"Hollywood actor Sean Penn, adopting the role of a journalist, scribbled in his notebook as Friday prayer worshippers in Tehran chanted 'Death to America.'"

Stopped reading right after that. Mr. Penn, how on Earth did you come to the conclusion attending that "ceremony" was a good idea?  scratchchin

Iran is not our enemy . . .we are not at war with Iran. Sean Penn has a long way to go . . . he's getting there, but not quite there yet.

Perhaps, in the long run some good will come and the Iranian people will also learn from him . . . not everyone in the US wishes them harm.

While I don't wish any harm to Sean Penn, can't we take away his passport & just leave him there? Or can't that be done? Oh well, it's wishful thinking on my part. Regards.

I'd really like to know what he honestly is expecting to accomplish over there. If he was going purely as an 'activist', ok I get it, good for you Mr. Hollywood boy..But if he honestly thinks we are going to regard his journalistc capabilities, he's doing some good drugs... Maybe it's to 'research a role'... who knows...

The United States accuses Iran of developing nuclear weapons and sponsoring terrorism. Iran denies the charges.

Think there is any chance Iran could take Sean Penn hostage and keep him for a few years?

I know we aren't that lucky but we can dream.

When this clown went on his PR trip to Iraq in December of 03, he goes on about believing that Saddam was not that bad of a guy, and was honoured to be invited to go there. After he left, he seemed shocked that was basically forced to say how great Saddam was. He came off as one of the biggest pilacs, seems he hasn't learned from the experiance.

No; it's spelt 'gnarly'.

Moving on...

Without commenting on what I think of Iran, the US, etc., I think it's strange whenever movie or music stars start to think of themselves as expert, relevant voices on anything (except maybe substance abuse!) Why do they think anyone should listen to them?

The flip side of that argument, though, would be to say that they're simply using the position they already have to do something they consider important. In other words, if people are already going to listen to you and give you attention because you're Sean Penn, Bono, Travis Tritt (the only GOP example I could think of  Wink ), you might just as well use your position to try and make a point. Given that we're talking about it, I guess it's obvious that it 'works'!

But the star in question still will not really be 'credible', of course, especially to the side that is opposed to the point he or she is making!
Next flight.... who knows.

Penn could join a newly-assembled ambassador team with Hanoi Jane, Alec Baldwin, Johnny Depp and the Dixie Chicks. We can then send them around the world, to places like N. Korea, the Balkans, Iran, Syria, China and Saudi Arabia. If none of those places keeps them as hostages, we could probably convince them to establish diplomatic ties with the Martians.

Um, so he can enjoy renowned Iranian hospitality or so he can learn Farsi and make amazing movies in Iran?

Wow, the only good thing said in this whole f'ing thread. While not all in the US wish Iran harm, it seems like a fair few here at A.net do

Yep. And have offered full transparency and a return of all spent centrifuge casings to Russia. Also, Iran offered a complete abandonment of all nuclear programs, peaceful or otherwise, in exchange for a restoration of diplomatic relations with the US. The "altruistic" Bush Administration turned them down. So much for peace

Or perhaps we can package up Travis Tritt, Toby Keith, Brittany Spears and Jerry "The King" Lawler and send them to Saudi Arabia, North Korea and Israel and let them find out first hand what our "allies" are really like and where we should actually be taking measures to protect our country

Oh please, you people. I love how everyone jumps to the conclusion that Sean Penn is there to support Iran and denigrate America. The article says next to nothing, and all we can tell from it is that he is just doing journalistic reporting. Why do so many of you have a problem with that?

Do you know how few Western reporters are in Tehran? If all he's doing is giving even-handed reporting, then he's doing all of us a service. We have no information to the contrary.

That statement is foolish hyperbole and a complete overreaction.

Oh, so the Dixie Chicks are evil because they said "we are ashamed to be from Texas" on the day we went to war. Well you know what, at least 50 million Americans agree with them. Get over it.

Thanks ANC, there is at least one voice of reason in this thread.

He has an assignment for the San Francisco Chronicle and the article didn't claim he holds an opinion in favour of the Iranian regime.

Oddly, I don't know if we can take them at their word? However if a genuine offer was made then I do take issue with it.

Well, lets see. The US has as its word that it is not an aggressor nation, yet has sure acted like that. The US promised the Iranian people that it would support democracy, and it didn't, so the Iranian people dumped the dictator they had for what they have now. Iran has not entered into an offensive war in modern times. Even when Iranian diplomats were killed in Afghanistan, likely at the order of the Taliban, Iran did not send the massive troop build up it had at the Afghan border in, which would have resulted in Iran crushing the Afghan regime, yet Iran has been invaded, with US support in modern times. Who's word are we to take here?

Adding to that, if Iran had full diplomatic ties with the US, it would be quite easy to monitor nuclear activity, as it would likely be US companies doing any of the dealing
