A 1961 model here. The 707 & DC-8 were just starting service on a broad scale when I came along. I was a mere 10 yr old lad when the first 747s started service with Pan Am. Geez...seems like ancient history to me now. Regards.

I seem to be older than almost everyone here except for Skidmarks - I was born in 1954, I'll be 51 later this year. Yes, I am an 'old git'  old  Old enough to be the daddy of some of you kiddies out there.
I was born before the 707 was born, when piston aircraft ruled the skies. My father worked for Curtiss-Wright here in New Jersey and he worked on new and the rebuilding of their famous huge, radial piston engines for many airlines, including sadly many that don't exist today. He was laid off from C-W in 1963, when I was 9 due to the fast movement to jets.
I recall seeing most of the a/c's at an airport (LGA, EWR - when only the North Terminal) were piston a/c's and in the heyday of the 727, 707, BAe ancestors. I have flown in the early to mid-80's on DC-8's, DC-9's, 707 and early 747. I even recall the introductions of 'jumbo jets', when the 747 first came out, as well as the DC-10 and L-1011.
I am old enough to recall: sexy/sexist ads featuring 'stewardess' not flight attendents; when all pilots were male (well, not much better today); when got true meals on flights and not just a package of peanuts; when you kinda dressed up for a flight; when the IFE was one picture on a grainy screen in the front of the cabin; when most transcons, and even many middle range flights on major routes, were on widebodies. I remember when the 767 came out (2 engines to cross the Atlantic....the horror).
So I am an old git too for sure  old

Hell, I am 22 and you could easily be MY father.   If you had a child when you were 14 (possible), your son or daughter would be 36 - what an awful thought! Hell, if I had one when I were 14, the person would be 8.  Wow!

Sorry Skidmark, just move over and let a 1947 vintage bask
The first time i went spotting was at LHR on 9 July 1960
Qantas and Air India constellations
A 707/dc8 was a rarity
BOAC were running strotcruisers and dc7c
KLM has electras
Aer Lingus flew F27
The Caravelle was new
BEA still had ambassoadors and DC3
Most european lines run Convair 34/440
TU104 were regular visitors
I still have my Ian Allan abc for 1960 and my notes from 1962-73
You yuong uns, really missed the good times

1959 here . . . I remember seeing the first Western B720 arrive in JNU way back when. And have flown on a Boeing Stratcruiser with NW into ANC . . . I remember boarding an AS 727-100 thru the rear airstairs . . . and remember when the DHC-6 Twin Otter was state of the art for STOL and commuter traffic into Alaskan villages and towns . . . and I remember seeing the first bunch of 737s coming on line with AS and Wien Alaska Airlines.

I also remember the very first 747 I saw . . . it was 1970, it was SEA, it was a NW bird arriving from who knows where, and all I could think of was "that is a big plane" . . . it was to be 1981 before I would actualy fly on one, and it would be FRA-ORD on LH.

The first flight of my life was on a PanAm B727 out of THF to FRA, boarding through the rear stairs (this is the first one I clearly remember, there might have been an earlier one on a PanAm DC-6). I also remember being allowed to stay up to see some Apollo moon landings on our old black and white TV, and the first TV news I remember was the Vietnam war and the Yom Kippur war. I also remember the first Sesame Street shows on German TV, as a trial the original American version in English language.

If you remember Doughboy City in Berlin, did you ever visit the artificial hill the Lilienthal brothers built less than a mile away in the 1880s for their glider experiments?

Gold to Faenum (did you take your pill ?)
Silver to Silverfox (logic)
Bronze for Iakobos (well deserved)

the pack did a useless sprint for 4th place, lightyears behind.
Good try from the 61'ers though.

I cannot speak for the other laureates, but I did not meet Otto Lilienthal nor the Wright brothers.

My first flight was on a brand new DC-6B (OO-CTB) and I have enjoyed rides on (original, non-restored) classics like Avro Anson, De Havilland Dove and Heron, Piper Cub (my first looping in 1954), DC-3, S-55.

Time for a single malt (or two or...) and a good pipe...helps remembering the good old times, the best ones of course.

WOW - nice to see someone on here who is OLDER than me!!!! However, I'm old enough to be able to say that my first flight was on a DC-3 of Lake Central Airlines, from Wheeling WV to Washington National, with a stop at Morgantown WV en route. Lake Central, through a number of mergers over the years, is now part of USAirways.

First flight was on an ANsett ANA B727 from Mel to Syd in 1969 - I was 5 yo, and already bitten by the aviation bug !
By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?
