Back-patting Time: What Cool Things Have You Done?

Tue Jun 07, 2005 12:33 pm

So it's that time of year again... people are graduating, getting married, cool stuff like that. What have you accomplished?

It doesn't have to be a major cultural milestone--maybe you finally got up the nerve to talk to that gute girl/guy you've had a crush on. Perhaps you made it to 25 push-ups in a row. Or you managed to stir-fry something without setting the stove on fire. Tell us about it.

BTW, I know there will be the inevitable signed-by posts, but I do pose this thread in the spirit of goodwill. After all, if you can't brag occasionally in non-av, what good is it?

Cheers,
Leanne

My most recent accomplishment would have to be completing my Internet spider. It gathers information from all over the web, much like Google does, and puts it into a database. As of the past two days I've gathered over 30,500 pages.  Smile

Even though I considered this past school year not to be so good, I think I had some accomplishments. One would be getting phone numbers and keeping in contact with some girls I like. Also, in March I made it to finals at Colorado DECA for my internation business plan for a Finnish low-cost carrier.

I got a job which I start tomorrow! I get to do something with the databases at my former university's bookstore. Also something about invoices and accounting. I am a little fuzzy on the details because I applied and interviewed for this something like four or five months ago.

This means I will be postponing going down to Anchorage to study ATC for a year because I figured that it would be a good idea to save up some money so that I'm not totally reliant on loans.

Cool. I once did a project in a management science class where I projected system-wide flight departure time and equipment selection decisions based on an evil mathematical model that I barely understood. It was a total drag at the time, but I did get a unit of credit out of it.

So...

Went from lowly Level 2technician to blade specialist / Acting Support Manager in six months with my current company (also thanks to resignations though).

Got my basketball game back up to a level where I can play competitively all afternoon and sometimes get double-doubles.

Finally getting to marry UTAette after six years of living together  Smile

Well, I don't do pressups, I haven't done anything special other than refrain from beating my son for not getting a job. I've managed to retain MY job for another year in a volatile and uneasy airline industry. So I guess that has to be my achievement.

And I've got 33 pictures in the database since I joined in December, with 102888 views so far.

Went through all my IB exams, now to find out how bad I failed  Wink

Well.... I got my drivers license....

Done both...  Smile

Other fun stuff I've accomplished off the top of my head:

Came 3rd in a shooting competition in the air Force. We were over 50 guys. I managed to shoot two tiny targets 100m away, and a slightly larger one 200m away in less that 17 sec. Only had 6 bullets, so fireing blindly wouldn't help.  Wink

Other military achievements:
* Received a "mark" (like a pin) for athletesism.
* Received a -------"-------- for rifle shooting. Only bronze, but still...
* received a medal for completing the service in the air Force. (Nothing much to brag about, hehe.)

On an "IQ test" (official one, not the internet ones) I managed a high score two years ago. On a scale of 1-9 (9 being the best, and 6,5 average) I scored 7,5.
Took a similar test last week and scored 8. Big grin Getting smarter, hehe.

Enough poor self obsession for now...

My latest achievment was passing my PPL in 42 flying hours, over 19 days.

Got my first article published in an aviation magazine (with my name on it - woo hoo!)

Had my first trip in a hot air balloon.

Flew in a Twin Otter.

Got let loose behind the scenes at a major UK airport - sooo much fun.

Pulled up next to Jody Kidd in a Lamborghini - woo hoo ! (she left me for dust when the lights changed!!)

So what cool things have I done lately? Well I completed my first year doing Aeronautical Engineering at University, still have years to go though!

If we're talking about planes then I've flown on a Dash7 recently and more recently, like yesterday, an Embraer 170 which I have to say if a beautiful aeroplane. Last year I flew poor old DA, the MYT DC-10 which was an interesting experience. Also did a short Island hop on OA last month but enough about planes.

Oh and I too went to Berlin this year, Check Point Charlie. Big woop! Pulled a Polish bird at the weekend too, muhaha. Now that was cool.  Wink

October I hiked the Inca Trail in Peru for the second time. And for the second time I ran the final 5 KM from our camp to the Sun Gate overlooking Machu Picchu. Made it to the Sun Gate with 2 other blokes to be the top three in the race.

My most exciting achievement was in December - went sky driving for the first time while in Durban, South Africa. Had a sweet 45 second free fall on this tandem jump!

-Flew to and from Cuba on an IL-62 and didn't get busted
-Talked a guy in to trading my LeBaron for his Town Car without spending a penny
-Got my ex-girlfriend to move out without a fuss several years ago
-Fooled several women in to thinking I was rich
-Crashed several lavished company parties during the dotcom boom, one of which was on a cruiseliner with full open bar, all you can eat shrimp, lobster, crab, prime rib etc.

-Before I got my degree in Broadcasting, I had a managers job at a radio station.

-Have gotten to be on national radio, a few times.

-Turned up on a live recording of a Buddy Rich concert, yelling "Turn Up The Bass!!!"

-Was interviewed by CBS News, last summer, as one of the many who, in trying to ESCAPE hurricane Charley, drove right into it.

-had a friend who's dad was at NASA, and got introduced to some Shuttle astronauts who were visiting for dinner, at their house. (I don't remember who they were.)

I played a gig with Gary Cherone (of Extreme and VH) in a jazz group (he's a huge Sinatra fan) called Houndstooth at an AIDS benefit here in BOS in 1996. We were billed to open the Hard Rock Cafe with Aerosmith when Gary got the call from Eddie Van Halen to join. Needless to say, he buggered off and I went back to digging up leaking underground stroage tanks.  Angry

Hell, temper or no, I can't see a man size target at 4Km without good optics.

