Who Will Be The Next U.S. President?

Tue May 10, 2005 12:09 pm

Any thoughts ?? Who would you like the next President to be ?? Who is in the running ?? I haven't seen much in the media ,and I'm curious who it might be . Personally I'd like to see a less confrontational President who could bring the West back together again ,especially with Canada's soon to be Conservative (I hope ) government .

It seems to work because if most active A.net posters hate someone they seem to win.

Don't know, don't care. In exchange for the right to vote for an executive once every four years, I'd like the right not to think about it for three. There's almost no way to accuratly predict who will even run in 08, so why bother?

Could be Rudy versus Hillary or Santorum versus Pelosi for all we know.

Any discussion this early is just silly. In 1989 who would have guessed that Bill Clinton would become the next president?

btw, Hillary doesn't have much support among liberals.

I think it is too early to tell. While Sen. Hillary Clinton seems to be the prime canidate of the Democrats, there is a long time until the election and already the attack dogs are out to hurt her before the election. While she has made some acknowlegement to the moderates, she would still keep Abortion totally legal, and keep other hard core liberal 'values'. Here reputation as a 'liberal' would continue. Also, I suspect the country isn't ready yet for a woman as President especially the wife of a former President whom had the sexual morals of an alley cat and destroyed his creditability.
The Repbulicans seem to be unsure of whom to push for 2008. There are some good possible canidates, but they need the opportunity to get out there. Republicans currently control most state governments and have gained a huge following with their 'high morals and low taxes' matra, something hard to beat.
We don't know what will happen in the next 3 years. Iraq, Iran, Afganistan, oil problem, economic problems, social security, the potential battles over Federal Court appointments or - God forbid - another 9/11 event all could hurt or help any canidate.

Brace your ass DC10GUY... as much as I hate coming off as an extremist, and as much as I'd like to believe the Republicans don't have it in 'em; a tactic like that wouldn't surprise me.

Given their willingness to redistrict to improve their chances around election time (See:Texas, et. al.) , their willingness to change the rules on a whim to protect their own (See: The DeLay DeBacle), and their willingness to corrupt basic tennets of American Constitutional law (See: The PATRIOT ACT), it's not so far a stretch to believe they'd play the rules to ensure the Bush dynasty does not end in 2008. "By any means necessary..." and all.

Both parties have been doing this for over 200 years. Gerrymandering will be around a long time and it is common practice from whatever party is in power. I guess it is only bad when Republicans do it though.

Quoting Lekohawk (Reply 25):

they would need quite a few Dems to get on board with the idea. It isn't easy to change the constitution, there is a reason for that.

Wow... way to quote the GOP playbook verbatim. Yes, sir, I am aware of the process required to amend the constitution. I, unlike many of my classmates, was wide awake for 9th grade civics. But who needs to change the constitution when they can just pass a bunch of laws that are unconstitutional, and then cry foul at the "activist" judicial system when they try to do their jobs and strike them down? "Hey, do you not see we're in the middle of trying to make the lives of millions of Americans hellish? Get out of the way you crazy activist judge, you!"  Smile

I like you Captoveur, you've had a lot of thoughtful things to say, and I appreciate that... but really now... can you not step back from your party long enough to see that they're breaking rules the Democrats, or hell, even the Republicans in the past, would've never thought to touch?

Don't get me wrong; McCain probably could carry a national election. Problem being-- he'd have trouble ever getting that far because he doesn't sit well with the core of the party.

Same thing in reverse for Santorum:
a shoo-in so far as Republican ideals go, but there's no way in f^ck that he could win the nationwide level.

John McCain has two strikes against him.
-The right wing of the GOP primary voters. Lots of early Southern primaries
-His age.

Hillary would absolutely get massacred in a presidential election. Think about John Kerry's flip-flops and multiply that by 10. Not only that, but thanks to her and her husband's debacles, controversy just seems to follow her--and much of it is just. The whole campaign would be a disaster before it even started. Hillary couldn't get "red state" voters to go Democrat if she handed out $50 bills.

I think the GOP candidate will be a relative unknown--not Jeb Bush, Santorum, McCain, Frist, Giuliani, etc. That being said, I think Giuliani will be the VP candidate for whoever runs. Personally, I'm hoping that current Massachusetts governor, Mitt Romney, ends up on the Republican ticket for President. He's socially conservative, but not a "Santorum" extreme. He opposes gay marriages, and like most Republicans will fight against it. Like Bush, personally, he's against abortion, but will not take action against it. He is also a devout Mormon, who claims he hasn't uttered a curse word since high school. He's very fiscally conservative and has turned around the mess that was the state of Massachusetts. Like Bush, Romney formerly was a very successful businessman. A Romney/Giuliani ticket would be pretty tough for anything the Democrats could come up with--two people from strong blue states who have broad support in both.

For a brief overview on Romney, you can check this link out:

Bush was also "successful" in the energy business, skimming a hefty stock option in a company he was a corporate officer in. The firm was scamming the public and shareholders with it's performane, and the week before they came clean, Bush took his options-before the bottom fell out.

How Martha Stewart of him. Yeah, some great businessman, Jcs. You certainly can't see straight when it comes to this man, can you?
