VW Driver?

Sun Jul 03, 2005 4:54 am

Say hi. Here's a 2 month-old picture of my 2005 Jetta IV Wagon. I'm slowly, but surely, moding it. Feel free to post pictures, too.

I love VW, and I love my 96 Vanagon. And that year looks a lot like 69 IMO.

No, it is the pull starter.

TDI or petrol engine? Try the TDI, if in any way possible, you're going to love it!

Here's one more I took today at Huntington Park, Newport News, VA.

And this one, also taken today, was at Newport News Shipbuilding. The orange/red object in the background is the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, George H. W. Bush CVN-78, under construction there.

Aloges, if I correctly assume that Mir is living in the U.S, then the only option is a gasoline engine. Volkswagen pulled the TDI from the U.S. market some time ago and only reintroduced the TDI very recently (2004 or 2005 model year).

I know with like 98% certanty that there are no 2001-build TDI state side.

Re: New Beatle police cruiser. Who in their right mind would select a flipin New Beatle for any utility task? Geeks on Call is bad enough, but the New Beatle is one thing only, a teenage girl car. It is a pitiful small car especially compared to other VW products like the Golf and Jetta.

Why the heck does the car have 3 feet of headroom and only 3 inches of leg room?

I don't know about the Passat, but the Jetta (Bora) has always been available as a TDI, at least here in Canada and I would assume that it was no different in the US (could be wrong though). I took one out for a test drive in December 2001. The funny thing is, you see alot of Jetta's up here and I'd say 95% of them are TDI's. I guess, since VW are the only cars available as diesels.

On a side note, I had a 1997 VW Passat Combi (wagon) when I was living in Germany, it wasn't a diesel and when I left, she had 250,000 km on her and purred like a kitten.

The only thing that bothers me about VW is that for some reason, one of the lightbulbs is always broken. As soon as you replace one, another goes out. And if you're driving on the Autobahn, you see a car with only one tail light, chances are it's a VW.

I might be getting one soon! I want a Golf-TDI but they are hard to come across. I am praying for one. If I get it, I will post a picture here! Wish me luck!

It's a petrol engine. TDI isn't very popular in the US, and is actually is banned in several states (NY, CA and MA, plus maybe a few others). Since I'll probably be buying the car in NY, TDI is out of the question.

I'm comparing the Passat with an older, but cheaper, Volvo V70 XC. Right now, I'm leaning towards the Volvo because of its all-wheel drive, which is going to come in handy in the North Dakota winter.

The question of getting a TDI is also a question of being even raped more at the pump in the USA.

I realize that the Golf is not very popular in North America and the Jetta (Bora) is not very popular in Europe. But why is it that the new models of the Golf take almost 2 years after their European release to finally be available here? I remember the Golf 4 taking about 1 1/2 years to finally reach our show rooms. Are they even planning to produce the Golf 5 for the American market? Or are they just staying with the Jetta?

FlyMIA,

Nice work there, those things are awesome. A rare site in the UK due to the hefty price tag, but at the same time it looks gorgeous. Big grin

As Flynavy said, Great example there BigMac. Nice choice of colour and trim, it looks very pimping!  Wink

Looking forward to some more VW pics!

Hey Justin,

Think a silver trim like FlyMIA's would go well on my Jetta? Welcome to my respected user list.

I can't remember where I read it, but the V10 TDi engine for this vehicle had to be detuned because it produces so much torque - enough to damage the chassis if I remember correctly!

I'm not sure if that was the Touareg or the Phaeton, but either way the V10 TDi produces 553 lbs/ft for both vehicles! Big grin

By my book, that is an incredible amount of pulling power. Our 110 TDi Bora produces 173 lbs/ft, and that feels QUICK, I can't imagine what the V10 is like!

Golf 5 is being produced here in South Africa, I drove the new GTI a couple of weeks ago and it is a rocket! One thing that really impressed me was the lack of turbo lag and the immediate pull in any gear from any engine speed, even in 6th gear. I currently drive a 3 series BMW and the GTI is the first car I have driven that might tempt me away from buying another Beemer!
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

I'm on my second jetta and I absolutley love it. (Both were V6). My first one I crashed hitting a guardrail going 80mph on I10 between San Antonio and Houston. Airbags didn't deploy but I almost walked away without a scratch. Gotta love VW's.
