Bigger Jerks: Fedex Or UPS Drivers?

Sat Jun 18, 2005 2:31 am

At what cost overnight delivery?

One of the most prevalent of today's road hogs; the overnight parcel delivery vans. They illegally block entire lanes of traffic with not even a warning from authorities. They file through traffic lights like mourners attending a funeral. They clog up main arteries with lard-esque effectiveness.

They may all be nice when it comes to handing the goods to the recipient and getting the signature, but often forgotten is the manner in which these parcels are delivered. When it comes down to it, who are the bigger dicks on the road? (I'm sure our resident funboys will chime in with anecdotal evidence of who HAS bigger, but that's another thread entirely - one I hope to never see). Would you want these people handling YOUR package? (no pun intended)

But I digress. I have to say that UPS douchebags are, in general, FAR less courteous and much more agressive drivers. Now why is this? Is it because they feel empowered by a union affiliation? Maybe the brown uniforms make them look AND drive like pieces of shit.

By no means is this a characterization of ALL UPS drivers and it certainly does not absolve all Fedex drivers of any wrongdoing. While each have their good and their bad, UPS just has far more of the bad. I don't have any affiliation with or loyalty to either of these companies. Please do not bring DHL/Airborne or any other overnight parcel delivery companies into the discussion as their smaller numbers prevent accurate comparison with the big 2. And USPS is not applicable because the delivery vans they use are pretty much go-karts with a roof.

I look forward to your comments and observations.

Did you hear about the FedEx and UPS merger?

It's going to be called FedUP.

Sorry, it's Friday and I'm punchy! Couldn't resist. To be honest, I've never had a problem with either in terms of their driving behavior.

Well for what it's worth, FedEx and UPS did not get to be FedEx and UPS by lollygagging around and taking their sweet time. Hey, the deliveries gotta get there.

Now if I could just figure out why they spend so much time and energy wasting their time making residential deliveries during the day, when most people aren't home. They end up leaving those "sorry we missed you" notes and end up coming back to deliver the same freight two or three times. It would seem to me that they could still further improve their bottom line by making deliveries either when people are home, or giving couple-hour ETA's so that people can arrange to be home, or both.

There's a difference between lollygagging and driving responsibly.

Easy. The idiots who order things have them sent there. Whenever I order something shipped UPS/Fedex or whtever, it is always sent to my business address if I know I won't be home.

re: FedEx
I agree, or at least extend there store hours of operation.
I remember getting those 'sorry we missed you' notes and I was told I could drive all the way down to South San Francisco (near SFO) to pick up my package during there business hours which closes at 5:30 PM.
HELLO!?!?!?
There operation hours are the same as there delivery hours! Also there center to pick up items is way out in no man’s land where nobody lives so getting there doing there operating hours are difficult.

I like UPS much better.
At least there shipping and receiving area is conveniently located in the city and has weekend operating hours. Also UPS uses DC8s and 747 classics  bigthumbsup , better looking livery and best of all, they are Unionized.

I'd say FedEx gets my nod. I have almost been squashed by a couple of their trucks.

And, as 'Fly has pointed out, UPS brings the occasional DC-8 into PIE, every now and then, so I find it hard to fault UPS for much.

I have no probs with FedEx or UPS, but around here the yellow DHL drivers (formerly Airborn Express) are the worst! I think it's because they mostly have tweens working for them. They are worse than your average ignorant driver.

We have both deliver here several times a day. The normal delivery drivers are not too bad. The ones that really piss me off are the priority overnight drivers, especially FEDEX. The guy on our route is a real POS. Once I went out and challenged him on his wreckless driving through our parking lot. I advised him that if he didn't slow down and be careful through here, I would escalate the situation. He actually DARED me too.... said if I wanted my packages on time, I'd should stay out of his business. Well, coincidentally, I had a meeting that afternoon with their CS rep. (They were hoping I would sign an exclusive contract with them, as I not only receive many packages a day, I also ship anywhere from 10 to 50 everyday to locations around the world.) Anyway, once I explained what had happened earlier, the CS rep called their safety dept, and I had the guy in my office that afternoon eating crow. He still delivers to our place, albeit at a much slower pace, and we are both cordial to each other.

