That Stolen Audi A3

Wed May 18, 2005 2:12 am

I was just wondering, have you all seen the ads for the stolen A3? I have seen them on tv, audiusa.com, magazines, and currently on yahoo.com. I would imagine it would be fairly hard for the criminals to make any use of this car now due to the heavy advertisment? Anyway, hope Audi is able to find it soon.

Chris

May I ask why this A3 is so special?

It's the new 2006 model.

My guess is that it is not stolen but a marketing ploy. And the mere fact we are talking about it would imply it works beautifully. Similar to how the movie "Blair Witch Project" was hyped up.

Thanks for the link, Justin!

As Peter already wrote, that is looking also to me like a marketing ploy.

It is a marketing ploy. I saw the first commercial for it yesterday, and it's quite cool, actually.

A marketing ploy? That is quite creative considering it gets people thinking about the car and all. Sure is a beauty though.

I think it's bland, compared to the original A3... I really liked that car, it was fun to drive - not as much technology in there as in this new model, but the car just didn't look like almost every other car out there.

I was starting to get the "marketing ploy" idea bout 5 seconds after I called up that Audi webpage...

I'd hate to own one. I'd get really pissed at being "felony stopped" by the cops a couple times a day.

The new one is definitely a better drive, and I like the shape personally - but perhaps its a bit too similar to the orginal - except more muscular. It is VERY colour sensitve though. Some colours work very well on it, others don't. Engine and tyres options make a big difference on the drive of the new one. Have you driven the normal or the sport spec?

The Audi was stolen (supposedly) on April 1, 2005, but the domain stolena3.com was registered on March 17, 2005, about 2 weeks before the robbery.

I can assure you that this is a marketing plot. An very wise one.

Yes, it is obvious that this is a marketing trick from the second the TV ads appear, but I just wanted to back it up with hard facts.

Regards.

Edit: Ha! I was investigating the hard way. It was more simple to go to stolena3.com and click on http://www.stolena3.com/archives/001176.html

Congratulations! You've discovered a fun, interactive, fictional story sponsored by Audi. This campaign is similar to what's known as "Alternate Reality Gaming," in which a community of users become a part of the story, interact with its characters, and help each other unravel its mysteries along the way.

DUH!

I was a bit surprised when I came across this - I'd have expected Audi to be a bit more subtle about this kind of official hoax, and just leave people to work it out for themselves. (The Volvo S40 And The Mystery Of Dalarö, anyone?) Still, it the the US, so they must have needed a disclaimer  Wink

Does anyone else find it silly that both Audi and BMW are both heavily advertising their new "3" cars at the same time, the "A3" and the "3 Series", respectively?

I can barely tell the commercials apart.

This idea reminds me of the "Counterfeit Mini" ads that have been on TV for a while. Even though it's obviously a hoax that can be backed up with concrete evidence, it's a darn good idea by the folks at Audi. Looks like a nice car!

Just coincedence really. These two models aren't really competitors - the 3 series competes with the A4, the A3 with the 1 series.

The A3 has been out in europe for nearly two years now (the five door for almost a year). Audi has finally decided to launch it in North America. It has just come at a time when BMW is launching its new 3 series pretty much everywhere.
