I'm buying my generator at lunch. Suffered through almost 10 days of no power last year and I'm not going through that again.

Lowes has $70 rebate on the generator I'm looking at and Florida's tax holiday on hurricane supplies started today (will save me about $50).

I've already go all the flashlights and radios, duct tape and tarps that I'll need. I keep 3 propane tanks on hand for my BBQ grill and mosquito magnet, so I never really have to worry about that.

I own a pool and have a hand pump/water purifier, so clean drinking water is never an issue.

I'll probably pick up a couple of packs of batteries while I'm at the store.

Here we go again.

We bolted from Tampa, as we all thought Charley was coming our way, and went to Orlando, and got blasted, there. Had very minor damage to home, after the other three that hit the TPA area. Our insurance company has decided to drop a lot of folks, and we are scrambling to get on with someone else.

All our power outages all happened AFTER the storms had passed from falling trees. Luckily, it was pretty overcast, and not oppressively hot.

And, I am investing in a generator, at Sams....

I have Met many people with that way of thinking, "it will never happen again" or It will never happen to me" Well I see where that attitude got them!! Good luck to you if you do not prepare or have a plan for the Unexpected!!

I doubt it, considering they have now realized that hurricanes come in larger season of intensity. For about 20 years there's almost no hurricanes, than there's tons of them for another 20. It's a pattern and 2004 started it. Considering FL has the highest probability of getting hit by a storm every season, and Miami is the most probably city to get hit by a hurricane in the World   . We'll probably see at least ONE hurricane hit FL this year.

If not... it could just fluke, and everyone else except FL gets hit!

If you really want to do it, you will find a way; if you don't, you'll make excuses.

From watching the local weather forecasts from last night, IIRC there's a 77% chance of a major hurricane striking the US mainland, a 59% of a major hurricane striking the east coast anywhere from the Florida peninsula to Maine, and a 44% chance of a major hurricane striking the gulf coast anywhere from south Texas to the Florida panhandle.

It behooves everyone who lives anywhere along the eastern seaboard, down around the peninsula of Florida, and back to Texas to be prepared in case a hurricane threatens. Here in southeast Louisiana, we are constantly reminded to have our own hurricane plans ready to implement, be it evacuating (with a specific destination, and 3 or 4 routes to get there in mind), sheltering in place with appropriate supplies, etc, etc.

It doesn't do anyone any good to put their head in the sand and say "it's not coming here". Better safe than sorry.

The strike probability of a storm this year have nothing to do with the strike record last year. It's the same way that a second flip of a coin has nothing to do with the outcome of the previous flip.

It the probability of a head coming up is 50%, the probability of two heads in a row is 25% (.50 x .50). But the probability of a head coming up after a head has already come up is still 50%.

I saw an interesting statistic. When the Vegas casinos put up the electronic boards that show the 10 or 20 previous outcome on roulette, the house's take increased by over 30%. People would look at the board and try to discern a pattern or convince themselves that certain numbers were due to come up. Well, each spin of the wheel is independent from the previous spin, so the house was actually encouraging people to ignore the laws of statistics and bet more heavily on certain numbers, thereby further reducing their odds of being successful in the long-run.

I went through 3 of the Florida Hurricanes last year. Charley missed my house by about 15 miles however Frances and Jeanne came right over us. I think that we will get at least 1 this year in Central Florida.

I was in Orlando last year when Charley hit. All I will say is if I lived in Orlando I would be preparing for the worst after the devistation Charley had !

Lowes was sold out of generators by 12:10PM. Rushed over to Home Depot got one of the last three.

I was really surprised to see this much activity.