Why is that Fly? I've been in unions, and I've been on the management side of the house. Nowadays for the most part, unions have outlived their usefulness, and have become a crutch for laziness!! IMHO

Now, before I get flamed, they had their place, and in some parts of the country, they still do. But around here, a union basically keeps lazy ass people that don't want to EARN their paycheck employed.

I'm not sure. We get two 727s everyday from FEDEX and on flight a day from UPS, an A300 I think, but not sure. I didn't know that the FEDEX boys could ride up from and the UPS guys not. I might be able to find out though.

To hell with the vans, the FedEx transfer trucks are hell on wheels!!! If you see one in your rear-view you might as well jump a lane and get the hell out of his way. I've always found UPS guys to be friendly, and sure they speed, but it's nothing like those crazy FedEx guys.

UPS has the worst delivery guys.

Back at the apartment the asshole wouldn't walk his lazy Teamster ass upto the third floor with a 6lb package on more than one occasion, dropping it off in the office rather than even bothering to see if anyone was home. I sent that damned thing next day air for a reason. Anyway.. by the time 7pm rolls around and all deliveries are supposed to be done, the office is closed and I don't get my replacement hard drive until the next day, meaning I went another night with a crippled computer with an assignment looming.

Another occasion:
I don't blame the lazy teamsters for not lugging a 50lb monitor up the stairs if he wasn't sure anyone was home, he could have knocked on the damn door before lugging it up there, instead the asshole just dumped that at the office too, this is even after we had put in a complaint with UPS following the previous incident.

In the shooting community there was also some sort of a boycott going against UPS. Apparently if you want to ship a firearm by UPS it MUST go next day because they got sick paying claims on guns that got stolen going UPS ground. I guess UPS wants their customers to pay the penalties for their criminal employees. Air packages get handled less and by fewer people so there is a lower theft/loss rate.

I have only had one problem with Fedex. Once very recently my girlfriend had a package sent Fedex to the new house. We were not home so the driver left it with the neighbors, who we do not really know. We called them up and got the matter resolved so they know not to do that now, it hasn't been a problem since.

I have also had no problems with Fedex Ground or DHL.

I live on a U-shaped street that begins and ends on the same cross street. There are about 20 houses on my 800-foot-long street. It's located 300 feet from the western Wisconsin UPS distribution center.

Half of the time a package due to be delivered via UPS, the supervisor calls to ask where my house is. The message is always the same. "The driver can't find your house. He's tried to deliver for the past two days and can't find it." I ask, "Have to tried Mapquest. com? Or Yahoo maps? Apparently not. You know FedEx and DHL always can find my house and they have to come from Minneapolis. You're 300 feet away. What's the problem?" The reply is always the same: "We have a new driver."

BULLSHIT! It's the same driver every time and he's been delivering for at least three years!

Four years ago, I was expecting a large order of electrical supplies that I needed quickly for a job. I waited and waited and waited. I finally walked over to the distribution center and talked to the same supervisor. He said, "We couldn't find your house. We tried delivering three times. There were eight boxes, but we had to return them to the sender." What a fucking Mickey Mouse way to run a company!

Working for a law office, we get stuff sent to us from FedEx, UPS, and DHL. Now, I like our UPS guy well enough, but there was one instance that ticked me off a bit. Occasionally I have to be our receptionist's lunch relief which is when UPS typically arrives. Soon after 9/11, our office policy changed to where no weapons, including knives, are allowed in the office unless you're a badged LEO. Coincidentally we had a new guard. UPS guy comes in, goes through the metal detector and the guard asks him to empty his pocket. The UPS guy does so and in his pockets is a pocketknife. The guard tells the UPS guy to go back down to his truck and leave the "weapon." UPS guy goes ballistic, argues with the guard, snatches back his knife, takes the packages and leaves.

For the next 2 days we noticed no UPS packages were being delivered. We finally called his supervisor and were told that he had been registering things as being "undeliverable due to a closed office." I'm guessing his supervisor chewed him a new one, as the next day he showed up - without his knife, but with all the packages that we were supposed to have received.

