How The British Army Stays Entertained In Al-Faw

Sat Jul 02, 2005 7:39 am

Since they had difficulty in getting enough USO and British equiv. acts to come down there they made their own album. Here's their first video with a nice cover of "Road to Amarillo".

My wife sent this to me....she's cool.

Thanks-I actually saw that a while ago. I liked the one on Bigboys.com where the Norwegians (I think) made a parody of the Beach Boys "Kokomo" into "Kosovo"  Smile

I just watched it again.....and its even better the second time. Its like a movie where you see stuff you missed the first time.

Look at the guy with the short G-36...that's gotta be a RM Cdo. The two squaddies dressed as Bedouins.... this is a classic. They had to rehearse and stage the whole thing.

They had all branches in there, RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps), REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, the guys in the motorpool with the torque wrenches), RASC (Royal Army Service Corps, the guys with the jerrycans and the vegetable boxes in front of the freezer containers), and even a bloke with an AK.

The other one L-188 posted seems to have been footage of a f*cked up RM exercise, where they tried to impress a girl, who was taping it (you can hear here giggle) and ended up in two feet of mud...

It was the guys with the AK and the G-36.....neither of which are standard issue anywhere in the regular forces that make me think this is a RM motor pool/base

Actually the whole thing was taped by a armoured unit, the Royal Dragoon Guards.

BTW, the British equivalent of USO is the ENSA.

Jan,
I saw no armour vehicles in the motor pool, more I saw Rovers and a piece of light arty. How are you certain? Not really challenging you as much as trying look for the clues.

I got this information from the British army site I mentioned to you. Some guys on the site know the guys who made the movie. BTW, the site got overrun after this clip came out. It also overloaded the serves at the British MOD Big grin

If the U.S. military did something like this I wonder how many of you would still say "thanks for sharing", " thumbsup ", "hahah", i"t's great", etc...?

You would be calling them insensitive, arrogant, racist, time wasting, and the like.

Hypocrites some of you are. And yes, yes, it was a great video too!

'Nuff said.

I call it as I see it Aloges. I call it as I see it. So if and when the U.S. Military comes out with an equally humorous video I will look for you to say "Great! Thanks for sharing." I'll be watching but I wont hold my breath.

You have to see it in the context of how that song was used in the UK, fronted by a well liked comedian (Peter Kay), in a video for the annual Comic Relief charity effort, it was a piss take of that, that lead guy in the Army video was chosen as he most closely resembled Peter Kay.

The Army top brass thought it funny, as did both Kay and Tony Christie, who sung the song back in the 70's and for the Peter Kay video this year.

You must also remember that the sort of pounding music, air punching rallying that you sometimes see from the US forces, (remember that Admiral as Iraq started up "It's hammer time"), is really seen as vulgar, simplistic and frankly rather disturbing over here.

One way of seeing this difference was in the nose art on aircraft in the 1991 Gulf War, not many US aircraft had any, those that did were mostly beautifully rendered Eagles, flags etc, the more numerous RAF nose art were mostly of cartoon characters from the popular adult satirical comic 'Viz', such as 'The Fat Slags', 'Buster Gonad And His Unfeasibly Large Testicles', 'Johnny Fartpants', as well as some stylized ladies, which a few USAF aircraft also had.

Jan, RASC was replaced by ROAC in the 60's, since the early 90's much of the Army transport/logistics effort now comes under a single Royal Logistic Corps regiment.

L-188, whatever you do, don't tell any Royal Marine he is part of the Army!

GDB,

I knew that back in WW2 there existed the Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC, responsible for ammo supply etc.) and the Royal Army Service Corps (RASC, foods, clothes, fuel etc.). So I understand these two corps were combined? Under what name? And later they got their name changed again into RLC? Royal Logistics Corps?

Actually they were 29 Commando Royal Artillery (Army unit attached to 3 Commando Brigade) who tried to copy the Royal marines which didn't quite work. And it wasn't a girl recording it. I think you might have offended someone there  wink

Those insensitive arrogant Americans! THIS is why Iraq is so screwed up and there are so many civilian deaths - they're singing and dancing instead of paying attention. Wait...they're Brits? Aw, hell, that's the second time that's happened!

Good luck to them. Morale is very important. Remember, most political correctness isn't from Arabs or Muslims, its from stupid white people who THINK they know what offends other people. Quite often it doesn't, and for example my Muslim friends get more offended by people assuming they somehow like to be treated differently just because they are Muslims. They go to restaurants which also serve pork, and will come to the bar with me and have orange juice whilst I have a beer - no big deal. I was in Karachi this January and without exception all the people I talked to thought that it was right to get rid of Saddam, so don't believe evrything you see on CNN. It isn't as "us" and "them" as some people like to think.
