What Were Your Favorite T.v. Shows Growing Up?

Fri May 13, 2005 5:52 am

I know there was an 80's cartoon thread on here, but I didn't see anything for the subject of what shows you like watching when you grew up. For me it was:

Black Sheep Squadron
Hogan's Heroes
Happy Days
MacGyver
Murder She Wrote
Mystery Science Theater 3000
and others....

The Brady Bunch ("that's Diamondhead, dumbhead!")

LOL! Oh yeah. That particular line, delivered by one Peter Brady to Bobby Brady, was a voiceover as a shot of their United Airlines DC-8 was on final approach to HNL from LAX. (Incidentally, the Brady's departed from their
3-part episode/Hawaiian vacation on a United Airlines B-747-100. I still recall the ending shot of the episode, showing the UAL74 roaring down the runway and taking off).

My fav shows while growing up:

"Get Smart" - I LOVED the cool Opel GT that Max drove. Man, I wanted
that car!

"Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea"

"Lost In Space" - "Danger Wil Robinson!"

"Gilligan's Island" - My fav episodes are "Miss Castaway" and the episode
where "legendary" Broadway producer Harold Hecubah
(played by Phil Silvers) flees from civilization in order to
come up with a sure-fire winner play. He lands on the
island, and subsequentley casts the castaways in a
VERY off-Broadway musical version of "Hamlet".

"The Brady Bunch" - Marcia vs Jan. The show sucked when they brought on
Robbie Rist to play "Cousin Oliver" (Season 5). And of
course, there was Miss. Ann B. Davis.....nothing more
need be said.

NOTE: Half my siblings prefered "The Partridge Family" - we had debates as to
which ABC Network sitcom family was the best. Remember Reuben
Kincaid, their manager, and his swinging Stewardess girlfriend, Bonnie
Klineshschmidt?

"Land Of The Giants" - I still have my LOTG metal lunchbox.

"The Thunderbirds"

"Green Acres" - "Boot Olivah! Vy do ve hav to shtay here in Hootashville vhen
ve coould be back in da shity? Ve coold take Arnold ze
Pig vis us."

"The Trouble With Tracy". Only Canadians of a certain age will know this
stinkeroo of a Canuck sitcom. SO bloody bad it
is a bonafide classic. The scripts and acting sucked
BIG TIME, but man oh man!

"Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom - Sunday afteroon - CBC 5:00 p.m.
"Wonderful World Of Disney" - Sunday Nights, CBC 6:00 p.m.

"Marcus Welby, M.D." - Don't ask, I can't explain it.

"Adam 12"

"Starsky & Hutch" - Another 70's relic that is SOOO Cheeseball slime.
Remember Huggy Bear? Loved their Ford Torino.

"The Uncle Bobby Show" - Weird, VERY weird kids TV show on CFTO TV.

"EMERGENCY!" - Yes yes, this 70's classic about paramedics and Rampart
General Hospital. The most exciting segments of the episodes
were the scenes of the paramedic truck, sirens blaring, roaring
through the streets of L.A enroute to an.....EMERGENCY! LOL.

Later on, as my I matured and turned into the klassy guy (*cough*) I am today, I watched:

"The Mary Tyler Moore Show" - I LOVED Rhoda Morgenstern, she rocked. And
who could forget the classic episode (one among
so many of this great series) which featured
"Ted Baxter's Broadcasting School".

"The Carol Burnett Show" - In Canada, this show was sponsored by KRAFT
foods, and the commercials would always be
for recipes involving Cheez Whiz. Blech.

"All In The Family" - My fav episode is when Edith is going through a very
difficult menopause - her mood swings and violent
outbursts make her more of a "Dingbat" than usual.
Hilarious episode. Excellent series, superlative scripts and
performances.

"M*A*S*H" - A classic.

"Dallas" - A show that, when viewed today, is SO Cheesy, but ya gotta love it.

"Dynasty" - ONLY because of Pamela Sue Martin (Fallon Carrington) who was
in the cast from season 1 -3. I had a major crush on her. After
she left the show, I dumped it.

"Three's Company"

"The Bob Newhart Show" - The original with Suzanne Pleshette, who had the
that deep, smoky sexy voice!

LOL, ironically, today I watch little or NO television at all, with the exception of Discovery Channel, History Channel and HBO. TV of the 60's and 70's was THE BEST.

