What Came First: The Chicken Or The Egg?

Fri Jun 17, 2005 5:06 am

What do you think and why?

I say the egg, because everything has to start from something more fundimental.

Considering evolution...

There were two chicken-like animals whose sex cells contained mutations.

Upon mating and fertilisation, the sex-cells fused and formed the first true chicken zygote. This zygote was housed in an egg. So technically speaking, the egg came before the chicken.

The question only sounds like a paradox when you´re confusing identities.

The same egg the chicken crawled out of came before the chicken.

The chicken came before the same egg the chicken laid.

It´s just a sloppy specification which doesn´t allow for a proper answer as long as it isn´t filled in.

If you´re looking at it on the generic level, there were eggs long before there were chicken. So there.

No paradox at all. Big grin

God created the chicken, then came the egg. Just like Adam and Eve, they were created, they didn't exist as a fetus, or baby.

The egg came first. The egg evolved out of a soup of chemicals in the primordial Earth, then the chicken came out of the egg. Then that chicken laid an egg...and then another chicken came out of the egg...that chicken then laid another egg..and so on... Big grin

Oh, come on! Don´t chicken out with the all-purpose theological escape!

Not really an escape if you ask me...for then within the realm of theology you delve into many more questions. Observe:

Now we all know God created Adam & Eve...and Eve apparently came from the rib of Adam...but how was Adam really created? By clay as some say? Or was God slaving away in a lab working hard with "heavenly nano-technology" to create prototype gametes that when mixed would launch the most ambitious life creating project of his since the venerable cockroach which STILL lives (arguably the longest product cycle in history). Millions of lines of genetic code had to be flowcharted, coded, and developed, and that's just for one set of DNA! Let's not forget the seemingly limitless combinations avaiable for our human species alone. Finally God merges the first ever Sperm and Egg together in a test tube and shazzam! We have a human.

Among the most complex and advanced biotech achievements ever developed by the good Lord...loaded with all the bells and whistles, warm blooded circulatory system, advanced processing unit located in the skull, opposable thumbs, etc. Miles of veins, arteries, complex nerves (the fiber optics of his time?), and intestinal tract. Sure, not all systems are as refined as previous models...scent, sight, and hearing were arguably not focused on as much...perhaps to focus more research on the advanced brain unit? Or did management keep shutting off the funding tap? Who knows?

And after the first ever fertilization process, how did God nurture this creation through the 9 month gestation period? Did he build a special incubator at this moment, kind of like when the first 747 was being assembled while its factory (Everett) was still being completed...like the "aluminum avalanche" only with tissue. "Tissue Avalanche"?

And what of the bugs that plagued this advanced design...the wars, the inexplicable stupidity, and all the diseases we are vulnerable to? Back to the drawing board?

How much did God spend on R & D? Has me made a return on this obviously massive investment? We have yet to see a quarterly report. When was certification for the design achieved? Does the human race meet ISO 9000 standards? Was there a "chicken test" performed where frozen chickens were chucked at static test versions of us? So many questions.

So you see, that was hardly an "escape".  Wink

And yes, I have spent too much time in engineering studies.  Wink

A chicken and an egg are lying in bed.

The chicken is smoking a cigarette with a satisfied smile on it's face and the egg is frowning and looking a tad put out.

The egg mutters to no-one in particular "Well, I guess we answered THAT question then."
