Tropical Storm Arlene

Sat Jun 11, 2005 3:48 am

Already the US is feeling the effects from TS Arlene which is out in the gulf atm just north of Cuba and heading NNW at 13mph.
The NHC expect this system to intensify briefly before hitting landfall as either a strong Tropical Storm or weak Cat1 Hurricane (which would be the earliest of any season so far).
Recent observations favour the strong TS option, but theres still the possibility of it being names a Hurricane in the next 24-36 hours and as such a Hurricane watch is in effect on the New Orleans coast from New Orleans city to Florida.
The City of New Orleans has been told to keep watch on the system as the storm surge is expected to be anywhere from 2-4 meters high, in Florida already Tornado warnings are in effect for the rainband from Arlenes right hand side wrap-around.

It's going to be raining all weekend in Florida. Thank goodness I'm working tomorrow and have no 'real' plans for Sunday, save watching the grass on my lawn grow THAT much more :

BTW latest Buoy reports near the coast indicate the sea-level has risen 1.5 meters ALREADY, thats even before the central core of the TSA has even organised itself, at the moment theres 7 "cells" rotating close to the central core, but have yet to merge, which is whats holding back the storms strength, as soon as they merge together, the TS will get a "kick" and briefly strengthen, but with being so near to the coast it'll only be a brief strengthening.

Does anyone know if they're evacuating the casinos in the Gulfport/Biloxi area yet? I've got some family that went down ther for the weekend (before they knew this storm was coming), and none of the local sites for down there has mentioned anything.

I concur with Flymia. Here in the Miami Lakes area all we've gotten is rain and some wind, but no thunderstorms.

Alcregular seems like there having a seperate show after the first one if your still watching it now, surprised ITV hadnt known about the storm prior and evacuated the island briefly.

Latest Recon shows more rainfall being pumped into the Florida areas increasing the flooding risk overnight, and still the threat of isolated Tornados.
The storm still moving at 13mph slightly due west of North and is expected to turn more to the NNW later on in the next 18 hours.
Storm is also increasing in size and strength with sustained windspeeds of 65mph..just 10mph shy of Hurricane Cat1 force and a central pressure of 997 and falling.

I talked to my family that went down to Biloxi for the weekend, they're planning on riding it out, based on the current predictions and what the hotel has told them so far.

well Miami have already had reports of wind damage and flooding, and thats just from the main rain-band crossing the FL state, the actual "core" is still out to sea, packing 65mph SUSTAINED winds, and thats even before its expected to hit Cat1 status.

lol was going to say but forgot, it was the mean windspeed that was measured at 86mph, not the groundspeed confirmation which is required to be at least 74mph sustained before its a Cat1 Hurricane, so it still remains a Tropical Storm at the moment as its now making its way onto land.
