"Pete Thornton" Passes Away.

Tue Jun 14, 2005 4:18 am

Dana Elcar, who played Richard Dean Anderson's boss "Pete Thornton" in the action series "MacGyver", has passed away at the age of 77.

Elcar played the role of Pete Thornton in the series from 1986 to 1982. He died in a hospital in California.
During the filming of MacGyver, Elcar started losing his eye sight. However he continued to play the same role, though the eye problem was written into the story.

Elcar also appeared as a guest in more than 100 different TV programs and movies.

Richard Dean Anderson says Dana Elcar made his job so easy in a statement.

I'm sorry to hear this.

I loved how this guy played McGyver's Boss. I'll definitely miss him when I watch McG's reruns.
(btw, 1982 to 1986)  Smile

Thanks Thomas.

RIP... Remember in Season One, he actually played a different character in the pilot episode. I can't remember the character's name, but it was him. They didn't have the Phoenix Foundation until later (Season 2 I think?). He played Pete Thornton though, in season 1, just as more of a government bigwig, not with the PHX Foundation yet. He was a good actor.

Did he play the role backward?

Rest in Peace . . .

He appeared in Dark Shadows as Sheriff George Patterson in 35 episodes also.

He was also in two of my more favored movies, 2010, and The Sting.

Just want to know: Is it from 1982 to 1986 or 1986 to 1992 ?

Lets not forget his tv aviation connection as Col Laird on Baa Baa Black Sheep.

He was a pretty good actor who specialized in characters. We used to live that show. My first three years in the Army were as a combat engineer and we used to try everything McGyver did.....great way to experiment and start fires.

RIP

Funny how he'd get on "Pappy" Boyington. It's a shame whenever a good actor like Mr. Elcar dies. Lately all we get is just people who can fake an acting job... special effects does all the rest.

Whoops, it was supposed to read 1986-1992. That's what the source said.

Of course he is. Always MacGyver style... with one second remaining.

Dana Elcar was a great actor and a good man... I'll always remember him as the head of the Phoenix Foundation who continued to work despite his blindness (they wrote his real-life condition into the character and used it in several episode plots.)

RIP Pete Thornton, we loved ya, 1986-1992.

You truly don't know the half of it. I am veeerry lucky to be here. That said, we never destroyed anything we couldn't pay for. Remind me to tell you about the coyote trap that required arty simulators.....or the smoke grenade-tied-to-the-bumper-instead-of-shoes-at-the-wedding-reception trick.

Angus MacGyver would have been proud....Pete Thornton would have been really pissed. Just like the show....

I wan't a big MacGyver fan but when I watched it, I enjoyed Dana Elcar's role.

I also liked him in http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073961/ "Baa Baa Black Sheep"
