Oprah And Hermes

Mon Jun 27, 2005 5:57 am

Oprah Winfrey arrived at the Parisian luxury goods store Hermes a little after closing but seeing several customers shopping inside she wanted in also. Not so Ms. Winfrey. She was politely told "we are closed".

And now the hissy fit starts. Is it racism, poor service or just "We are closed"?
I am all for great customers service but....And now Hermes issues an apology.
''Hermes regrets not having been able to welcome Madame Oprah Winfrey and the people accompanying her to give them all the attention and service that Hermes is committed to giving each of its clients in the world.Hermes expresses its sincere regrets for any misunderstanding that these circumstances could have caused.''

Hmmm?

Is this an example of a person not getting their way? Or is the story an example of not taking care of you good customers. One thing seems certain. Oprah is no longer a customer of Hermes.

The jury says.......?

Closed is closed, unless arranged in advance. This applies to both me, or Oprah Winfrey. Hardly racism!

I think Hermes is very very wrong for this. Yes they have store hours BUT the BIG difference between Oprah and others is that she is a BILLIONAIRE. I think Hermes really messed up business wise. Of course we could argue that store hours are what they are and she shouldn't get special treatment but hey, I've had stores opened up for me after they were closed...and I'm not freaking Oprah! Would I call it racism?????? I don't know. I don't like throwing the racism card like that. Although, Oprah has called this her "Crash" moment which is what happens in that movie. Hermes knows they messed up big time because there are people who will do ANYTHING Oprah says and you know she will go public about this. So, all those rich ladies who love Oprah will end up not going to that store anymore. You don't say no to a person with that much power and influence and not to mention freaking money. Besides, its not like the employees leave right at the time of closing. They have to stick around so they should of let her in. I think it was in very very bad taste of them to say no to her. What makes it worse is that it was only 15 minutes after closing. I mean, seriously...15 minutes later and you can't open the door?????That's just ridiculous. I can't stand how these high end department store workers forget that they are just workers and nothing else yet they act they are royalty just because they work at an expensive, high end store. So, I say what Hermes did to Oprah was wrong and no matter how much they apologize, there will be a very bad result of their less than perfect actions.

No Hermes is totally right they had a PR event taking place and not other customers shopping, now maybe the whole situation is in how she was told, after all sometimes it is not what you say, it is how you say it. Get over it Oprah the world does not revolve around you.

I have to say that yes the French know who Oprah is, but to their credit they might not care "who" she is.

Billionaire or Nanoaire closed is closed. I only wish the store had issued a statement saying "blah blah... we regret that Ms. Oprah could not understand the sign saying the store was closed, however we hope the enclosed coupon good for free giftwrapping on any purchase of $50.00 (US) will help make ammends"

Sorry but at this time I feel no sympaty for Oprah, I feel only a bit of shame as this is the kind of thing that people think of when they think about Americans abroad (but don't you know who I am??!!)

Sorry but you can't buy anything at Hermes for $50.00. And of course gift wrapping is complimentary. I don't think Oprah would appreciate that gesture.

No, the French don't know who she is. Some, like me, know because we've seen a few stuff about her on TV. But I guess that for more than 90% of the French population Oprah Winfrey means absolutely nothing.

Good one, IHAP!

All I've heard about Oprah Winfrey is that she's a black female US talk show host. So?

I think this was a big publicity event.

Oprah's probably shopped at Hermes a 1000 times. So she and her staff probably knew that the store closes at a certain time. Yet, she and her armada show up after closing time. Hello? Shouldn't someone - anyone - on Oprah's staff of 1000 have called up the store and told them that de facto American TV royalty is about to show up?

They then leak this story to the press. Why? So that she can have a gab fest about it in the fall. Yack, yack, yack, yack. With all the publicity, everyone's going to tune in, and ratings will be sky high. And since this happened in France, she not only gets the demographic of black women (who may have been subjected to the subtle racism of store owners in more mundane places like CVS and Macy's), but the anti-French suburban GOP soccer mom contingent as well.

FWIW though it's my understanding that it's their corporate policy that even if they are having a PR event that they let celebs in to shop and that the store manager had said something about not letting Winfrey in because they had had some problems with "North Africans" in the preceding weeks as being the reason why she was denied entrance.

Don't get me wrong - I despise Oprah and the Kool-Aid drinking hens who worship her worry me just a tad. The sad thing is if she were to run for president there's a good chance she'd win based on her "followers/fans" alone.

Hon, Oprah is THE US talk show host, a virtual God among the Gab-fest crowd. I was fascinated to discover that she is insanely popular in Japan, Hong Kong, India, the Mid East, and beats all talk shows in popularity in the UK.

. . . and that the store manager had said something about not letting Winfrey in because they had had some problems with "North Africans" in the preceding weeks as being the reason why she was denied entrance.

