I Have A Liberal Arts Degree; Want Fries W/ That?

Tue May 10, 2005 4:55 pm

Well I suppose it's a few hours premature, but as of tomorrow afternoon I will finish my last final exam and walk out of the Duckering Building with a major in English and a minor in business with a marketing emphasis from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

It took me five years total; I originally started as a geography major and enjoyed it until I found out that the guy who taught most of the classes and was my advisor was a real horses ass. I switched to English after my sophomore year on the advice of my father's business associates who said that there is a distinct lack of people in business who can communicate and write effectively. And strangely enough, they were right: I was recently hired to work in the marketing department of a health insurance company in Anchorage.

What amazes me is how the last five years have gone by in the blink of an eye. It seems like only yesterday I was a country boy freshman from Oregon sneaking beer into Moore Hall and getting drunk with my friends Big grin I wouldn't trade my five years in Fairbanks for anything; this town has given me more than I ever could have dreamed of.

And two years from now as I'm slugging away at work, I'll probably want to return to UAF and do it all over  Smile

So, thank you Fairbanks. I'm through patting myself on the back now.  Wink

Hey, found out today that despite not attending class since spring break ended I still pulled a 3.5 average (2 A's and 2 B's) at UAA, so next december I should graduate. I have only one class left then I will have my AA in General Studies, A BBA in Global Logistics Management and a Minor in Aviation Technology....Only took 8 years of school.

What is the next step a Masters or second Bacholers?

Hey... congratulations, guys. Glad to hear you made it.

I'm sitting here wondering whether I should keep working or take a couple hours' nap. I'm working on finishing an MBA and my thesis needs to be finished at the end of the week, so I've been here at my desk pretty much since yesterday afternoon with the only break being a trip to Starbucks. I never realized sitting for long periods could be so exhausting, but it is.

Looking forward to joining ya...

A thesis, that sucks.

Well I am not quite there yet.

Are you sure you want to be on the caffine when writing that?

After being out of school for 5 years (after taking a total of 14 years and 4 colleges to get my undergrad) , I just took the GMAT and am exploring grad schools. Strangely, one of the writing assessment questions on the GMAT asked me to defend or attack the notion that education is the currency of success in the US and the world.

Trust me, in today's economy, just a B.A. in any liberal arts field is close to useless. So sayeth the guy who picked up his BA in political science last May. Take a year off, go to a tech school to pick up a "marketable" falback skill (paralegal, for instance) or go to grad school straight out of the gate. Ah well, come August, I start my M.A. program and get to be every undergrad's worst nightmare.....a TA

Ironically enough I found this political cartoon just now and thought it fitting

When ever I have to dome some sort of hard math for something, I usually announce that I'm a Liberal Arts major, and the only math I needed was to backtime a song into the top of the hour news at my college radio station.

Damn, I'm old....

So have I, but I've also had some downright flops...case in point, my French TA (who actually taught the section) who was getting her M.A. only because Daddy was paying for it, chose French because it was the only thing she was mildly good at as an undergrad (other than her sorority, tee-hee). She hated France and the French and only wanted to visit the French-speaking Pacific islands to "work on her tan." Yeesh...I wonder why I cut class so frequently that semester?

Unfortunately, it seems more and more that just having an undergrad degree is close to what it was 10 years ago just having a high school degree.

We recently hired 4 new employees and posted our announcement for undergrads just out of college...after it was posted for just 1 week we received 350 resumes, almost half from students just getting their graduate degrees. As a result we didn't hire any undergrads and all 4 new hires have graduate degrees, 2 of them from Harvard and Yale. Starting salary: $35,000... (don't ask me how you can pay off your studies and live in DC on that salary)

If you're an employer and you can hire a person with a graduate degrees from an Ivy league school for the same salary as what you would pay a fresh undergrad which one do you think you're going to take?

I think you can be a public school teacher without much effort on those credentials.. It's not what I do, but after seeing my fellow IT people fall to the wayside of outsourcing, it's something I'll be considering doing when I re-start college this fall.

in DEFENSE of a liberal arts education...i have found that many people i have interviewed with support the liberal arts education because it produces a person more well rounded than "more focused" counterparts. i addition, many employers enjoy the general ability of most liberal arts grads to be such "quick studies" when given any new situation.

i am a history major from a liberal arts college yet i have done investment banking at jpmorgan and morgan stanley, financial reporting at financial times, paralegal work at one corporate firm, now manage pro bono programs at another corporate firm, and just appointed as an artistic director for a music festival.

so yeah, i would say i have only been able to do all of these jobs with my liberal arts background.

I think you just nailed it. While having limitations, a liberal arts degree is worth more than most people give it credit for.

Congrats! It's nice to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

As for me, I am taking some time off before returning to school. After going full time for the last 5 years, I'm ready to go do something different. I know that if I went straight the grad school right now I wouldn't get very much out of it personally. Plus, I will probably be going for an MBA program, and most of those actually prefer that you have some real world experience under your belt. I've been thinking pretty strongly about the program at Alaska Pacific in Anchorage.

Oh, absolutely. This thing is pushing 300 pages (part of that is transcripts of interviews I did), and there's no way I can get it written without the stuff.

Yawn.

Congrats! A UAF grad actually getting a job related to his degree! That's a rarity. I just realized that I was a DA for Bartlett when you were in Moore. Chances are your drunken debauchery ended up in the DA logbook (especially if you visited anyone in Bartlett).

So when are you moving down to Los Anchorage? I'll be heading down in August to study ATC at UAA.

As a former city kid from L.A., I do agree with your sentiments towards Fairbanks.

Actually, I don't think I ever visited Bartlett my first year, but I did live there my sophomore and junior years. It's a miracle I never got a MIP while I was in the dorms.

Edit: I'm headin' down the Parks on Monday, the day after graduation. Looks like the weather will stay nice for the weekend too for all of my family coming up. It's 80 frickin degrees outside my window right now, in the shade!  Big grin
