Who's Going To Erau In Fall '05?

Sun May 15, 2005 3:13 pm

Just trying to see who from a.net is going to be at Embry-Riddle (Daytona) this fall! I'll be there, freshman. Don't know what I'm gonna study yet, but I'll be flying hopefully.

So, who else?

Well, I won't see you here. I am leaving in August after four long years and I will be so happy when I pack up and leave Florida for good. This school and town are not what they are cracked up to be. Good luck to you though.

BTW, be sure to budget for another $150 per semester in the form of a "Student facility fee" that the student government imposed on students that will take effect beginning this fall. The money will be used to fund the development of a building that you will never see. Just another reason to love ERAU,  Yeah sure  banghead

In hindsight, the one thing I should have done when checking out this school was ask students their opinions of the school. I don't know what they would have said then (as that was pre 9-11), but it probably would have made a difference in my school decision. I know too many other people here that feel the same way-we bought into the hype and were disappointed when we found that the school was different from what we were shown on the tour. I was giving him a short opinion.

For the part about the extra money: because this is a new fee, he probably didn't know about it and I want to make sure that he has all of the information before he attends. I was in the student government at the time of this vote to approve the $150 fee. The vote was 19 for and 2 against- and I was one of the two students who voted against the fee. I am still frustrated about this because the paying students are already paying too much to attend this over hyped school.

Considering how much a student will pay in a year at this or any other school, $150 seems really trivial. You've mentioned it twice as if it is a prime example of why you don't like the school anymore. The fact that it was overwhelmingly voted "for" must say something about its benefit.

I have to admit, if I were doing it again, I would reconsider ERAU. I'm just generally ambivalent about being an alumnus. I have lots of colleagues and a network, that is great, but overall, in terms of value for the money, I have my doubts admittedly.

Especially when i see how much it's running now. Eek!

I'll be there, starting my third year in the Business Program. I just finished with all my flying on campus two weeks ago (I have an Area of Concentration in Flight, not a major), so it will be nice to have time for more "studious" activities, and not have to wake up to fly at 6AM anymore.

Also, this coming year I will be an R.A. in Doolittle Hall, so if you get housed in Doolittle 3rd North, I will be your R.A. But there are any of a number of places where you may be assigned. I take it you will be living on campus?

If I could offer one piece of advice, since you are undecided on a major, is to do something other than Aeronautical Science. A minor in flight on campus is fine, but it is good to focus attention elsewhere just to have something to fall back on in the event things don't work out, but I am sure you have heard that before. However, as Eric Cartman says, "Follow Your Dreams." Do what you think is best for you.

If you have any questions before you arrive, don't hesitate to email me. Good Luck this fall.

Scholarships. All of my A+P classes (four semesters) were paid for by the company that I intended at. By the time I started those classes, I had already been here two years. I felt it was better to have a free ride at an OK place than to go through the hassle of moving and pay for classes at a better place. And after that, just one semester till graduation which I am doing right now.

I have no doubt that the new building will bring benefits to the school, my big beef was the popular attitude among our student leaders: "We want to build this building and we have no blueprints or any idea what we are doing, we will just tax the students because they don't care anyway." This just happens to be the latest event of many that have gradually changed my opinion of this school. Anyway, to keep it simple, taking money from students because you think they won't care is a form of robbery.

Plus, pilots here can now get their Private using a simulator for a good chunk of the course. That's something else that a lot of people don't like.

Many people, including me, feel that it is over priced, but you are paying for a name that carries some weight. That's probably another reason I stuck it out in the beginning.

Ilikeyyc,

Good point and I can concur. My safety minor was indispensable for me, and actually DID directly impact my first airline job.

And without a doubt, doing an internship/coop is pretty much mandatory. I did 2, and both were also extremely valuable. Build your resume as much as you can even as an undergrad.

I congratulate you on getting into ERAU and I wish you the best of luck.

With that said, I do want to give a little advice. I STRONGLY encourage you to consider joining the ROTC. Having gone to a 4-year flight school myself, I can tell you that the school is never as *wonderful* as they say they are. You only get what you put into it. If you work hard and are committed to your goal... then you will succeed. And it's a good idea to have as many people/tools at your disposal to help you develop your skills. The ROTC helps you develop responsibility and discipline... and not to mention the financial benefits.

I honestly do not want to sound like a recruiter, trying to do exactly what ERAU does... sell you a product with exaggerated claims. I've been there and I know how tough it is. I wish I had joined the ROTC when I came in. I joined the Warrant Officer program later... and certainly do not regret it... but I am also paying back student loans.

So, just keep all options on the table. And again- congrats on getting in. Good luck next year and safe flying.

yeah, that's another reason. Look, just because I don't have a favorable image of the school doesn't mean that you will too. Some people really enjoy it here.

Granted that there are problems at every school, I believe that ERAU has more than its fair share- especially in the financial aid office. The administration seems to be out of touch with its students. For example the admin recently tried to get rid of the December graduation so that there would only be one graduation event per year! That upset a lot of people. ERAU has an extremely low alumni donation rate (even before 9-11) mostly because many grads walk away from here with a bad image of the school. Maybe Slider can share his experiences.