I think that was a rumor that has been denied now by both sides.

I seriously doubt that, among the throngs of women in US that give a rats @$$ about what Oprah thinks, there are many with the financial means to shop at Hermes. Seems to me her influence is centered among people who would literally break down in tears upon receiving the "windfall" of a free $25,000 Pontiac (you could probably count me among them - of course I would be crying again when the tax man comes along asking for about $10,000). Anyway, her viewers hardly seem to be the type to pay thousands for a handbag. I bet Hermes is not terribly worried about worldwide sales figures just yet.

That rumor was denied. Even a racist Frenchman (woman) can tell the difference between a North African and a Black African or African American. They even have different terminology for all three.

She is just stirring up more racial tension in a city already about to explode from it.

I can just see Le Pen comment on it and demand that no African Americans be allowed in France (if he hasn't said it already).

Unless she has proof that some racial comment was said she needs to keep the race card out of it and just stick to a complaint that they wouldn't extend store hours just for her.

Even still she (or one of her 10-15 people in her entourage) should have called ahead and told them to prepare for a VIP, which I thought was standard procedure(?).

Absolutely.
Which is why I think it's a big publicity stunt.
As for the North African nonsense, that kind of crap can only fly in the US where most people think that Africa is one country filled with people of one racial ancestry.

Maybe she is stirring up the hornets nest so to say, and looking for Hermes to donate a bag to each member of her show taping for the first show of the Fall, kinda like the car giveaway. Who knows though? Like others have pointed out I can not imagine someone on her staff did not call ahead to announce the queens arrival. She should of handed them a copy of her magazine with her ugly mug on each and every copy of the cover. Even Martha stays off a cover or two of her magazine. Not Oprah! Every time I am in a place with her magazine I turn it over to hide her face.

I have heard nothing of a "big entourage". If that is indeed true, I haven't heard it. I thought it was Oprah and her girlfriend, Gayle King. I guess one or two others might have been along, but that is speculation.

I could give two hoots if she showed up after the store closed and they wouldn't let her in. It's happened to us all. There are still people in the store, but someone is standing at the door letting the in-store shoppers out, but not letting new shoppers in. No big deal. Maybe bad PR if they knew it was Oprah, but who knows.

BUT, if it is true that the "door keeper" said they have been having a problem with North African women and THAT is why she was denied entry. BIG problem. Apparently, Gayle King confirmed that is what happened.

Maybe I'm getting senile, but I seem to recall a similar scenario a few years ago when Oprah was denied entry to some store on Madison Avenue in NYC.
In those high end stores, you have to buzz to be let in, and apparently she wasn't allowed in. I recall at the time that the concern of the merchants (in other stores), that some people (in groups) would "rush the store" in large numbers and steal whatever they could real fast. No time to call the police.

I can't be sure the above scenario involved Oprah, but it was most certainly a very high profile african american woman.

Regardless, I tend to believe Oprah. I see no reason whatsoever why she would fabricate this incident. The woman has more money than God.

I liked what Rosie O'Donnell said on her blog:

“Oprah describes it as
one of the most humiliating
moments of her life.”

and who would know better than gayle

i cannot wait to hear
all the details -
one of the most humiliating moments of her life…
oprah
a poor overweight
sexually abused
troubled black female child
from a broken home -
that oprah
sufferred ONE of the most HUMILIATING momemts of HER life
at hermes in paris

hmmmmm

That said, I currently work in retail and it is not all that uncommon for stores to open for specific people. Today I just had a Sunglass Hut in Georgetown (1 of 2 locations in the area) open for me, because I wanted something in the other store!

That was the point, a meaningless gesture for a meaningless event.

If Oprah wants to "be every woman", then why is she shocked when she is treated like every woman. I guess she was thinking that she is every woman who happens to be worth about $ 1.1 Billion who should get everything she wants when she wants and too bad for the little people who get in her way.

So what happens next time I show up at Target at 10:07 PM and the store is closed??, complain don't they know that my family income is in the 42nd percentile and I NEED that package of Tang. What they will not let me in??, why this is an outrage!.

I guess what Oprah means by "one of the most humiliating moments of her life", is that it is one of most humiliating since she became an internationally known celebrity worth upwards of $1 billion with multiple homes and a private jet.

Like I said it does happen for clients that are "known". But, I was talking about boutique stores (like Hermes), not mega-stores like Target and Kmart. Whoever was at the door probably did not recognize her. Anyway it was blown out of proportion, opening a store after-hours is a courtesy.

Arkhem, you are absolutely right. Stores like Hermes are known for doing "anything" for the rich and famous. And no Ihadapheo... You cannot compare Hermes with Target. And no... I'm pretty sure you are not as rich nor as famous as Oprah...
