Being Made Redundant :(

Thu Jun 09, 2005 11:52 am

Well after 3 months of working at Tescos was told the "merry" news yesterday that im going to be made redundant because the people there cant "afford" me.
I guess it was inevitable as I was told the same thing 2 months ago just after I started, whats sort of unfair is that 2 people left during that time and they kept me on, and now 3 people have started there getting rid of me.
I dont know why theyve chosen to single me out, ive always done as they asked, turned up 5 mins earli everyday and leave 5 mins late to ensure everything ive done has been done, I just dont understand.
Anyway apart from sulking ive still got a week to go and looking for work again, hoping to get something at Manchester Airport but probobally unlikely.
Anyone else been in the same situation as me?, can i appeal or isnt it worth working for someone who i kiss his ass for, and get treated like this.

I dunno about Brittish law so I won't even go there suffice it to say, I have never taken legal action against a previous employer, and I feel better for that.

I have been fired from more jobs then I'll EVER admit on any application, but at the end of the day, the reality is that 95% of the time I deserved it, and of the 4% I didn't, I still took a course of one form or another that lead to the dismissal. Maybe once I got a TRUE raw deal... The honest truth, I learned something from ALL those experiences!! Even when I thought they were wrong I never allowed the same situation to occur again no matter how 'right' I thought I was.

For me:
The thing is not to kiss ass, but to NEVER be caught being disrespectful to anyone while you are at work.
Do not trust ANYONE at work with negative company/manager/policy feelings.
As easy as it is at times to 'bitch about the boss' it's a sure fire path to a mistake that lets you out.

Once again, you are not on the correct track.

If I had 50 jobs and only 1 was a real raw deal the % would truthfully be 2%, not the 0.XX % you are alleging.

Well I don't know how the Bri'ish systems works, but are you being fired or layed off? Sounds more like a lay off to me.

If you have only been there 3 months you don't have any rights. Besides, its only Tesco.

Take the positives and look upon it as an oportunity to get a better job. There's always McDonalds...... Wink

It could be that these poeple are working more hours, wheras you are working fewer hours that now overlap, thus it isn't cost effective keeping you on. As you haven't yet worked 3 months, I don't think you have a contract of employment (rather, Tescos's aren't obliged to give you one until 12 weeks employment), so you have very few rights in this.

oh well, sounds more like Tescos was just "using" me until they found someone better, and yet even that person now hates working there, and theyve only been employed for a week now.
Just doesnt seem right that someone who hates the job gets to keep it, and yet someone like me who needs and wants the job is made redundant.
I mean I have more experience than them now, and yet Tescos are willing to train 3 more people just to get rid of someone whos already had the experience?, theres no logic in it.

3 months isnt all that much experience...

If I were you, i'd go get a better job thats a little more secure... (then again, how can a company who made 2 BILLION pounds last year be "insecure" financially???)

Well tomorrows my final 3 hours, im sad because I'll be out of a job but happy because the guy who works there is so corrupt.
I found out his other employee is actually the guy whos dating his daughter :O plus his wife works for him too, so its one for all and all for one.
The cheeky bugger even came up to me on Sunday morning after I had been working an hour and told me to "go home" because I was doing a 11am-4pm shift, last minute and without asking if I even wanted to do it or was avaliable, obviously I didnt go in and my dad was very supportive of this, saying it was unfair to "ditch" it on me last minute and especially as he's employed 6 other people and is making me redundant tomorrow.
So on Thursday im going to citizens advice to see wether I can sue this guy for unfair dismissal or even perhaps for victimising me, as theres been a few occasions where ive been "singled out" for making mistakes when I wasnt trained to do what I did, or when I did something and was unfairly criticised for doing it.
like my dad said, were gonna get the b.st.rd to make sure he doesnt do this to anyone else, he cant get away with it.

I got made redundant from my part time job that i had a few months ago. I know how you feel, it sucks. Fact is though, student's/part timers have few rights in the workplace, if in doubt, read your contract again. It could be worse, the company i worked for gave me £25 cheque redundancy money, that's after working there for over 18 months!

