No Pun Intended?

Tue Jun 14, 2005 2:05 pm

Question: If you made a statement that after you realized you made a pun and it wasn't intended, why excuse yourself (by inserting 'no pun intended') and leave the pun there?

That is like warning people that you're gonna fart, do it, then say sorry when you had every intention of doing it. Except, you weren't aware that doing it could bug anyone but that you are not liable because you warned them. They they have any problem with it is irrelevant; you were gonna fart, that's it.

I do it all the time and I do excuse myself cuz everybody does it.

Technically, you should not be aware you made a pun to then say it wasn't intended. To put them in the same sentence...just sounds like laying trip wire and telling people that there is trip wire there, but if they fall, it was not intended.

I'm not compaining, I just see it as funny cuz it seems backwards.

That reminds me of the study where 10 puns that were tested on various people to see if they laughed. Unfortunately, no pun in ten did.

Because sometimes we make jokes that we see as funny an harmless, but for some reason some person has taken offense to it. We than say "no pun intentended" because even though we meant to say the joke or whatever we didn't mean for it to offend anybody.

(sigh) Why does this sounds like bait?

But it isn't your problem as long as you were not made aware, but I kinda get it. When I realize my puns, there were not originally meant to be funny, I just do not pay attention to what I'm saying until I re-read it. Then I fix it; I perfer not to leave the pun there, but I don't catch myself. Other times I don't care.

Again, I don't say things to be intentionally funny; in a discussion board, it should be possible to edit what you say such that the pun never happened, who could get offended?

Oh come on, Lehpron! You know puns bring out the comic tragic in most people. Maybe that's why people leave puns in their posts, or signal them in conversation with a quick no pun intended at the end. They're pleasantly suprised to see they've managed, through no great effort, to insert a clever little witticism into their regular conversation.

Which reminds me of the story of those 2 weevils; the first went on to star in various Oscar-winning movies, the other stayed home and managed the farm, naturally becoming known as the lesser of two weevils.

Ok excuse my ignorance but what exactly is a pun. I still don't get what exactly the phrase "no pun intended" means. Although I do know when to use it, so I roughly understand the meaning but can someone please enlighten me? I'm wondering this quite a while now.