Easy, just aim at whatever appears to be moving...  Wink

The rule we learned regarding the AG-3 rifle is "The projectile (bullet) has a range of 4000 meters, and can kill even at this range."

There were 7 or 8 other rules too I think regarding use of the rifle, but can't remember them all now.  Smile

Oh, I also got the "idiot mark" during rifle shooting once also. If you position the rifle too close to your face when shooting, it will smack you in the eye as you fire. So a nice black eye was awarded to me, and many many others on the first day of shooting. Big grin

Btw, to add to my list:

* Been picked up from the sea by a Sea King rescue helicopter during a military exercise.

* Sat onboard a Sea King during some rather aerobatic maneuvers. (I thought the guys were gonna tear the old thing apart, but she held together very nicely)

So happy I served in the force. Big grin

Made honors for all 4 quarters for 3 years straight, graduated yesterday, met Al Gore, and Springer, hijacked the LR911 forums a year or so back with a slew of a.netters, saw the AN-225, became the most technoligically advanced in my school, etc, etc.

Came 3rd in a shooting competition in the air Force. We were over 50 guys. I managed to shoot two tiny targets 100m away, and a slightly larger one 200m away in less that 17 sec. Only had 6 bullets, so fireing blindly wouldn't help. Wink

Ian,

Apparently he did it even with a regular out of the armoury H&K G3!  thumbsup

Hmmm - is it "authored" yet ? Guess I'll hold my breath until Dame Edna is elected as the first President

Yes it is authored. It's a completely 100% brand-spanking-new model too.

As for Dame Edna - a royal as our Head of State?

Really - *tsk tsk.

Picture the scene.

CANBERRA. EARLY MORNING.

JOHN HOWARD: Old woman!
QANTASFOREVER: Man!
JOHN HOWARD: Man. Sorry. What knight lives in that Governor-General's Residence over there?
QANTASFOREVER: I'm thirty-seven.
JOHN HOWARD: I-- what?
QANTASFOREVER: I'm thirty-seven. I'm not old.
JOHN HOWARD: Well, I can't just call you 'Man'.
QANTASFOREVER: Well, you could say 'QANTASFOREVER'.
JOHN HOWARD: Well, I didn't know you were called 'QANTASFOREVER'.
QANTASFOREVER: Well, you didn't bother to find out, did you?
JOHN HOWARD: I did say 'sorry' about the 'old woman', but from the behind you looked--
QANTASFOREVER: What I object to is that you automatically treat me like an inferior!
JOHN HOWARD: Well, I am King!
QANTASFOREVER: Oh, King, eh, very nice. And how d'you get that, eh? By exploiting the workers! By 'anging on to outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society. If there's ever going to be any progress with the--
WOMAN: QANTASFOREVER, there's some lovely filth down here. Oh! How d'you do?
JOHN HOWARD: How do you do, good lady? I am JOHN HOWARD, King of the Australians. Who's Residence is that?
WOMAN: King of the who?
JOHN HOWARD: The Australians.
WOMAN: Who are the Australians?
JOHN HOWARD: Well, we all are. We are all Australians, and I am your king.
WOMAN: I didn't know we had a king. I thought we were an autonomous collective.
QANTASFOREVER: You're fooling yourself. We're living in a dictatorship: a self-perpetuating autocracy in which the working classes--
WOMAN: Oh, there you go bringing class into it again.
QANTASFOREVER: That's what it's all about. If only people would hear of--
JOHN HOWARD: Please! Please, good people. I am in haste. Who lives in that Governor General's Residence?
WOMAN: No one lives there.
JOHN HOWARD: Then who is your lord?
WOMAN: We don't have a lord.
JOHN HOWARD: What?
QANTASFOREVER: I told you. We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week,...
JOHN HOWARD: Yes.
QANTASFOREVER: ...but all the decisions of that officer have to be ratified at a special bi-weekly meeting...
JOHN HOWARD: Yes, I see.
QANTASFOREVER: ...by a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs,...
JOHN HOWARD: Be quiet!
QANTASFOREVER: ...but by a two-thirds majority in the case of more major--
JOHN HOWARD: Be quiet! I order you to be quiet!
WOMAN: Order, eh? Who does he think he is? Heh.
JOHN HOWARD: I am your king!
WOMAN: Well, I didn't vote for you.
JOHN HOWARD: You don't vote for kings.
WOMAN: Well, how did you become King, then?
JOHN HOWARD: The Dame of the Edna,...
[angels sing]
...her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water signifying by Divine Providence that I, JOHN HOWARD, was to carry Excalibur.
[singing stops]
That is why I am your king!
QANTASFOREVER: Listen. Strange women in Moonie Ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
JOHN HOWARD: Be quiet!
QANTASFOREVER: Well, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
JOHN HOWARD: Shut up!
QANTASFOREVER: I mean, if I went 'round saying I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!
JOHN HOWARD: Shut up, will you? Shut up!
QANTASFOREVER: Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system.
JOHN HOWARD: Shut up!
QANTASFOREVER: Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Help! Help! I'm being repressed!
JOHN HOWARD: Bloody peasant!
QANTASFOREVER: Oh, what a give-away. Did you hear that? Did you hear that, eh? That's what I'm on about. Did you see him repressing me? You saw it, didn't you?

(With apologies to Mr Python)
