How Fast Do You Drive?

Mon May 09, 2005 5:14 am

Okay lawbreakers, how fast do you drive?

Say the limit is 70 mph. How fast are you going to push your car before you set the cruise control? Me? About 79 mph.

(hope there are no cops watching!)

I enjoy the 85-90 range. Its landed me two tickets... but I've never been in a single accident. (knock on wood)

It depends on the road, conditions (weather and traffic) and if I'm in a hurry or not. But I usually drive about 10 km/h above the posted limit. However, I have been know to drive quite a bit quicker then that. I had my Peugout at about 220 km/h on the autobahn, and here in Canada I got caught doing 130 in a 50 zone (I was young and stupid), funny thing is that I only got a warning!

Around town, I stick to 5-10 over. On the interstate, however, with the 65mph limit, I usually stick in the 75-80 range, occasionally going up in the 80-90 range, depending on traffic and other factors.

Yeah, I try to limit myself to 80 also, but if there is a large pack going 85-90 down the highway, I'm probably going to stick with them. Safety in numbers. Big grin

I like the safety in numbers game too. Sometimes you get a group of cars on our highways doing about 140 km/h, where the limit is 100. In England I was cruising normally at 90 to 95 mph, where the limit is 70. I knew I wouldn't get points on my Canadian license.  Wink

  • Limit 30, I drive 30

  • Limit 50, I drive 55-60

  • Limit 70, I drive 75-80

  • Limit 100, I drive 110

  • Autobahn without speed limit, I drive as fast as I can (when conditions allow it)

EXTREMELY FAST! I used to have a lead foot. On an open highway, total disregard for any speed limit. The fastest I’ve personally driven is 140 MPH. Now, I’ve mellowed out, respecting speed limits and rarely go 5 over.

My 60 year old father has a need for speed and his Honda S2000 does a good job of fulfilling it. My mom told me about the 100+ MPH ride to church. Go figure.

Speaking of speeding, he got pulled over last summer in a small town in Maine. The policeman asked for his DL and registration, returning to the cruiser. After a while, my mom commented he sure is taking a long time. The policeman returned with the proverbial “Sir, step out of the car, please.”

Turns out my dad had 34 year old warrants for traffic related misdeeds. At the time he had a Massachusetts DL and plates and just figured the hell with a few tickets. The policemen pointed out the warrants are older than him. The policeman let my father go without first advising he is prohibited from driving in the state of Maine.

I recall that thread last year about a user’s classmate arrested for doing 205 MPH on his crotch rocket.

I'll usually stick to within +/-5mph of limit on urban areas where cops are bound to hang out with speed guns.

Urban motorways with 50mph limit I'll drive 60-70mph.

On the motorway I am trying to keep it to 24mpg, so about 85-90mph although on 5am breezes up the motorway to LHR I have driven at 130mph (limit of 70mph!) and not seen a soul for 5mins with the exception of the odd truck. Put on a decent mix and turn it up loud, that's when I truly enjoy driving  Smile

In town I do stick to within 10 km's of the speed limit, and within about 5 km's if it's a 40 zone. It's on the highway that I generally have my fun, with an eye open for the police, and any potentially dangerous situation.  Smile

On the motorway, I'll stick around 100mph, it's an automatic ban if you are caught going 30 over the speed limit in the UK, but they have to clock you at an AVERAGE 100+ over a measured mile, so if I hover around 100, then I will have time to just pop it down to under 100 so won't get a ban, just a ticket if I get caught.

Also as my car is now on it's 3rd engine, I don't take it above 5,000rpm in 5th gear too much, although I did blast her upto 110mph/5,800rpm last week on the way to BEN's with the roof down on the M4 with the stereo blasting out.  Cool

Around town, I drive to whatever the speed limit is during the day maybe +5 depending on conditions, but in the middle of the night on the way to work, it's speed limit +20.

Really p!$$es me off though when you are stuck behind someone going 10mph BELOW the speed limit - even more so at 0400.  gnasher

-At home in Illinois, usually the speed limit (but being flexible up to 10mph over the limit). Same here in VA and most other states in which I drive except the following:
-In Ohio, I'm always watching my speedometer. I was over quite often my last time through, but those Ohio cops have some vendetta going on, it seems.
-In California, especially on 101 (and sometimes I-5), I'll usually do between 75-90, sometimes higher - doesn't matter if I'm in S.D., S.F., L.A. - it seems like those California cops don't give a rip like cops in other states.

    I'm a Utahn, I drive fast.

Rush Hour on I-15 into Salt Lake City I can easily hit 85 mph, when out of the city I usually go 90-95. I got a ticket for going 88 in a 65 recently. Understand this is how we roll in Utah: we drive like crap, but go really fast anyway.

I usually drive about 10k or 15% faster than the limit (whichever is lower):

    50k becomes 60k
    70k becomes 80-85k
100 becomes about 115-120k or so (depends on the road)
110 (highway speed here in Alberta) becomes up to 135k.

