What Country Will Handle Oil Price Explosion Best?

Wed May 18, 2005 4:27 am

I think Japan would be one of the best placed countries to face a huge rise in oil prices with its high proportions of rail commuters on electrified lines and alot of electric/hybrid vehicle technology. Or maybe a communist/former communist country that isnt as dependant on fossil fuels?

Out of the industrialized nations I'd say France -

- 70% of power already comes from nuclear energy
- Strong environmental movement already in place pushing for higher efficiency
- good mass transit infrastructure
Hypocrisy. It's the new black for liberals.

I'd say Iceland. They have almost unlimited free geothermal energy and are already starting to switch over to hydrogen.

Producing hydrogen in Iceland shouldn't be to much problem since the electricity, which comes from hydro power and geothermal power is almost free and the access to water (both fresh and salt) are also unlimited. The heating of the houses comes from geothermal energy so the "only" thing they use oil for is for transport.

I would say USA, as they have a lot in the own country, and many many more in Iraq.

Canada: There is more oil there than in any other place in the world.

Europe: France (I hate to admit) but there energy policy is good. (Do not ask what they do with the nuclair waste.)

NL: Huge oil storage near Rotterdam-Maasvlakte (I believe they have one year world supply there).

South Africa: One of the few places with Plutonium (Wasn't Mandella good friends with Ghadaffi?)

The worst:
Japan and Germany: They have very little storage and huge demands for their industries. The have hardly nuclair power and are slow to change away from fossil fuels.