In my opinion, UPS=UNRELIABLE Piece of S$#%...they have screwed up my few deliveries so often, that they earned that title...they have: left valuable electronics (hi-end VCR, Laptop, etc) clearly marked "Signnature required" without getting one...left package by front door in the rain, instead of by the door that is obviously used to enter house in the CARPORT...damaged a box with laptop shipped by Dell so badly that it had to be returned...etc...

But last year, the FedEx ground guy here clipped one of the lanterns by my entrance and busted it up pretty good...he said he'd pay for repairs to it...and he did...but it cost him good! The cost of repairs was $250 at local lantern shop...couldn't get new one as that would havn't matched the other one...

Hmm, I haven't had a problem with FedEx or UPS drivers - it's those USPS guys with those piddly little trucks they'll occassionally swing around the road like they own it. And, by the way, UPS is right - the USPS wouldn't stand a chance in the open market.

FedEx seems to be much better than UPS. I've had so many parcels misplaced by UPS. Our home number is 11A...and it's clearly marked in big bronze letters outside the wall...but still these guys manage to screw it up, they ALWAYS end up giving our packages to house no. 11, and our neighbor ends up calling us to deliver our packages...the UPS guy left them there....because they couldn't find 11A...arghhh..idiots, can't they read the sign?!

I haven't had any worries with FedEx so far. For domestic parcels I trust Australian Air Express...they're much better than FedEx, UPS and DHL.

The only thing that pisses me off about the FedEx driver on our route is how he sticks the door tags to the window beside the front door when there's a doorhandle inches away... go figure.

UPS guys do not seem to obey the parking regulations. I wonder how many tickets they get, and who has to pay for them? I see them park with wheels up on the sidewalk, which cracks the concrete, and I saw one guy put the front of his truck out on the roadway of a highway, even though he had room to safely park on the customers property. But I have always received my packages shipped via UPS. USPS does okay, also. They get shipped to my P.O. Box. I pay $70. per year to have my mail safeguarded.

In my opinion, FedEx is FAR superior. UPS consistently arrives at my house at about 6pm, which is iunexcusable for packageas sent air. It absolutely peeves me off when I am waiting for something very important. I have consistenly sent FedEx in the past, and have often had deliveries arrive ahead of schedule. 50% of the time, their "Saver" (3 Day) packages end up being overnight. I have never, ever had UPS deliver early. In addition, with FedEx's recent purchase of Kinko's, you can ship FedEx Ground for far cheaper than UPS Ground and get better service.

It would seem to me that they could still further improve their bottom line by making deliveries either when people are home, or giving couple-hour ETA's so that people can arrange to be home, or both.

FedEx has a new line designed to remedy this, called Home Delivery, it is the residential branch of FedEx Ground. They dno't deliver on mondays, because with either company, no packages arrive on sundays. The real kicker, is that FedEx HD DOES deliver on Saturdays, for no extra charge. Combine that with the fact that they stay out late at night - until 8, and chances are, they will get there when you are home. AND, it's cheaper than UPS by alot.

As others have said, though, at least around here, DHL is bar-none the worst. They often go 15 miles an hour over the speed limit, on residential streets with children around, which is something I cannot stand.

Regards.

I think DHL drivers are inconsistent. In one city they are pricks, in another they are ok.. I am pretty certain DHL/Airborne use contract delivery companies and that could be a big part of it.

I've never had a problem with either. At my work we get both UPS and FedEx deliveries. Everything from corporate comes UPS, and paychecks from ADP come via FedEx. No problems with either

Only thing really that I've noticed is that the FedEx guys generally have no personality and the UPS guy will hang out for a minute and talk.

But, FedEx does have nicer colors.

Interestingly, I just found out that my sister will be a driver for UPS around Christmas. She said that UPS' drivers have to attend three weeks of training, and around the busy Christmas time, UPS has the young people in the office driving trucks delivering packages. She's an industrial engineer in Memphis who just started with UPS June 6.

I used to be a FedEx driver from 1997-99.

