How Far Can Your Car Go On One Tank Of Gas?

Tue May 10, 2005 1:43 am

Being one that drives around 30,000 miles a year, I like to keep my stops for gas to a minimum. I don't stop for gas unless I absolutely have to, the fuel light is on, and the needle is on the red mark.

Driving a Honda Civic helps with my gas bill, and I like to see how far I can stretch a tank. I used to be pretty happy when I could reach 400 miles on one 13 gallon tank. However, this past year that number has been growing.

Last night I filled up 12.4 gallons, and had 521.4 miles on the trip odometer! That was definitely a record for my car, which translates to 42 miles to the gallon. And my Civic is not the hybrid model!

So here is my question: How far will your car go on one tank, and why/why not do you like to stretch it out?

Thanks!

I can go as far as until the tank is empty!  Big grin
Seriously though, I've got a Mustang with a 4.6L V8, so my 60 litre gets me about 450-500km.

312 miles with a strong tail wind.

24 gallons times 13 MPG equals 312 miles.

I'd like to get a larger gas tank so I could get up to 400 miles per tank.

Maybe consider more reasonable car? 13 MPG is ridiculous waste.

I do mostly city driving, so I average 20 MPG. With an 18-gallon tank, I average 360 miles/tank. If I'm crusing long distance on the highway, I can go about 500 miles/tank.

I have never run it all the way empty but I usually don't fill up before the trip odometer is showing 300mi. It comes out to something like 25+mpg city and almost 33 highway.

I manage about 800-850 km on one tank with my golf TDI. I would have probably made it from DUS-CPH on a single tank, but I got too scared, and decided to fill up just before entering Copenhagen  biggrin .

Pretty good, I think!

I don't generally run it below a half tank, but I got 30.5mpg in mixed driving during the very cold winter we had here, I suspect it's more now that the weather is warmer.

So... 30.5 * 14.5 = 442 miles.

With my '97 Crown Vic w/a 20 gallon tank doing all highway driving (at 23.5 mpg); I can probably go as far as 470 miles.

The best mileage I got out of my '76 LTD (18.2 mpg w/a 24.2 gallon tank) again, all highway, would yield a 440 mile cruising range.

I get around 20-23 MPG Dodge Intrepid 2.7 with 17 Gals, so I can run around 340, and have gone to 370, but that was fumes!!!

I don't like to stretch it as it's fuel injected and we all know what a joy it is to get those started after they run dry.

I get about 400 miles from a 45 litre tank. So I'm averaging around top 30s to 40 miles per Imperial gallon.

Dunno what the new one's going to be like, but I'm hoping for the same or better.

Holy s--- Superfly, that luxury beast has a 24 gallon tank! I know you are quite environmentally responsible, I believe you mentioned in another thread about taking mass transit to work. That goes to show a lot – especially when one owns a car.

The 10 gallon tank in my MX-5 Miata allows me to go a little over 300 miles. The best fuel economy I ever recorded was 34 highway, using cruise and obeying the posted speed reasonably.

Oh, and an Airstream is probably the most expensive travel trailer in the world.

As for efficiency, one can do many things. Keep your car in tip top shape for one, combine trips also. It’s not too hard and even saves headaches when you put some thought into it.

'Fly,

I don't have access to curb weights for a '74 Marquis vs. a '77 Town Car readily available. I do have a booklet on the '76 Ford/Mercury/Lincoln line at home that gives the curb weights for each model. I can give you the somewhat similar comparison between a '76 Town Car vs. a '76 Grand Marquis tomorrow.

I am doing pretty badly for fuel economy in my '92 Volkswagen GTi...

I average between 420 and 440 km on about 45 L of premium gas...and yes, my car recommends the use of premium.

Now if I wasn't so hard on the gas pedal, I can get about 520 km per fill (and I have done it too, by the way).

One of my vehicles is a rather old Volkswagen Diesel pick-up. It has, according to the Commercial Vehicle Data Digest, a 65 litre tank. I once drove it on one tank for a bit over 850 kilometres, and even then it did not even take 60 litres to fill it up again, so in theory it should go quite a way over 900 kilometres, maybe even close to 1000 kilometres, but there's no way in hell I'm going to push it that far. The guage already goes into the red at just over 800 kilometres, so it's really a leap of faith to keep on driving with the needle in the red. To everyone that uses miles and gallons instead of litres and kilometres, just do the math.

Cheers!

I think I might get 12-13 mpg in the city and about 17/18 hiway with my 2001 Durango... but I love my truck and wouldn't get rid of it for the world...  Smile

I actually laugh at people who cry over their SUV's poor gas mileage... like what did these people think would happen when they bought it...?

And... if you can barely afford to pay the monthly payment on the SUV, how can you possibly afford all the fuel they use? I've never understood the reasoning of these people... I paid cash for my truck... there's a huge difference there.

I get around 280 miles out of my tank for general driving, but I don't know how big the tank is off hand. Thats when I use 98ron Unleaded, I get about 230 miles if I use 95ron Unleaded. I also get more now since I fitted a new exhaust back box too.

I always fill up when the needle gets to the top of the red, and I fill it right to the top of the spout every time, never taken it lower than that.

My mate constantly drives around with the fuel light on, even when he puts petrol in, he puts the minimum in to get the fuel light to go off !!! I cannot drive like that !.

I used to drive that way as well - I'd get an extra 20-30km's just by doing that. A full tank of gas is about 120lbs. That adds up over time. I read somewhere that an extra packet of sugar carried on a 747 used an additional gallon of fuel over the course of a year.

My SHO does 500+ km per 60L fill up, and but I'm not exactly "grannie" shifting either.

It's a 60L fuel tank in the 156. It does 12L per 100km give or take a bit for city driving, so that's about 500km per tank, more like 600km with open road driving burn.

I can squeeze out about 525 miles on 11 US gallons, but I usually fill-up around the 500 mark. On the days when it's my turn to drive, my car is often transporting 3 people. If only we had an HOV lane. Thanks to the carpool, I only have to fill-up once a month or so. Bring on $10/gallon!  Big grin

Technically, I should be able to go ~400 miles on a 16 gallon tank (if its ALL highway).... in reality I fill up around every 280-300 miles... because 80 percent of my driving is City driving.

Depends on which car I'm driving....

My Mazda6 has a usable range of 280-300 miles with a fillup of around 14.75 gal.

My Tacoma is around 260-270 with around a 15.5 gal fillup

The wife's Tribute is around 250 and around a 14gal fillup I think.

I miss her old Civic which seemed to run forever on a tank.

RE: How Far Can Your Car Go On One Tank Of Gas?

A full tank of gas is about 120lbs. That adds up over time.

I've seen a chart in one of these car magazines showing what factrors contribute to increased gas consumtion. I don't remember the figures exactly but I believe it was something like:
winter tires - 5%
a/c - 7-10%
driving with windows rolled down - 10%
driving i.e. with a skibox on the roof - 10-15%
towing a trailer - 20-30%
driving with tire pressure lower than prescribed - up to 20% (which is the case of as many as 2/3 of all cars in Europe)

I read somewhere that an extra packet of sugar carried on a 747 used an additional gallon of fuel over the course of a year.

I love these calculations!!! I remember reading that one airline saved a load of money of the course of couple of years be putting i.e. only 3 instead of 5 olives into their salads served inflight.