As a kid it was always "Bewitched." There wasn't anything to stop me from being in front of that TV at 7:30 on Thursday nights. I was too young to appreciate some of the humor, especially the last season (which was the worst rated, but as an adult had some of the best jokes, i.e. Esmerelda's goof with the Leaning Tower of Pisa "one tower (sandwich), and make it lean..."). As an adult watching the reruns, I appreciate it so much more, but you could tell they were running out of fresh ideas. Looking forward to the Nicole Kidman movie this summer.

As I got into high school in college it was the two D's - Dallas and Dynasty. Battlestar Galactica was a treat, and I am really enjoying this new version.
Oh how I long for the day when the skies were truly Friendly!

I never quite "got" Seinfeld.

I gave up on sit-coms in the 90's. Watched more "Discovery Channel" "A&E", or "History Channel" stuff. People would tell me , "you gotta watch Mad About You, or Seinfeld, or Freinds!". So, I'd tune in for the first time and end up seeing what would be considered a "classic" episode. "The Soup Nazi" was the first Seinfeld I ever saw. I then watched it THE NEXT WEEK, and it was some show that I didn't find funny at all. Same thing happened with "Mad ABout You". It was a Thanksgiving episode where they destroyed about 19 turkeys trying to make Thanksgiving supper. The NEXT episode wasn't all that funny, so I'd just give up, and go back to watching "Law and Order" reruns...

In no particular order...

The Muppet Show
Sesame Street
Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood
The Electric Company
3-2-1 Contact
NOVA
The A-Team*
Charlie's Angels
CHiPs
The Dukes of Hazzard*
MacGyver (I'd throw a fit if I missed it)
The Cosby Show (family time)
ALF
227 (family time)
Gimme A Break*
America's Most Wanted*
In Living Color*
The Golden Girls (family time)
Knight Rider
Airwolf
Happy Days (lost interest early)
Bewitched (lost interest early)
Married... with Children (lost interest)*
The Simpsons (lost interest)*

*My parents didn't like me watching these shows, but they stop me, either. They didn't like the violence -- except in the case of In Living Color, Married... with Children, and The Simpsons, which they thought were rude and crude.

Oh, and I never had cable.

I'm older than most so my choices tend to be 60 & 70s. Let's see...

Emergency!
Lassie
Gentle Ben (Gotta love the airboat!)
60 Minutes (it came on after Lassie IIRC)
Wonderful World of Disney
Batman! (Same Bat time, Same Bat Channel)
Gunsmoke
Bonanza
MASH
Mary Tyler Moore (but only because my Mom dragged me shopping in Downtown Minneapolis the day they shot Marys famous "hat toss")

An astronaut sitcom -- Can't think of the name, but the theme song went something like "it's about time, it's about space, 'bout two men in the strangest place"

edit:"It's About Time" a 66-67 Sherwood Schwartz sitcom. Google found it with the keywords "it's about time, it's about space" -- amazing....

I did some digging on the show. Apparently a lot of people remember it because of the theme song. Interesting.

Even more interesting -- it was part of the CBS 66-67 sunday night lineup:

6pm: 60 Minutes
7pm: Lassie
730pm: It's About Time
8pm: Ed Sullivan

I gather the 60 minutes & lassie audience stuck around for Ed (& the really big shooo!) and got "It's about Time" in the bargain. At least that's the only way I can imagine my folks leaving "it's about time" on....  Smile

Sheesh! 60 Minutes and Mike Wallace have been on TV a looooonnnngggg time.

I know in the past several people have mentioned the 1970s line-up on Saturday night, with All in the Family, Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, and the Carol Burnett Show. Classics. Am I leaving the 8:30 slot out?

A few other classics:

Get Smart
M*A*S*H
Barney Miller
The Jeffersons

Completely forgot Flip Wilson. crazy

More that I forgot...

The Jeffersons
Facts of Life
Diff'rent Strokes
Silver Spoons
Mr. Belvedere
Benson
Punky Brewster
Life Goes On (*loved* the end credits music, still can't find it...)
Doogie Howser, M.D.
TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes
Unsolved Mysteries (thanks for the reminder, Greyhound!)

There was a time when I basically lived in the basement of my house, as a teenager. I spent all of my free time in front of the computer and the TV. But like I said, I didn't have cable, so you'll notice these were all the Big 3, PBS, and Fox.
Up, up and away!

I watched too many. Now I feel the only good channels are The Weather Channel and ESPNEWS (though I sneak in some Spike and SciFi because of Stargate, with a scattering of the NBA Playoffs).
