an uneasy 50 year "Cold War" with the USSR.

Yes, unfortunately. It is, in my opinion, one of the most important things to get rid of these tyrants. Modern examples for that is North Korea and also Africa (they kill a tyrant and the next day a new one is having all the power).

Therefore we need to have a strong UN with the possibility to get rid of the tyrants and we need to change the organisation of the UN too (for instance the veto right is a problem).

One can never underestimate the impact of WWII in almost any regard.

It catapulted the US into a superpower role and permanently (for better and worse) shifted the foreign policy approach of the nation.

For Europe, it remains vivid everywhere, as the EU today is testament to the lingering effects of WWII. The spectre of nationalism is so prevalent and feared that nations willingly abdicate soveriegnty lest they have the slightest hint of showing the kind of runaway bastardized nationalism that presaged Hitler's rise to power.

And it absolutely shaped Asia as well.

Even though I'm not one of those who were liberated, it's a good day nonetheless. Even with all the differences (petty or otherwise) that exist between the U.S. and the above nations (Russia vice USSR), I'm much happier and feel safer with the current governments in the EU as opposed to a Nazified Europe.

Sounds great! Any concrete ideas (instead of the usual let's just get Bush out/keep him in comments)?

Yes of course, like mentioned above, a stronger UN would help much. The UN needs to get a new organisation and needs to end its own problems immediately (i.e. corruption). Then the nations need to support the UN even stronger and accept it as a "world organ" that has the power to punish nations that fail to accept global values. A strong UN would be the best legitimation to end regimes in Africa, North Korea etc.