They don't have to give you anything if you've worked less than 2 years or you're under 20.

You worked for them for less than a year, you have no civil claim. Unfortunately.

Why not spend the time trying to get some qualifications and getting a better job?

You might as well realise that you will not get anything out of this except some sort of revenge against the boss.

Write to head office and inform them what is going on, especially the bit where he imploys the guy who is dating his daughter. Inform them that you will also be writing to the local press etc. Let them know you will tell all your friends and family and internet buddies that you have been treated unfairly and will advise them to shop elsewhere. Tesco will not be happy with the bad publicity and will investigate. You won't get a job back but it will not look good on the manager's record and his promotion prospects may well be harmed. There may well have been complaints made against him in the past. Yours could be the one that forces Tesco's hand.

Its not much but it will make you feel better. Make sure you post the replies.

You don't have a claim as such, put it all behind you and treat it as a learning experience.

I've been made redundant twice, both times I've gone on to a better job or something new and challenging. You don't need the crap and bitterness of trying to push something futile through so cut your losses, walk away and ask for a reference. If you leave on good terms then they can't refuse you a reference and that will be more valuable than some half-arsed attempt at a claim.

Thanks guys, im not really looking to "claim" anything, I just want the guy to be disciplined or something over the way he treats his staff, because its not on.
I mean he's not even technically the "boss", as his "boss" is another person, so I think legally he cant hire/fire me anyway, and he sure as hell cant fire me without giving any written warnings for whatever im supposed to have done to cheese the guy off.
And yes, even the family have stopped going to Tesco's now, I think they may have gained 2 billion pounds this year, but next will sure as hell be different, I advise anyone not to work for them as anyone who i've ever met who's worked there has only ever said bad things about the company.
I guess i'll just take it on the shoulder, look at it as a bump in the road..and still carry on.

I've heard exactly the same about Asda and Sainsbury's. Basically it's called working in a supermarket, not much fun when your our age.

Actually VS74741R I didnt mind working there, infact I quite enjoyed it, actually doing something with my time and I felt like I was "useful", if it hadnt been that one boss who has it in for me i'd have loved it even more.

>>> In a nutshell Big grin.

I'm lucky, I have a job that I will never be fired from (except if I do something inanely stupid). I hope I never have to work in a supermarket. By the way, saying you've been 'made redundant' from a part time job that you were only doing for 3 months is a little out of line.. It's hardly anything major and it happens all the time. Thats basically what a part time job is, easy work for little money and needing no skills. You have no rights and they know it!

One of my co-workers who was sacked because of a 'high absence rate' (5 days in 1 year) did this, it actually did get him his job back. Its worth a try, but you might want to aim a little higher than Tesco's anyway. I gave in my notice at my current job (B&Q) a few days ago because I was fed up with being told what to do by people who were stupid. This may sound arrogant, but I have on so many occasions used common sense to solve a problem, then been told to go back and do it the long way by a supervisor, then be asked by my manager to keep on doing it my way because it was quicker and better.

Good luck searching for a new job,

Not sure about your laws over there but taking new people off and then making someone redundant is illegal. I almost took a previous employer to court over a similar issue a few years back.
But yes being made redundnat is not a nice feeling, it has happened to me but as they told me I was about to hand them my resignation anyway as I no longer wanted to work with a such a selfish pack of pricks. Working in business where the entire board of directors is family is a bad idea.

I'm not going into any more detail because it's a family issue, but you are pretty close to the truth there. This is by no means an isolated incident with that company.

Get that reference. It's important. When you do your CV for another job, if you can point to some employment and have a good reference then that is worth so much.

Good luck

Planespotterx, take WhiteHatter's advice and move on. There's nothing to be gained from this situation so leave things on a good note so you can use thee people as a reference. You've got your whole career in front of you to have one job pull you down.

Since you started have you had any feedback on your performance... reviews / assessments etc?
If yes, then what was the feedback?

Did you get taken on, on a temporary or permanent contract?
If a temporary contract then what was the end date?

Have you had any letter of termination from them?

Did you join a union?

Let us know the answers, and I'll give you some more info...
I don't like signatures...
