The World's Tallest Building....

Sun May 29, 2005 8:20 pm

I suppose the one in Taipei is currently the world's tallest building. Right?

Which city will have the next tallest building on earth? Dubai, Seoul, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo, New York, Chicago etc they all have plans to build the world's tallest building..... But who is going to be number 1?????

My guess is Dubai. The tower that they are building there is going to be the tallest man-made structure in the world if it goes as planned, surpassing the TV tower in North Dakota that has held that record for some time. And Dubai has a history of spending lots of money on extravagant projects, so I think it will go as planned.

The other cities in the world are more held back by reality.

Well they should spend it on other things coz many parts of Dubai/UAE are still very poor.

In my opinion it is pointless to build the tallest building just for the title. Besides, sooner or later a new building will beat it

Taller than the oil thing????? Coz there is one which is very tall.

Seoul has plans to build the world's tallest building. Also Tokyo and Shanghai (200+ floors if I remember correctly). They call it a city-building. Something like that....

Hong Kong has plans to build the world's tallest building too. The richest lady in Hong Kong (Some reports said that she is the richest lady on earth) is still having a lawsuit on this matter.

All is answered here (with diagram). Only the ones already constructed, or currently under construction are included. "Proposed" ones are not included because there are chances that they never materialise anyway...

See : http://www.skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?11010477

Record holders for world's tallest buildings :-

1974 Sears Towers, Chicago
1998 Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur
2004 Taipei 101
2008 Burj Dubai (*)

(*) not related to Burj al Arab

Between 2006 & 2010 there will be 4 new buildings taller than Petronas Twin Towers, but shorter than Taipei 101 :-

2006 Abraj Al Bait Towers, Mecca
2007 Union Square Phase 7, Hong Kong
2007 Shanghai World Financial Centre
2010 Busan Lotte Tower, S Korea

By 2010, Top 25 tallest buildings in the world by geograhical region :-

15 in the Far East
5 in the Middle East
4 in the USA
1 in Europe

News to me... Dubai has very little poverty, as with Abu Dhabi, I am not sure about the rest of the Emirates but I am sure about these two.

Anyway, the tallest building is going to be Burj Dubai, its height has not been announced so nobody attempts to beat it, but damn that thing is huge...

Not counting tv towers and projects still in the "proposed" phase, the Burj Dubai in UAE will be the tallest when completed in 2008. It will be 2313 ft (705 m) and 160 stories tall.

Taipei 101, the current tallest, is around 1671 ft (509 m) tall.

QR332, don't be surprised, United Airline has very rudimentary knowledge of Middle East.
2 of the world's best airlines (QR, EK) with a very high growth are avoided from Western world. Very strange when I see how popular they are in the Western countries.
Especially when his nick translated in Arabic is the name of a new Arabic airline.

Eventually someone will beat it. History repeats itself.

From what I heard Tokyo is planning on something too. Not sure what it is.

Both cities are not ranked very high in terms of per capita income.

Do you want to know something about statistics - they're not always right!

Why did you start this thread - I mean you're original question asked which city will have the next tallest building. Someone gave you an answer and you shot it down in flames. What do you want us to say?

Dubai is planning the next tallest building, sure it will probably be surpassed in time but name something that isn't surpassed technologically.

NumberTwelve, I'm with you mate! Good comment.

Anyway better get back to the original topic.

hmmm, it will be the world's largest apartment building for now and is called the Eureka Tower. Nothing in the league of world's tallest building however!

On that note - just what Melbourne needs... more apartments!

Yes I believe so. If that big ass tower I can see from my bedroom is it! (You see its hard to tell in Melbourne because of the myriad of other apartment buildings being build!)

Cool.

But there are so many surveys as well as statistics reports. A few of them suggested that USA is number 1, Japan is no 2, Hong Kong is no 3 and Singapore is no 4. I mean in terms of average income....

So its hard to say. Guess statistics and surveys are not always reliable especially when there are lots of different surveys and reports

Just my 2 cents

I beieve there is some debate over the tallest building. Will it be the Freedom Tower or the Burj Dubai. In my opinion, the latter is more of a "my _____ is bigger than yours" quest by Dubai. But I guess as long as the government has the money to prop these things up, more power to them.

I do think the designs of the newest buildings are breath-taking.

If you say so. Dubai must be doing a good job of pricing all of the poor over to Sharjah, where so many apartment buildings are filled with 20 bachelors to a single 1 bed, 1 bath apartment.

I saw one guy in a neighboring building talking to a tape recorder, mailing it back home because he couldn't afford to call.

I didn't say there was no poverty, I said there was very little poverty. Most of the people who are beneath the poverty line are Indian labour workers who have the same conditions back at home, and come to the Gulf to try to make a living. It is very sad, I have also seen very sad things such as the ones you mentioned above, but hell, every single city in the world has poverty, and what United Airline said (Well they should spend it on other things coz many parts of Dubai/UAE are still very poor.) is definatley not true.

My ___ is bigger than yours is a typical US american attitude, sorry.
And there are of course also poor people in the Emirates - but I also saw poor people, living in the streets, no house, no government support in Seattle and Los Angeles. And the US government prefers to invest into wars not into charity.
Not to mention about Hong Kong - and when I compare HKG with DXB or DOH, HKG is definitely the worst in wealthy.

According to MANY surveys, USA has the world's highest per capita GNP followed by Japan and Hong Kong. New York is the world's largest business/financial centre and Hong Kong is number 3. Definitely richer than DXB and DOH on average. A few surveys suggested HK has the highest number of super rich on a per capita basis, as well the highest number of mercedes/BMW/Rolls Royce/Ferrari/Jaguar etc on average.

Properties can kill in Hong Kong. That's the problem. They are so expensive.

However it is true that there are quite a number of poor people in Hong Kong. We do not have a strong welfare system. It is good in some ways but bad in the others. The gap between the rich and the poor is big in Hong Kong. The rich are super rich (especially businessmen, management, government officials etc which are considered as the most well paid on earth). The poor can be VERY poor. Most people in Hong Kong have high quality of living though.

Cheers
