What To Do In Amsterdam?

Tue Jun 07, 2005 5:59 am

Hi there!

I'll have about two days to "kill" in AMS in the middle of August, would be great if some of you could give me a few hints! I'm arriving on AB8022 on the 18th and leaving early on the 20th, to go sailing on the Ijsselmeer. Of course, some time is reserved for AMS itself  Wink , but alas I'm a rookie spotter with little photographic expertise and no equipment.

Side note: I don't smoke anything, don't drink to get wasted and Red Lights are what annoys me at intersections.

Thanks in advance!

Ooh! That is so much fun. We drove early one morning from Dusseldorf to Enkuizen, sailed on the Ijsselmeer all day and returned to Dusseldorf the same night.  crazy  It was exgausting, but a great time.

You are missing the Gay Pride festival by an inch or two...but the Grachten festival and Sail 2005 are right on spot.

Seriously, I admit that I have never been to Amsterdam just to visit the city but only for excessive smoking, drinking and, well, you know.

For the "normal" visitor I would recommend this site. I am sure you will get lots of additional information because we have a lot of Dutch members here on A.net.

Getting their in time and spending 30 Euros in Amsterdam (instead of Berlin), rather than on the ticket for the next day!

Great!

Just enjoy the city in all of its beauty. Have a strawl through the Jordaan, visit the Westerkerk, See the famous squares (Dam, Leidsche Plein, Rembrandtsplein) and visit some museums. Just avoid tourist spots if you don't want to feel like you are walking around in England.

Also, big thank you!  Smile Though it seems much of Amsterdam is going to be in festival mode on those two days anyway.

You should I think spend at least some time in Leidseplein, a safe square away from the redlight district, having a beer or two and watching everyone else drink too much/smoke too much/xxxxx too much - even if you don't do things to excess yourself.

I think it is fun to just hop on a tram and see where it takes you, even if you just go to the end and come back or just go in a circle. The trams are a great way to discover the city that isn't on the tourist maps. They operate without really checking your ticket too seriously, not that I'm saying cheat them, but don't worry if you may not know exactly which ticket to buy or where or how much to spend on tickets.

Anne Frank's house is very important, even if you're not into history, everyone should see it. It takes only a few minutes.

It's a great time, you'll have lots of fun.

I agree with Wietse, strolling around in Amsterdam already makes worth the whole trip. The city is so beautiful, it's sad that everyone relates it to sex and drugs. Amsterdam is so much more...

There are plenty of museums, and things to do in AMS. You have to go and see Anne Franks house (go early in the morning to avoid crowds) and take a canal trip. I would love to have a few days in AMS. I think if I stayed in Europe I would have moved there.

And don't even get me started about the nightlife. Next time I go to the UK, I am defo booking several days in AMS.

You will enjoy it, no matter what.

Lots of things to do in Amsterdam ! One of my favourit city in Europe !!

- Take a canal trip, the opportunity to take a first step in knowing the city in a short time.
- Visit Anne Frank's house.
- Among all the museums I'll recommend to visit the Van Gogh's museum, astonishing !
- Visit the Planetarium (near the Zoo if my memory serves me well).
- The flower market it takes only 'bout less than half an hour.
- Night life... as somebody mentioned above, go to Leidseplein, drink a couple of beers it's safer than the redlight district.
- Redlight district, well... I've been attacked a couple of times there with knifes and etc... so I have not really good memories but it was a long time ago. Went there with my girlfriend once and nothing happened so...
- Sex museum in Damrak (the avenue in front of the train station), it's fun.

...and well, have a good time !!!

Yeah, good call, avoid those activities. You don't want to be cought up with the thousands of loud drunk British hooligans who can't handle beer that actually contains alcohol.
Amsterdam has more to offer and it's quite small, so everything is basically in walking distance. If you want to use the tram, buy a 'strippenkaart' at the railway station or newsstands. Just walk around and go to the places Wietse mentioned.

Seriously, in my moment (singular) of sobriety in Amsterdam I went to the Van Gogh museum-well worth a visit. The rest was very hazy.

Aloges,

I lived in Amsterdam for a year and even though the first thing that comes to mind are of course coffeshops and magic mushrooms there are plenty more things to do.

The best part is of course the Vondelpark and its really beautiful in summer, its basically the backyard of Amsterdam and on a sunny day the whole city is out, take a walk around the ring road and climb up one of the weeping wilows that hang over the ponds.

Anywhere you walk in any directon is going to be really intersting, the old town has of course all the funky Dutch architecture, with buildings leaning at all kinds of wacky angles due to the fact they they were built on mud and the supports have now tilted. Further out in the newer sectons there are many examples of impressive modern Dutch achitecture. Theres an island just to the west of the centre in the harbour that is a really cool place to visit (forgot the name but its really easy to find on a map).

But one of the best things to do is to rent a bike and ride around the city or even better get right out of the city and ride north into the countryside to towns such as Monickendam, Marken, Edam and Volendam. It only takes 20 minutes to ride outside of the city and the countryside is really beautiful and a very stark contrast to the city. There are many beautiful traditional Dutch villages where some of the older inhabitants still wear their traditional dress and even wear clogs. There are many places to rent bikes in Amsterdam and they can give you maps to show you the way, and quite a few will also offer guided tours.

Just hanging out for a bit on a crowded crossrods or public sqaure is always a good place to watch the world goodbye and belive me alot of the world is Amsterdam, tourists from everywhere flock here in summer and many young people from all over Europe and the world come here to live for a bit as well.

So enjoy your stay!!!

When you're in Amsterdam during Sail, you need to visit it. It just simply stunning to see al those ships, from small to very large!

Have a look at the Sail website

There are two best experiences I´ve ever had in Amsterdam:

  • Spend New-Years eve in Amsterday - but that´s off-topic for now ...
  • I´ve been on a nightly 2h+ canal trip ("Grachtenrondvaart") which included dinner - but that was a business trip and, I assume, quite expensive ...

One establishment I visited a while ago is a restaurant with (constantly changing) live music acts (no real stage) in A´dams RedLight-district (nothing to worry about!) is the Paleis van de Weemoed. website: paleis-van-de-weemoed.nl (I intentionally left out the "www.").

Just in case you´d like to do some spotting at Schiphol, there´s a very good guide available on http://www.plane-spotter.com/Airports/index.htm

But you will not have any problems to fill your 2+ days in central Amsterdam !
-HT

P.S. Try some Asian cuisine in Amsterdam !
Carpe diem ! Life is too short to waste your time ! Keep in mind, that today is the first day of the rest of your life !

Aloges,

I worked at the infamous Flying Pig Hostel, not the one in the center called the Downtown but the one south of Leidseplein just off the Vondelpark called the Palace. Ive stayed and worked at many different hostels all over the world and this is still my favourite.

I dont know if you're planning to stay in a hostel during your time there but if you are I would definitely recomend the Palace, not as sparkingly clean and sanitized as the YHA across the park, but a really fun place nonetheless.

It is filled with quite a bit of stoners etc., maybe not you ideal crowd, but everyone is really laid back and friendly there and its a great place to meet people and some of them are very interesting to say the least.

It is usually very full especially in summer so to guarantee a bed you need to book in advance on their website www.flyingpig.nl, or show up very early in the morning at least by 8am as they have many beds reserved for walk-ins on a first come first serve basis.

Have fun !!!!
