Good News For The EU: Pascal Lamy To Head The WTO!

Sat May 14, 2005 7:45 pm

Pascal Lamy, the combative Frenchman who lobbied for the EU in the global trade talks as European trade commisioner, has become the new director general of the World Trade Organisation.

In the past, Mr Lamy fought hard to defend EU subsidies against criticism. "How much of myself did I leave in the previous position and how much of myself would I bring to the new position is a sort of secret which I am not ready to disclose totally," he said.

I would not consider this good news for the EU - and Jwentig's post is more than proof for that: every EU-hater and -basher will now, erroneously, see the WTO as, more or less, a part of the EU administration.

Which - obviously - won't make it true, but diplomatic and political problems have begun with much less problematic appointments...

The WTO has not done itself a favor with Lamy's appointment - they should have gone with one of the other candidates, none of which were from either the EU or the US.
