If true

I have a feeling it is. It would only explain his lack of response to all the talks of the delay of his show and well it explains the delay of the show itself. I guess this guy couldn't handle the new found fame and fortune...that 50 million dollar contract threw him over the edge apparently!...LMAO!!!!!!!!

"But why South Africa?"

...trying to down play what is happening and also keep from too many details getting out...

I wonder whether there is something else going on that is causing him to seek some refuge in South Africe.

If mental illness is the root of his problems, then I wonder why he went over there. Is South Africa known for its psychiatric hospitals?

Whatever the case I hope he ends up getting the help he needs.

TedTAce- lets not jump to conclusions. Nobody has said, or speculated that his condition is related to his chosen profession.

Hope he gets better quickly... I'm not a fan of his comedy, but I do know how hard he works.

Where would you rather be, Ian....in an institute here in the States where every paparazzi with a zoom lens could capture your plight or as far away as reasonably possible?

There is often a connection between creativity and mental health problems. This may be the case with Mr. Chappelle. Perhaps there is a family history of mental health problems. There are also stories of him partying, pressure from Comedy Central to tone down some of his most conterversial humor or just couldn't face the stress of obligations to his huge contract. It is a bit wierd of him going to South Africa, but as noted above, he would be able to keep his privacy there well away from the press here in the USA.
Mental illness is something very serious to deal with. Let's hope he can recover.

Good point.....although celebs go to institutes here all the time. That said, I'd probably go to one overseas as well.

He must realize that once he signs contracts in Hollywood he is the property of those that formulated it. Every celebrity under contract is an investment. When celebrities pull such antics as Chappelle just did, they become a liability. He just ruined his career. No one is going to sign him up with big money if he just gets up and leaves the country on a whim.

I'm not saying that he doesn't deserve to seek means of contentment and personal betterment, but I am saying that he should not expect to be welcomed with open arms in Hollywood upon his return, especially by producers and investors.

Do you have issues with psychiatry?
That's the second time in as many threads you put mental illnesses in a negative light.
Mental health is not something to be embarassed about (or proud for that matter.) It's no fun to be (or watch those around you that are) depressed, or have some other form of a mental/emotional disorder. For the most part, it's an unfortunate imbalance of brain chemicals, and it's why many people see psychiatrists, so get off the psychiatry = kookiness wagon already.
Alright, I'm off the soapbox now.

It seems that most comedians have some sort of mental health problem.

Chris Farley grew up on anti-depressants as he became a comedian and if any of you have seen the Seinfeld movie about comics it really seems like a down and out group of people.

Not a surprise that Chappelle is one of them.

LOL, those pictures above point out the best episodes from season 2, except for Wayne Bradys guest host that was the best one I thought.

Talented comics like Dave Chappelle tend to have personal demons they have to contend with, usually at the height of their fame. Look at the examples of John Belushi, Chris Farley, Martin Lawrence, Richard Pryor, Freddie Prinze, etc. At the very least Chappelle is seeking help and isolating himself while he sorts out his issues, rather than have a drug-induced meltdown or worse, a drug-related death.

That said I'm sure there is more to this story than what is being related by the media. Chappelle is probably my favorite comedian right now and I wish him the best. I'm sure he'll return to the limelight eventually, probably with some new material from the time he went "crazy".

Something tells me that this may be a publicity stunt. Isn't a little ironic that his 2nd season of his show is released on 22May? Just a thought.
