Post A Picture Of Your Truck

Sat Jun 04, 2005 8:21 am

Trucks only, guys. And ANCFlyer, you've posted your picture of your truck about 30 times. We all know what it looks like.

1988 Ford F-150, 5.0 V8 (slow, though), 129,000 miles, 2WD, still decent AC (after 2 cans of freon were added last month).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/Fleetwing1627/smalltruckbroadside.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/Fleetwing1627/smalltruckcapopen.jpg
Here, all the windows on the cap are open. Mom says that the cap manufacturer thought she was nuts when she told them what she wanted, but she got exactly what she ordered. Big opening panels on the side for easy access, small rear panels with screens for ventilation if you sleep in the back of the truck, locks on all the windows, and a frame on top for the canoe.

Btw, the windows on the right are of the duplex where I live.

Note that the seat hasn't held up that well, with Dad being the daily driver, and it's wearing pretty badly. Note my Camry's front floormats, genuine Toyota items. They fit nicely over the rubber mats. It's interesting to think about how this truck was actually luxurious in 1988: it's hard to imagine a time when trucks didn't have power windows or locks, or a tach (this truck only has 2 speakers). And ABS only for the rear wheels.

Our ultimate trip in the truck was in 1991. I was 7, and my sister was 9. We drove from Huntsville, Alabama up to Oshkosh, Wisconsin for the 1991 EAA Oshkosh, which was my first. My sister and I slept in the back of the truck on cots, since at the time my parents only had a two-person A-frame tent (it ain't Oshkosh if you don't camp out). Then, after that week, we headed over to Hartford, Connecticut, to visit Dad's side of the family. After several days there, we drove home. It was a LONG way, especially since the rear of the Supercab really didn't have enough legroom, even for kids. But it held more stuff than our other car at the time, the 85 Toyota Cressida wagon.

Now this is a REAL Truck...the new Volvo. Big classic look, but with the Volvo aerodynamics! My friend thats a rig driver is getting one of these. Im so jealous!

http://www.volvo.com/NR/rdonlyres/CFBD452C-EE1A-413F-8ED9-A685F1806765/0/vt880_US_800x600.jpg

These may not be trucks...but they certainly drive "trucky". And I drive them more than my own car. LOL

A 45ft long Mercedes S class. Handles just like one too.

And my fave.

I think my diesel is bigger than ANCs BAFDT! Powerstrokes are fun though...you can really "blast" people in convertibles! Nothing like a dose of diesel smoke to let someone know they did something silly!  flamed

Who else drives BAFDTs? They seem to be quite popular.

I don't have a 'need' for truck considering I am one those damn big city liberals but IF I did have a need I'd certainly get a 1992-1997 Ford F-350 crew cab with the 7.3 liter V8 diesel motor, 4Wheel-drive, duallies and campershell.

If or when I ever move to northern Minnesota or eastern Canada, that would be my truck.

For small/midsize, my favorite truck would be the 1992-1996 Dodge Dakota extra cab $WD with the 318cu" V8 engine.
Nice little powerful truck.

Here's mine... I've had it from new (May 1997) and have around 92k miles on it now. It was my daily driver up until Jan of this year when I bought the Mazda6. Now it's been relegated to a work truck and a camping/4wheeling truck. I also have a '72 GMC Fleetside but I don't have any pictures of it available online right now.

Gah, you never get it right, ANCFlyer. We would like to see your travel trailer, too. If I had a digital picture of it, I'd post one of the truck towing our former 16 ft Sunbird speedboat.

Superfly, those Dakotas looked like crap (although they were a minor improvement on their predecessors). At least the generation after that was well-proportioned. Now they're back to looking ugly again.

What is the obsession with trucks in the States?

On Judge Judy, there is always some redneck broad filing a claim for some dent that some skank from Deepest Darkest Texas has put in her truck.

Anyways, Happy Polluting, guys....

No pic yet (delivery next week - hopefully), but to address BAxman's "What is the obsession with trucks in the States?", I'll only offer that sometimes they are helpful. Wifey's 300C scrapes a teeny bit going up our (basically box-bladed creek bed driveway) and my old Detroiter "city truck" S-10 is worthless for needed grunt, so I passed my depo on new Corvette (which I can't drive up there yet anyway) for a new 4WD Chevy reg cab long bed HD work truck.

These comments address that there are reasons for trucks.

For some of you, who in seeming perpetuity in this forum, scream about soccer moms and usefullness-less of trucks and SUVs because of "keeping up with the Jones's" and "mee-too-isms", I find hypocracy (how many negative threads are ther devoted to Ferraris, Maseratis, etc.?).

Sorry I'm on a rant, but it's almost tearfully boring. There are often very good reasons for wanting/needing/having a truck (in the STATES where we actually have enough land to drive around on!). Think about it, but don't be so knee-jerk as to judge everybody else within your (perhaps) picayunne envelope. Regards..Jack

I happen to like the boxy look of the 1992-1996 generation Dodge Dakotas.
Although I am a Ford loyalist, the Ranger doesn't offer a V8 and I just don't like the rounded look on trucks.
However, when it comes to full-sized trucks, nothing beats a Ford.

Just bought a 2004 Discover SE7. Wife will drive it while I drive the little car, but it's mine on weekends and whenever I don't care about mileage. Will be perfect for camping, towing and vacations.

Always wanted one.

