Medical (Heart) Question - Am I In Danger?

Mon May 30, 2005 11:33 pm

Hi all!

I have a question that has been on my mind quite a while. I was going to ask my doctor about it, but first I will post it into the most trusted forum on the internet, right next door to the How Big Is Your Phonebook and Official Miss Universe thread!  Smile

Well, my problem is like this. At certain times I feel that my heart is slightly out of rhythm, which means that after beating regularly for a while, there would be something like a half thump in between, and then it continues normally again. The strange thing is that this ONLY happens when I lie down to sleep, and only for a couple of minutes afterwards. It definitely has to do with going from vertical (standing / sitting) position into horizontal position. After I'm in bed for about 5 or 10 minutes, all is normal again.

Let me add that I'm 23 years, non-smoker and non-drinker, with no records of heart disease in the family, I do regular exercise (half hour of jogging every afternoon), eat more or less healthily (ok there might be some McD's every other week) but generally I think I eat ok, with little fat. I usually drink fruit juice, water or diet Pepsi (a lot), I'm not stressed most of the times, and I avoid flying on russian-built planes.

Can anybody give me some advice? Is this dangerous? Has anybody experienced any similar condition?

Thanks a lot!

Get to a doctor ASAP. It could be many things and most of them are nothing to worry about. But at least you would have peace of mind knowing.

Don't mess around with your health. Okay?!

Okay, Okay, I realize I should go to a doctor ASAP! I just thought anybody here has had a similar condition and could comment on this. I think I'll do some more online research and then take advantage of the wonderful generous German health care system!

Uh oh! I almost forgot! Will the doctor need to see my insurance card though, even if I am on etix? Isn't the printout sufficient?  Smile

It's nothing. I have it sometimes aswell, as have many of my friends and relatives. It happens when you're tired, especially if you're tired and drank alcoholic beverages, like when you come home from the pub...
Nothing to worry about.

LOL,

No it's not serious.
It's called "extra systole" (in French). It's a common problem of the heart beat rythm. It happens more often after lunch or when you are stressed/excited or after a coffee.

However, you should see a physician to check if there's nothing else, but that's unlikely at your age.

You are most likely having what are called PVC's (premature ventricular contractions). They are common. If they are any more frequent than one in 4 beats for prolonged periods of time - an hour or more - you ought to have it checked out. Also, if you feel weak, have chest pains, or trouble breathing while this is going on, I'd check it out regardless.

You might be having them at other times. It may only be when you are lying down and still that you even notice it. Interestingly, it isn't the PVC that you feel, but the following contraction which normal. There is a 'compensatory pause' after a PVC where the next normal contraction comes on time. The heart has a longer time to fill with blood, which gives it an extra kick when it contracts. That is the beat you feel.

The most likely reason you are having PVC's is from caffiene. Lack of sleep is also a common contributor. There are other potential factors, but they are not likely in your case.

Thank you all for your advice, especially Bezoar (I put you on my list) for the comprehensive medical explanation! I feel much better now! Before, I always thought I might not even live to ever redeem all my AAdvantage miles.

Still, I might better see a doctor some time soon. At least now I know that I will still be around tomorrow.

The most common arrhythmia that most sufferers are unaware they even have is Atrial Fibrillation (Afib) which can go undetected for years. The problem with undetected Afib is that it can lead to stroke and death if left untreated.

I wouldn't agree with the armchair cardiologists here that it is "nothing to worry about", get to a doctor for an ECG or stress test and be sure.

I would heartily disagree with this comment.

Atrial fibrillation is not uncommon in folks who are 50 yrs and older. It produces such a rapid and irregular heart rate that anyone who has it definitely knows something isn't right. It would be relatively rare for someone in their 20's to have it, and probably only then if they had some underlying congenital heart problem.

Without a doubt the most common reason why an otherwise healthy young male would have a sporadic or episodic 'palpitations' is from a PVC, which itself is benign.

It's rather difficult to diagnose in a message board. However, we are talking about odds.

You may be doing an extra systole...which is prwetty normal...however my advice does not replace that of a cardiologist

Cheers

well, I think you should DEFINETLY see your doc ASAP. I understand why you are posting though. I myself am having a similar problem except my heart beats speed up suddenly like while I'm just laying down or sitting...not doing any extreme exercise. Also, at times I feel very strong palpitations and almost feel like my heart is gonna jump out through my mouth. I will be seeing my doc soon because I have a history of heart disease in my family so I am not taking any chances. In your situation, as like mine, the best and obvious thing to do is see the doctor just to make sure. Good luck and hope everything is alright!  yes   yes

Ya, I've felt something very similar, all of the sudden your heart makes a weird beat and then it's normal. I first started noticeing it at about 10-11 years old and it happens on occasion, maybe 4-5 times a month. When I was in the hospital one of the doctors noticed a heart murmur that I had, and when I was taken to the cardiologist later I mentioned this to him, and he said I was fine on both accounts.

Bezoar - I agree with you that PVC's are high on the list...I would also add sinus arrythmia and thyroid disease to the differential diagnosis. In anycase, he needs an ECG from his physician to help sort these out. Birdwatching...perhaps you can post a copy of your ECG or send it to us? It'd probably be an a.net first.

If you're drinkin' a lot of Pepsi, I'd bet that's your culprit. I had similar symptoms and I was a big coffee drinker. When I cut back on my coffee, the symptoms pretty much disappeared.

I`ve heard of several people with these problems. Go to a cardiologist and let him/her check your heart.

Bezoar,

I have had runs of PVCs especially during severe anxiety. They are scary, but effective in making me stop doing whatever I'm doing... and take a moment to relax!

Go to see your doctor.

He will better know if you need a cardiologist or not.

I know that if I think I am having heart troubles, I will be consulting with A.net professionals before I go talk to doctors who specifically studied in the area of my problem for years and years.....
