Madrid/Las Palmas Meet, III

Tue May 17, 2005 8:47 pm

Hey,

Other post has now passed that 200 mark post wise. You can see the two previous here:
Tenerife/Madrid Meet (by EZYAirbus Apr 13 2005 in Non Aviation)
Las Palmas/Madrid Meet (by Capital146 Apr 26 2005 in Non Aviation)

The meet starts on Friday 7th Oct but kick off properly on Saturday 8th with everyone saying their goodbyes on Monday 10th Oct. Anyone is welcome to join us, new people are always warmly welcomed Smile, as well as you regulars silly

The same basic plan:

8th Oct
People arrive in MAD
Perhaps try and have a meal and a few drinks somewhere nice in the evening.

9th Oct
Depart at 08:25 on IB802 (A340-300) from MAD down to hot and sunny LPA for the day, to catch some rays and aircraft.

Depart LPA at 19:45 on IB813 arriving back at MAD at 23:20.
Those with energy remaining will possibly head into Madrid to catch the nightlife.

10th Oct
Majority will nurse hangovers.
Spend day at MAD enjoying all the comings and goings before people begin to catch their flights home.

The LPA trip is optional, and some are staying in MAD on the Sunday, free to do whatever they wish but can you really resist a ride on the A340 (possibly -600) to top off the weekend biggrin .

The hotel is (still) undecided, though it looks as though an NH will be filled with Anetters again Wink

The flights we will be using are as follows. If the loads are good, it is thought possible that the flight out could be an A340-600:

OCT 09 IB802 DEP MAD 08:25 ARR LPA 10:10 340
OCT 09 IB813 DEP LPA 19:45 ARR MAD 23:20 343

There will be no drinking, and I expect everyone to be in bed by 9pm on pain of severe punishment - you'll have to sit with JGPH1A while he finishes his bottle and sing him lullabyes to get him to sleep!! Big grin

Drinking! Tsk, I thought this was a cultural weekend.

Once everyone has booked a hotel, please post it so that we can consult a map and see where exactly everyone is.

I've booked a car, so transport shouldn't be a problem and I know Alfonso is mobile so we're all go.

I hate to make the list even longer, but I think maybe it would be a good idea to add another sub-list to the big list, saying who people are sharing with, and at which hotel.

Hey Jimmi
Long time no see
It really depends on the time of year and where we choose to go. It's usually discussed first , then put to the vote.
There's a meeting at MAN in July ( 16 and 17th ) but I won't be there as I'll still be in Kefalonia.

I might just try to make it to MAD that weekend if I can find a cheap airfare across the pond in the next couple months. Probably fly into LHR or DUB first, is it cheap to get to MAD from either of those cities? Y'all take care now

Okay, I've received the official spousal ratification. We're coming from FLR and may have some time to play with--is it reasonable to fly into Barcelona and take a train (or something) to Madrid? I can get cheap flights from Piza - Barcelona, and it'll be my first time in Spain so I wouldn't mind seeing some of the country.

Thanks,
Leanne

Trains are good and not too expensive. Check out http://www.renfe.es/ and click on the English Flag for an english version (or alternatively, go directly to http://horarios.renfe.es/hir/ingles.html ).

I've taken the Altaria-type train a couple of times and its First Class is excellent! Typical journey time from Barcelona to Madrid is about 5 and a half hours, arriving at Madrid city center (Atocha train station) from where I'd advise you to take a taxi to your hotel.

Perhaps you also want to check how much a fligth from Barcelona to Madrid costs. I've just checked Iberia's website, and they seem to have fares which are ever lower than when going by train.

http://www.iberia.com/ Note: the "Change to English" button is in the top right hand corner, next to the "Iberia in..." dropdown menu (I really had a hard time finding it  Smile).

Perhaps you also want to check how much a fligth from Barcelona to Madrid costs. I've just checked Iberia's website, and they seem to have fares which are ever lower than when going by train.

Hey thanks for the tips... I'll check out those sites. Should also ask, is this a cool drive, and if so, should I give any thought to renting a car? We can leave as early as Wednesday afternoon from Italy, and don't need to be back until Monday morning.

Gracias!

I've only driven this route once (twice, if you count the return trip) and that was ages ago. Don't think this route is particularly interesting. Perhaps the only city on-route worth a visit would be Zaragoza.

My advice to you is you stay a bit longer in Madrid or Barcelona (or both) and catch a plane between these cities. This will give you more time to explore the city, visit museums (Prado, Reina Sofia), the nightlife (especially Madrid  Smile) before heading back to Italy.

Hmmm.
It seems to have gone a bit quiet on this meeting at the moment. Ok I know its a good way off yet but its nearly June already and its four months away. It'll be here before we know it everyone. Still , there's plenty of time for others to book and we still need more for that A340 flight to LPA from MADBig grin. Obviously everyone will be concentating on the summer hols coming upon us all. I'm off to EFL on July 3rd ( pity about the MD83 that Air Scandic are using. Was hoping for a 738 this time  Sad . )
Keep posting everyone and lets not let this thread go stale on us.

Cheers all

Don't you mean "exquisite gems of wit and pearls of wisdom, cast forth liberally upon the ears of the eagerly awaiting public ?" I'm sure that's what you meant - funny how you typed it though. Possibly you are using punch cards.

Erwin,

As far as I can tell I am the only one with a hotel booked so far. This is the "Pegaso" which is about 8km from the airport. I booked it at the same time as I booked by flights through Expedia.

I think the rest of the gang want to try and get in the Nh near the airport.