My first truck (an ad that has one in it. Mine was blue, with a long bed and manual transmission.)

I agree that the Nissan Titan looks a little strange, with the rounded cab, but I never minded the previous F-150, even though it was awfully rounded off.

According to my RA from my freshman year, his family had a Ranger with a V8 that he said was a sweet little truck. Frankly, I thought that was strange, but if you can fit the 5.0 in an Explorer, it ought to fit the Ranger too. I don't see what the point of having a V8 in a Ranger is, however. Those trucks have such a short and narrow wheelbase that I wouldn't want to tow anything that required a V8 with one.

How about a nice, V8-powered 7/8ths size truck? Buy a used one and save some dough.

L-188; thanks (BTW, did you used to drive Electras, for maybe Zipper?);

'Fly; I actually like the packaging on the new Ford reg cab long box work truck over the GM equivilants, but can't stand the sound and stink of "their" diesel. I have a li'l Ford 2810 tractor - that diesel stinks bad enough, but I'll admit the power and grunt meet my current needs; of course, I'm not in traffic but out in the field. (Perhaps I'll reconsider my cousin's Masey-Ferguson 45, but I think he's trying to screw me).

BTW, my college roomate retired as chief designer on the latest series FoMoCo light trucks...I like them a lot, but as retired GM, it's hard to pass something up that's very close to "free". I understand GM wil have a new-gen C/CK in fifteen-or-so months. Maybe then "we'll" play catch up to FoMoCo. BTW, I like the Chrysler offerings, too, (as well as the Titan) however have a subconscious need to spread out "USA" nameplates. Nissan's plant is a few miles away, BUT, you won't see one on my property, though.

BaylorAirBear is right! SUVs don't count as trucks! We touched on but didn't see a lot of comment in a previous thread about where (and how and why) the term "SUV" appeared mainstream. Some ad-jockey who's brother owns a printing company or decal factory ?  Smile Like I said before, sport utility to me equates to the older Ford Broncos, GMs, Jeeps and the like.
SUVs are fine for those that want them, but they AIN'T TRUKS.

I think State Farm and the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division would beg to differ. They consider SUVs as trucks, and tax and insure them accordingly.

If I do replace me truck, what I want to do is find a 73-79 F-350 super or crew cab and restore it, maybe refit a 7.3 in the nose.

ShyFlyer; State Farm and NMMV can differ all they want to. Doesn't mean dick until they screw you out of another page from your checkbook. BTW, when have you ever agreed with an insurance company or a government agency  Smile

L-188; Dicky Reeve...cool.

BTW, I was before actively searching for a late-70s/early-80s Ford truck to keep on the farm (not even license or insure it) but have hiccups over their "twin I-beam" front suspension which I understand can be a real pain. Perhaps others can testify from experiences; my understanding is only hearsay. All best...Jack

N312RC, FlyingBronco05, Shyflyer, and Yegmaster, those aren't trucks. Especially not the Escape/Tribute twins; those are more akin to the Civic-derived CR-V than they are to a F-150.

No matter what government congresscritters have voted is or isn't a truck, after hefty wining-and-dinging and campaign contributions from the Three to classify those cars as trucks to help their fleet fuel economy averages (CAFE has no right to even exist, but I digress). Nice-driving and macho-looking tall stations wagons they are, but they're definately part of the Ford Family of Fine (hybrid, maybe) Cars.

No offense, they're find vehicles, but my old Cressida wagon had more similiarity to a F-150 than those do. Base engine in both was an inline Six, and both were RWD.

TW, I was before actively searching for a late-70s/early-80s Ford truck to keep on the farm (not even license or insure it) but have hiccups over their "twin I-beam" front suspension which I understand can be a real pain. Perhaps others can testify from experiences; my understanding is only hearsay. All best...Jack

Well I would be willing to cut you a deal on the 81 F-150 2WD that I haven't gotten rid of. Straight six and C-6 tranny.

Needs to have the brake lines to the rear changed.

Despite only being 2wd I have had that accross a creek.

That looks like a 94' Wilderness. Used to have a 94' Wilderness 27G but sold it. Sometimes I miss it and the diesel powerstroke rig.

'96 Wilderness, with lots of mileage . . . but it sat in storage in ANC while I spent 5 years in DC . . . it's great. It's a 28' Bunkhouse model, has bunkbeds in the back - bought it with my daughter in mind . . .

Quoting KDTWFlyer (Reply 43):
PS, how do you like the diesel torque??

I will never own a gasoline engine again, ever. The torque, horsepower, mileage, and stamina (combined) of a diesel simply can't be beat. It's like towing "nothing".

I learned how to drive a stick in my friends a 1986 Ford Ranger back in 1989. It was the base 2.3 4cylinder.

These would be the trucks I'd consider if I needed one.

Full size:
1992-1997 Ford F350 Crew Cab
7.3 Liter Diesel
4Wheel drive

Small/midsize:
1992-1996 Dodge Dakota Extra Cab

4wheel drive
Bring back the Concorde

Just got my first truck! Actually its my first vehicle! It's a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT Super Cab 4 door 4x2. The nice thing about it is it gets reasonably good gas mileage.

My uncle has a 2003 Ford Ranger with the base 2.3 Four and a stick. It's an okay truck (it was only $12K new, pretty cheap), but it rides terribly (like Dad's 94 Explorer).
