Tony Nominations For 2004-2005 Season

Wed May 11, 2005 4:25 pm

recapping the top awards

BEST PLAY--
Democracy
Doubt
Gem of the Ocean
The Pillowman

My vote is for and I predict Doubt the winner of this one.

BEST MUSICAL--
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
The Light in the Piazza
Monty Python's Spamalot
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

My vote is for Spamalot, hands down.

BEST PLAY REVIVAL--
Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Glengarry Glen Ross
On Golden Pond
Twelve Angry Men

I'm going with Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

BEST MUSICAL REVIVAL--
La Cage aux Folles
Pacific Overtures
Sweet Charity

My prediction is La Cage Aux Folles

BEST SPECIAL EVENT--
Dame Edna: Back with a Vengeance!
Laugh Whore
700 Sundays
Whoopi, the 20th Anniversary Show

I predict 700 Sundays will win this one. This is the solo Billy Crystal show.

BEST ACTOR IN A PLAY--
Philip Bosco, Twelve Angry Men
Billy Crudup, The Pillowman
Bill Irwin, Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
James Earl Jones, On Golden Pond
Brían F. O'Byrne, Doubt

If I had to guess, I'd say Bill Irwin.

BEST ACTRESS IN A PLAY--
Cherry Jones, Doubt
Laura Linney, Sight Unseen
Mary-Louise Parker, Reckless
Phylicia Rashad, Gem of the Ocean
Kathleen Turner, Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Toss up between Cherry Jones and Kathleen Turner.

ACTOR IN A MUSICAL--
Hank Azaria, Monty Python's Spamalot
Gary Beach, La Cage aux Folles
Norbert Leo Butz, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Tim Curry, Monty Python's Spamalot
John Lithgow, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Hank Azaria does not belong to be in this category. He should be featured actor. I would have to say this is a close race between Tim Curry and John Lithgow, but I predict John Lithgow. He is a truly talented man. It's nice to see Gary Beach get a nod, especially after Daniel Davis was axed from the La Cage production.

ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL--
Christina Applegate, Sweet Charity
Victoria Clark, The Light in the Piazza
Erin Dilly, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Sutton Foster, Little Women
Sherie Rene Scott, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Christina Applegate deserves this one, as I far enjoyed her the most. Victoria Clark is tough competition, as is Sherie Rene Scott. Erin Dilly and Sutton Foster are sympathy nods.

FEATURED ACTOR IN A PLAY--
Alan Alda, Glengarry Glen Ross
Gordon Clapp, Glengarry Glen Ross
David Harbour, Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Liev Schreiber, Glengarry Glen Ross
Michael Stuhlbarg, The Pillowman

I have no idea who to pick on this one.

FEATURED ACTRESS IN A PLAY--
Mireille Enos, Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Heather Goldenhersh, Doubt
Dana Ivey, The Rivals
Adriane Lenox, Doubt
Amy Ryan, A Streetcar Named Desire

I predict Dana Ivey.

FEATURED ACTOR IN A MUSICAL--
Dan Fogler, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Marc Kudisch, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Michael McGrath, Monty Python's Spamalot
Matthew Morrison, The Light in the Piazza
Christopher Sieber, Monty Python's Spamalot

My guess is for Christopher Sieber. David Hyde Pierce of Spamalot should have been nominated in this category.

FEATURED ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL--
Joanna Gleason, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Celia Keenan-Bolger, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Jan Maxwell, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Kelli O'Hara, The Light in the Piazza
Sara Ramirez, Monty Python's Spamalot

Sara Ramirez I thought was the highlight of Spamalot, so my vote goes for her. Joanna Gleason, while shining and lovely, her part in DRS is damn near useless and has no point. I have no idea why she is in this show, even though I love most of her work.

DIRECTION OF A PLAY--
John Crowley, The Pillowman
Scott Ellis, Twelve Angry Men
Doug Hughes, Doubt
Joe Mantello, Glengarry Glen Ross

My prediction is for....Scott Ellis.

DIRECTION OF A MUSICAL--
James Lapine, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Mike Nichols, Monty Python's Spamalot
Jack O’Brien, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Bartlett Sher, The Light in the Piazza

Mike Nichols -has- to win this one, hands down.

BEST CHOREOGRAPHY--
Wayne Cilento, Sweet Charity
Jerry Mitchell, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Jerry Mitchell, La Cage aux Folles
Casey Nicholaw, Monty Python's Spamalot

Jerry Mitchell for La Cage Aux Folles. The choreography for this show was amazing.

I look forward to seeing Spamalot when I'm in New York next month. I'm a little surprised Cheyenne Jackson wasn't nominated for All Shook Up, because he has gotten such great reviews.
I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.

You will LOVE Spamalot. And I say that with very very very very very great emphasis on love. You will want to walk out of the theater and instantly go and see it again. It's great.

I have heard great things about All Shook Up, all around actually, but I think the Tony committee is tired of juke box musicals. This year saw All Shook Up (Elvis-based) and the flop, Good Vibrations (Beach Boys based). Lennon opens in July and I hear there are one or two more in the works for next season, one being based off of the songs of the band, Chicago.