I was a part-time pickup driver, except on Saturdays. On Sat. I was a delivery driver. I had a big route with lots of deliveries and they all had to be out by noon on Sat. If the packages were late, Fedex would be liable for the shipping cost. Since Overnight letters were $12.00 + Sat Delivery Charge of $10, I think, this could end up being some bucks.
I drove like hell and had no time for idle chit chat. I was friendly but hurried. My raises are directly related to my performance. It was actually calculated by packages per hour delivered/ picked up + other factors.

On another note. If you regularly receive FedEx packages you can be set up on a "release list." They put you on list and all packages delivered to your door are left there. We actual preferred to release them to customers rather than haul them back to the station.

(no offense to you ORFlyer)

No problem there Fly.... and I do agree the FEDEX guys are real asses compared to the UPS drivers. Although the below quote is very true as well.

Well, I think my screen name gives away who I think is the best. I've been wtih UPS for 20 years and, by far, I think UPS drivers are the most courteous. The DHL drivers in the Louisville area are the most problematic I would say.

People on this forum have had bad luck with all of the carriers. What it boils down to is people. UPS hires more people than any of the other carriers and does it's best to put the right people in the right position but sometimes it doesn't work out. I hope, for those of you who complained, that it does in the future.

As far as reliabiltiy -- UPS has the highest delivery record of all of the carriers -- that's pretty impressive to me.

DHL drivers in the Boston area make FedEx and UPS drivers look good in my opinion...

I would have to agree for my area too (AZO). But out of FedEx and UPS, FedEx is BY FAR the worst here. ALL of the UPS drivers I've EVER met have been NOTHING but nice, way beyond the call of duty if you ask me. And for that, I only use UPS.

This past Sunday I noticed a yellow DHL DC-9 parked at RDU (I was on WN Flight 2769 en route to BNA to visit my father). Until then, I didn't know DHL even flew the Diesel 9s. Normally, I only see DHL 727s... at least at PHL.

Isn't DHL now partly (or completely) owned by UPS? A friend of mine, who's a UPS driver, mentioned something to me about a UPS-DHL relationship. Not sure to what extent.

Isn't Airborne Express now part of DHL as well?

Another thing I like about DHL is they have AN-24s.  Cool
I wish we got those here.

Well...I'm a FedEx driver and I see plenty of morons driving around as well. Talking on the cell phone...eating...smoking..you name it.

EDIT: Saturday shipments cost $12.50 extra in addition to shipping costs. FedEx is starting a new residential release program on June 27th. You can have direct signature required, indirect, or a release. Releases are great for drivers....UPS has releases on all their residential deliveries. Our drivers are hurried....but courteous. This morning I left our station at 8:50AM(due by 10:30AM) and had 21 Priority overnight stops....which included 4 bulk stops. You're damn right we have to hurry. People pay alot of money to have their packages delivered on-time.

Skyway1 I agree with you there. The biggest jerks I've encountered are the 4-wheelers (cars, pickups, etc). FedEx, UPS and USPS drivers here are all pretty good. I drove motorcoaches for a year and saw plenty of stupid, dangerous or downright uncourteous driving on the part of the 4-wheelers. Sometimes our drivers could loaf along if the trip length and schedule allowed. However, if we were running to LA with a charter group or worse, an Amtrak substitution, you were hoofing it to make it to the end of the line within the amount of time allowed by the Hours of Service law and not busting the speed limit. We ran the Amtrak subs out of Tucson, so that meant we had to serve Maricopa, Yuma, Palm Springs, Pomona and Ontario. If you were lucky you got to run nonstop to LA. You were ok if you got to run LA via Yuma. However if you got Maricopa, Palm Springs, Pomona and Ontario you wer screwed.

Worst driver I encountered was while I was driving a contract shuttle in southern Colorado for the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. At the top of Cumbres Pass I had to make a stop for the railroad crossing there at the old station site. Some clown in a rented RV decided that he didn't want to stay behind me and passed me ON THE SHOULDER! I had a full load of passengers (57) and everyone on the right hand side saw this moron. If I'd gotten the RV's tag number, you bet I'd have called it in to the Colorado Highway Patrol. 4-wheelers are by far worse than most commercial drivers.

I can't say. I've had the same UPS Driver for around 3 years now. She's really nice and I can just about set my watch by her.
