Ever Had Your Bike Stolen?

Fri Jun 24, 2005 6:23 pm

Have any of you guys/girls ever woken up one morning and as usual looking forward to go to work, and suddenly found out that your bike has been stolen?
That happened to me this morning. Damn I was pissed!

I've actually stolent my bike once.

I had lost the keys to the lock, so I purchased a metals-saw, and sawed the padlock in front of everybody to see, during rush hour, at Aylesbury train station.

Sorry to hear that.

It happened two times already. I even had two locks but then I realized they were not strong enough. That is why also I use used bikes, not new ones. The risk is to big. A friend of mine had her EUR800 bike (Gazelle) stolen last year. Luckily it was insured.

I've had my bike stolen once, also. It was last summer, and since I had work during a weekday, my parents weren't home so I rode my bike the 3 or so miles to work. Well one day I had left behind the bike lock for my sister, and put my bike against the wall of the CHURCH I work at, away from public eye. Well sure enough some kids must have seen it from a distance and managed to get back there and steal it. I don't know how anyone could steal someone else's materials without feeling remorse, let alone stealing it from a church.

I've been seriously lucky and never had mine stolen. I studied at University of the West of England in Bristol, UK, and the bike theft there was epic. Everyone I knew who rode there regularly had had their bikes stolen at some time, some losing up to 8-10 in 2 years.

There were security cameras all over the place but the guards would never let you inspect the tapes. Almost leads me to believe that they were in on it.

In fact I believe the whole city of Bristol was one of the biggest places for bike crime, probably something to do with the enormous (and relatively wealthy) student population who all have decent bikes. I even know of a guy who was bike jacked on Park Street, a really upmarket, busy shopping street!

I had my bike(s) stolem twice in two years, first time was in summer 2003, which was my fault, left the bike outside the shop while i popped in to buy a drink. Came out about 30 seconds later and the bike is gone. Second time was only a few weeks ago, i locked the bike at the station bike stand (coil lock) in the morning, came back in the afternoon and the bike was gone along with the lock.

I had mine stolen too back in 1998. Since then, I bought myself a motorbike and you normally don't get it stolen here!  rotfl

well .. I had my bike stolen -- part of it was my fault.

I rode my bike to a coffee house and sat outside (deck area) for relaxing time. I was talking and talking with my friends. It got dark (sun set). I was having good time that I FORGOT my bike after the coffee house closed. I walked home.

The next morning, I was looking for my bike in my home. "Where is my bike!?" "Oh, I left it outside the coffee house"

Gone.

Unfortunately, yes. We actully do have a lot of guys coming over the border overnight to get in your house. It happened to me 3 times in 15 years... France is a 30-40 min drive from where I live. And towards Geneva, you're out o Switzerland in no time!

But let's say pickpocketing is not as much as in other places. It is relatively safe around here

Well I have had mine stolen but not involving work.
See everytime I go inside I put my bike away, for like 7 years (Bike was still in great condition) and the ONE time I left it in my neighbors driveway while we went in the house, some kids just walked by and took it. I was so mad because I loved that bike and I don't think they make it anymore. So finally a year later I got a new one and I ALWAYS put it away and never leave it out. Alot of kids come in from the next town and take the bikes in my area and go back, I am like a 1 minute walk from here. (Once you cross the LIRR tracks they stop looking for you unless the cops in that town go out and look for it and they probably won't do that for a kid in the next town).

Ugh. I've had two bikes stolen. It's horrible. The first one had a lot more sentimental value than the second:

1) New Haven, CT, August 1998: I u-barred the bike to a metal post, but I wasn't thinking and mistakenly u-barred only the front wheel, not the body of the bike. I come back 8 hours later to fine just one wheel barred to the post.

2) Melbourne, Australia, August 1999: Locked it up on a busy public street overnight. Gone in the morning. But that bike was a 2nd-hand piece of crap.

Still, it sucks either way. You feel violated, in a way. I hope you either get it back or get a nicer one soon.

When I was around 15 or so me and two friends of mine were riding our bicycles, when six Russian blokes, five years older and two times stronger, blocked our way and gone were the bikes.

When I was about 5, some kids from up the road, who were real bullies and their parents didn't give a toss about anyone or anything else. The kids took my bike from the garage, while I was even in the garage. They were that quiet I never even noticed. A few minutes later after I had noticed my bike was gone my next door neighbour arrived at the front door with the thief and the bike, which was wrecked. The cops arrived and the kids were taken home. The parents refused to pay for a new bike after the kid confessed cause even thou he was a bullie he was scared of the cops, intill the cops said that they could be charged and the kids removed from their custody and put in homes. Ever since that day till they moved out of town, the parents tried to get their revenge on me, the dad tried on several attempts to hit me while driving his van. He ended up with criminal charges being layed against him and thats when I noticed a for sale sign outside their home.

Last year when I was sitting at the computer, I heard a car braking heavily outside my house and looked out the window to see plenty of smoke and some kids dumping bikes and running off towards the local park, then a few seconds later 2 cop cars arriving with lights flashing, one took off towards the park car park further down the road while one parked over the road and the cops ran off towards the park. About one minute a dog unit arrived and parked over the road with the dog and cop running off towards the park. The dad was chasing the thiefs in his 4WD while his wife was in another car in hot pursuit while on a hands free talking to the cops.

 thumbsup  Good old vigilante-ism!

I had mine stolen along with my brothers when our garage was broken into last year. Alas it was along with about £8000 worth of other stuff including our ride on lawnmower, some antique garden furniture (that we were looking after for safe keeping!  rotfl  ) and lots of gardening equipment.

In some ways it wasn't too bad because I bought it in a phase of teenage oneupmanship when I was about 15yrs old, your friend has £1000 mountain bike so you get £1200 mountain bike etc etc. Mine was only about £600 new in 1998, and my brothers was about £1100. Incidentally they left his brand new Specialized racing bike which was worth about £1500!
