Keyboard Problems On Laptop :(

Wed Jun 08, 2005 1:11 am

I have an annoying problem with my laptop (German company ipc archtec, about 6 yrs old, US Style letters) - i somehow have the hope that someone can help me:

the letters "p, o, i, y, ., and the down-arrow" often dont work. However, when i take the keyboard out of the slot and hold it up (carefully, not to interrupt the connection), they sometimes do work, even when i put it back, but after some time it stops . it is definitely not a mechanical problem with the keys as such, for 100 % sure.

does anyone have an idea what could be the reason (connex wire?, heat?)? using the onscreen keyboard for the assigned keys is not a long-term solution.  Sad - sometimes, after taking it out and putting it back, it either doesn't work at all or gives weird sequences.. this can be stopped with restart only

typing this was a pain in the butt, as you can recover the assigned letters frequently - any help appreaciated! wud a new kb do? how about comatibility for laptop kbds?

thx for any help!

If it's really 6 yo, you definitely need a new laptop  Smile I've just bought my dad a Acer laptop - cost about 35K rupees (in BKK) and came with built in wireless and other cool stuff.

It sounds like the electrical contacts have died, not sure if that's something that can be fixed. There are many specialist "laptop repairs" types of shops in Bangalore, hence there must be plenty in Delhi as well (Try "Nehru place" for starters). They might be able to fix it, or let you know if it's beyond repair. The only other thing I can think of is to buy a cheap external KB/mouse (should not cost more than 400 or 500 rupees) and use those instead of the built in ones. However that does reduce the "portability" of the laptop.

6 years for a desktop is a LONG TIME, for a latptop it is an eternity!! Not that there has been some kind of AMAZING revolution in laptops over the past few years, but there are a few newer cooler things, that should certainly make it worth upgrading. Not to mention the piece of mind knowing that you don't have to make contortions that would make a gold-medal Gymnast jealous, just to get your basic posting to A.net done  Smile

I spilled beer on the keyboard of my 6 year old Sony Vaio, now the top two rows don't work. I type using a $5 keyboard I got out of the bargain bin at Best Buy. The disk drive hasn't worked for some time now, and even the most routine of downloads can lead to a total freeze-up.

Obviously I need a new one but that just isn't in the budget right now so I am stuck on the information superhighway with a rusted Ford Pinto!!

You made my day!  bigthumbsup

The point is that this laptop is damn stable, you can throw it out of the 10th floor, it will still work, as compared to the modern stuff you only look at sceptically, and which stops working as consequence  Wink.. XP runs perfectly, wireless card integrated (thugh no hotspots here in DEL), network, external sound card (as mine broke Big grin ) etc.. soon, I might really get an external keyboard, and if the monitor breaks, an external monitor, and I will only have the motherboard and the rest external Big grin

Thx, I will go to Nehru place, it is a good idea.. it soundz logical that the electric contacts are broiken, as it get hot, and the room temperature is damn hot, too, with these temperatures here  Sad - if I had the cash I would get a new one, but I think I will do a last upgrade this time till I can afford a new one..

cheers people!