However, I drive exactly 30k in playground/school zones.

I usuall stick to the speed limits in the city (if the limit is 60 km/h, I drive 62-65 km/h), but on the freeways I go 120-130 km/h, when the speed limit is 110...and the cops always seem to get me...damn  Sad

Depends. If it's in the city, probably 5 or so over.

On the highway with speed limits of 70mph, I average 75-85.

I've been pulled over few times in my life, some were definitely causes for a ticket, and I've never gotten a ticket.

Good old lesson my father taught me:

Treat the officer like he's a human, treat him like a friend who's protecting you, rather than an enemy out to get you. (Greet him, ask him how he's doing, and make friendly chat)

99% of the time, that will get you out of a ticket. You just can't do anything about a pissed cop or a bad cop though.

I alot of the time I do about 5-10 km/h over the posted limit, but also alot of the time either on the limit. The fastest I have ever done is 140km/h, from when I entered the motorway to just before I turned off the motorway and was approaching traffic lights on SH1 north of Wellington, about a 5km stretch, that was when I was on my learners 4 years ago.

There was a time when a speed limit for me would mean a minimum speed, but a heck of a lot of speeding tickets, and probably old age creeping up on me, has cured me of that. These days I stick exactly to the posted speed limit, and I love not having to be constantly on the lookout for speed traps. Makes for much more relaxed driving.

If it's 70, I won't go any faster than, say, 6 or 7 MPH over the speed limit. I don't think any faster I could handle unexpected situations.

    At 60 MPH, I'll drive 69.

    It kinda depends...

My car has a bit of go in it, so suburban where our speed limit is 50km/h unless otherwise stated I am usually hitting 70km/h. I stick to the speed limit on streets with a posted speed limit, the theory being that Police will stick to these streets because they are obviously at a posted speed for a reason!

    Highways - 105 to 110 kph.
    Freeways - 110 to 120 kph.

Speed record for my driveway - 50kph! (and its not that long at all!)

The highways around here (Washington D.C.) are all limited to 55 mph.... usually I drive around 65 or 70, or wherever I find I get the best gas mileage! And my car isnt a guzzler.... I'm just responsible like that.

....then again.... I do like to do some mad speeding when I am in the right car...say the M5 or 911..... then I have trouble keeping it under 90....especially if someone wants to try to beat me...

When i drive a car i speed like Sabena332 said, but things differ when it is a heavy atriculated lorry which is trailing "behind" you. You have to respect the on-duty and resting hours, and never to exceed 85 Km/H otherwise...

Well, after spending nearly $500 on two speeding tickets over the last 2 years, I am now only going 2mph over the limit on highways. You'd be amazed at the gas mileage you can get when you slow down!

I could've had a really nice radar detector for $500!

My car is not overly fast so I tend not to push it but usually in a 30 i'll do 30 (or maybe just 35 if it's a non-urban 30), in a 50 i'll do 60, on the motorways i usually cruise at 80-85 depending on conditions.

Fastest I went was 110, i've hit over 100 on the M4 heading for LHR coz I dint wanna miss all the heavies coming in! That was 5am tho and it was pretty damned quiet.

Around 100mph on a motorway (car won't go any faster!). Around 40mph on a 30 road. Whatever speed on all other roads.

Put on a decent mix and turn it up loud, that's when I truly enjoy driving

Totally agree!!! A decent song whilst cruising on a motorway sure is what driving should be about!

I do like to do some mad speeding when I am in the right car...say the M5 or 911.....

    Isn't an M5 and a 911 overkill for a student?  Wink

But an S class isn't, right?
I guess that's what happens in the end, you start thinking about the beginning.

I go whatever I feel is comfortable. It's usually 10-20 over up here in New England.

I've only had one ticket. Pay attention to your surroundings and drive ahead of yourself. I usually spot cops a half a mile off, and I can't tell you how many times that's saved my ass. Watch for lots of brakelights all at once. If you see that, slow down. etc etc. Oh, and did I mention that my car is red? yep.

Better not be in the left lane.

True, not far all people. But then I can't drive two cars at the same time...

My 60 year old father has a need for speed and his Honda S2000 does a good job of fulfilling it. My mom told me about the 100+ MPH ride to church. Go figure.

Sounds like post midlife crisis. I didnt know those go-karts Honda made actually go a above 90mph? I pass them way to fast to notice  Silly

Depends on my mood here really and if im driving the Blazer, which I do most of the time. If the limit is anywhere from 25-40mph I drive around 12-15mph over. If the limit is 40-55mph I do 15-17mph over and if the limit is 55+ I do 17-40mph over...

    On I-290 or 90 I usually cruise at 88-92mph

I started driving slower when I got fed up of paying the fines, increased insurance premiums and the rest. The two or three week wait after being 'flashed' by a camera isn't good for the nerves either.

I do agree with the AA that motorway speeds should be increased as it's actually not a good speed point for contemporary car engines and gearboxes to be limited to 70mph here. Eighty is a much more reasonable limit.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...
