Only In Milwaukee... 14 Pound Baby Born!

Thu Jun 30, 2005 3:44 am

Smile Parents call their baby the Big Enchilada!

http://www.medpagetoday.com/tb/OBGYN/Pregnancy/1286

MEQUON, Wis., June 29-The third child in a family of remarkably big babies was the biggest of all, tipping the scales at 6,250 grams, according to John Waeltz, M.D., the mother's Milwaukee ob-gyn. The mother tested negative repeatedly for gestational diabetes.

The new baby, who was born slightly jaundiced but otherwise healthy, with an Apgar score of 8 and 9, came home to this Milwaukee suburb yesterday after three days of light therapy for mildly elevated bilirubin, said Dr. Waeltz.

Paul and Robin Buzzell displayed their "Big Enchilada" on national TV. The mother, a nurse, is of normal size, at five feet, seven inches. Her husband is six feet two inches.

Cameron, their first child, now four, weighed 11 pounds, eight ounces, and their second child, Alexis, now two, weighed 10 pounds, eight ounces. Their new sister, Delaney Jessica, was 13 pounds, 12 ounces.

During the first pregnancy, said Dr. Waeltz, the mother had a one-hour 50 gram glucose screening at 24 weeks, which was normal. During her second pregnancy, she had another one-hour screening, which was normal, and a three-hour oral glucose tolerance test after a 100 gram glucose load, which was also normal. In her third pregnancy, she had two glycosylated hemoglobin tests, one immediately after birth. Both HbA1C readings were under 6.

During the third pregnancy, Mrs. Buzzell gained nearly 50 pounds.

In Dr. Waeltz's eyes, the most remarkable feature of Delaney Jessica's size is that she was born three weeks early, unlike some large babies who are born late. Nevertheless, he pointed out, any baby over 5 kg is rare, and this one was 6.25 kg.

He noted that there was a 17-pound baby born in Brazil in January who had a number of postnatal complications.

Hopefully Superfly's fingers were busted too so we don't have to deal with his posts for awhile either.  Wink

Wow!

Damn, my kids were both over 9 lbs, but mom was borderline gestational diabetic, which typically adds to baby weight. Not uncommon, but incredible that it wasn't a factor for this woman.

Good news for WI- the Packers could use some help on the interior d-line.  Smile

Hey, my dear old Dad weighed roughly that when he was born, Lord knows how my tiny grandmother managed to push him out...or even carry him around in the first place!!

Not only did she manage that feat, but she did it in the middle of a South London snowstorm on June 21st (gotta love the British summer)! We're made of strong stuff in my family ya know!

When I worked as a nurse in a local hospital, it wasn't unusual to have ten pound babies born. A six pounder would be considered a lightweight. I think there have been research studies done to figure out why Wisconsin has so many big babies. Most of them grow up to be normal-sized kids.

Because we have big ass woman. If you want to do some research go to an Old Country Buffet in Janesville or Beloit and you can watch as the heffers park up next to the fried food bar and stay for hours on end.  Wow!

I was 9 pounds at birth.
Gary, Indiana shares Lake Michigan with Wisconsin too.
Perhaps that may have something to do with it.  Confused
