Going For The All Nighter...

Wed Jun 08, 2005 1:28 pm

I'm currently sitting at my desk working on my final year-end Contemporary Literature project. The time is 12:27am. I'll keep you posted...  crazy

Anyone want to tell your own all nighter stories, go ahead.

Now, back to work...  Sad

Just a tip that I always use when pulling an allnighter. I have heard that classical music always helps you perofrm better. I suggest www.classicfm.co.uk. Great music. Grab some coffee or a red bull too, you'll need it!

I did the night before last, and the night previous I didn't get much either and it wound up with me in the hospital at 10 o'clock last night for 8 hours - dehydration / sleep deprivation / stress / caffeine contributing to heart palpitations, inability to breathe, infection, and fever. It was weird because I've pulled so many all-nighters before and this was strange.

I have three Cokes and a red bull sitting next to me. Thanks for the music tip, also.

Damn, I have to stop distracting myself! Must get back to work!

I'm doing the same thing currently with an english essay but it won't take the whole night. A late exam start helps. Ahh, this last shit to get done, help! But just think Harry, its in sight, its almost OVER!

Being a person who appreciates sleep, I've only done one true all-nighter, and it had nothing to with staying up late for school work...it was coming home for winter break, I had stayed up late packing, and had to get up early to catch a shuttle to the airport, so I just said "screw it" and pulled the all-nighter...felt like total crap the next day though so I don't plan on doing it again...

Strangely, my other two all-nighter close calls (an hour or less of sleep) also both have to do with the day before traveling...once before embarking on a CNS-SYD-LAX-PHL trip straight through (no overnighting anywhere), got about 40 minutes of sleep...I was with a group and we tried to pull the allnighter but most of us failed...and the other was the night before going down to the Jersey shore for a few days with some friends...that was also about 45 minutes of sleep, cause we were just hanging out that night and totally lost track of time...

That's about all that's keeping me going right now. Just 7 more days of high school left.  cloudnine

This is like one of those assignments where if you hand in a completed product, you do pretty well, but if you don't hand it in, you fail. I'd take a 70% right now happily.

Why don't you work during the other 16 hours of the day when you are supposed to be up?

I've been working on it since I got home at 3pm. This is one of those month long projects that I put off a bit,  Wink

Well, only three more pages, 5 poems, and a powerpoint to do, and it's only 1:42.

Good lord that certainly takes me back!!

You guys ever done a double all-nighter. Man, it was rough - I collapsed from exhaustion on the evening after I'd stayed up twice in a row. I worked out I'd been awake for about 50 hours.

I know it sounds completely lame, but truly - take my advice as someone who has been doing assignments for almost 20 years: Make some sort of a start on an assignment when you first get it. If you get your assignments at the beginning of the semester - begin at the beginning of the semester.

You will thank yourself when it's 4am the morning it's due and you still have a long way to go...

Yep, I'm up with you guys. Finally getting to a couple of case studies I haven't had time to do for the last nine weeks. Argh.

Since I did this last night, too, I'm not likely to be much fun tomorrow. But hey, only a couple more days, and I'm done.

I can't speak for Harry, but I *was* working the other 16 hours. I haven't had a day off since sometime in April--this is a torture method that's considered a rite of passage for grad students, I think.

Seems like this quarter I've really gotten hamered--it's probably a function of the classes I ended up having to schedule at the very end of my program. Finance, Strategic Management, Marketing, and my masters' thesis. Sometimes, things just don't let up.

At the sound of the tone, the time will be: 2:43am

I managed to finish my paper, and now I have to start writing these damn poems. I hate poetry so much, especially writing it. That bed behind me looks so inviting, but I have to keep working....

Best thing to do while drunk: watch the Japanese channel on the TV. You'll die of laughter. I once watched it for two hours with my friends, just laughing out asses off. Big grin

Well, it's just about 4:30, and I'm trying to finish up. This night actually hasn't seemed too long, but I know it's going to be a long day tomorrow. Or is that today. Whatever.

Pretty cool, though, when it hit 4:20, all the B6 transcons started popping up on my ACARS, all heading to JFK and BOS. Pretty neat the things you don't see when you are sleeping.

Nothing is worth knackering yourself for. Only one thing matters in life, and that's staying alive. Allnighters simply increase the risk of something horrendous happening like falling asleep at the wheel, walking in front of a bus etc. Don't do it!!!!!!

Don't hand in the project which is due tomorrow = I fail English
Fail English = I lose credit for the class
Lose credit for the class = I don't graduate

I think I can sacrifice one night. Plus, I can just sleep in school in the morning.  Wink

Well, it's 6:15, and I'll be leaving for school soon, and I managed to finish just in time. Thanks to everyone who gave me someone to talk to, glad to say I made it all the way through, and don't feel too bad. Hopefully I can say the same later in the day, but I'm afraid I'll be passed out by then.  Wink

Hey Harry -

Congrats on finishing. Now why don't you share some of that poetry with us? It would bring a tear to Chaucer's eye, no doubt.

I had a close call once, while helping my mother with a college assignment. The only reason that prevented me from going for the all-nighter was a polygraph test at work the following day. So, I figured out 45 minutes of sleep would be better than nothing... It sure was weird to get into bed when it was already dawning!

I spent the next day feeling like a zombie.  tired  It was awful - and that f***ing polygraph test surely didn't help.  irked  To top it off, I couldn't finish the assignment... but then again, I wasn't getting any credit for it (remember, it was my mother's assignment!)

Well, it's been almost 24 hours now since I began my all nighter journey. (Yes, I worked for over 12 hours on the damn project  crazy  ). I still haven't slept yet, except for a quick nap while watching Europa Europa in European History. I got to school at around 6:45, and managed to get everything printed out and in order, and was able to hand the thing in on time. I have to present it tomorrow, though, so now I have to prepare for that.  Sad

I plan to go to bed at a decent hour, though.  Wink

Yeeeah, it got kinda late last night. Or early this morning, whatever you prefer. I got to bed at about 2:30 am and woke up at 7:30. Had some extremely strong coffee that I would never have drunk in different circumstances with the result of being awake and concentrated during the 8:45 to 11:00 seminar and totally unable to concentrate during the 11:00 to 12:30 lecture... English class in the evening was a breeze, though!

The other recent all-nighter was the night before my presentation in cell biology. I went good, and even though I know it's supposedly a bad habit, I work best when pressed for time.

Edit:

Quoting F9Widebody (Reply 1):

From personal experience, I can more or less attest to that. However, it doesn't depend that much on classical, it just needs to be (almost) non-vocal and harmonic. Café del Mar or Röyksopp do the trick for me.
