On Top Of The Auto Food Chain : New S-Class Benz

Wed Jul 06, 2005 4:36 pm

So what do you think ?

Not bad except for the absence of lateral rubber strips, the rear looks like a Maybach  Smile
The interior reminds me of the 7-series and the iDrive thingy.

The front looks hot! The back will take some getting used to. All in all, I like it! I hope what's under the hood is nice too.

Is that this week's new Merc ? I swear, even down here where every third car is a Mercedes, you never see two Merc's that look the same (except taxis) - do they revamp their entire product line every month ? Seriously, they must have an awful brand image problem, if it is impossible to clearly distinguish their products. I think a little product line simplification might be in order.

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, available from Mercedes-Benz outlets and authorized dealerships in autumn 2005, will cost EUR 70,760 (ex-works) for the S 350 with V6 petrol engine (200 kW/272 hp), and EUR 89,668 (ex-works) for the S 500 V8 model (285 kW/388 hp). From Quarter 1, 2006, Mercedes-Benz will launch the S 320 CDI (173 kW/235 hp) as the perfect, albeit less powerful addition to the new S-Class. The new twelve-cylinder S 600 Saloon will also be launched in 2006.

It's very similar to that of the BMW 7-series, if not the same. The gear selector is located behind the steering wheel on the right hand side, it's visible in the 3rd photo, something black popping out behind the wheel.

Totally agree, I thought Benz would stay away from this system, it makes the console looks really cheap with the absence of keys and switches.

I'm sure it will be a marvellous car - now MB just need to do something about their increasingly poor build quality and their appallingly bad dealer network (in the UK).

sadly the build quality has taken the shine off the 3-pointed star of late....

Looks cheap!  vomit

A car in that price range should have 'distinctive' styling.

Toyota Century

That Mercedes S-class looks like a bloated Chevy Lumina or Ford 500.

I wonder if MB hired a designer away from Nissan? The flanks of the car, particularly the fender flares, look to be straight off a Pathfinder.

The front is acceptable given its traditional appearance, but the rest of the exterior looks WAY downmarket. The interior does appear to be a 7-series rip-off (and even as a BMW lover, I will say that is NOT a good thing IMO).

Why couldn't they take a chance and "go retro"...

I love it. It is a step forward and still retains the 'smooth look' instead of BMW's new origami approach.

I have an S500 now, and am likely to consider a new one after seeing these pics!

I have an SL380 convertible and an S500 Sedan with the long wheel base, as well as a few other goodies.  Smile

Oh yes, the SL 380 was around in the early 1980s. Those look coolest with the body color wheel covers. I like them in brown, pea soup green or puke yellow.  Cool

When of if that 3.8 engine goes out, see if you could drop in the 6.9 liter V8.  bigthumbsup
It would totally fit and you'd have a ballsy roadster.

The rear end reminds me of a Hyundai Elantra...and the interior reminds me of the BMWs.

Seems to me the Germans have a contract with the Koreans Big grin

Im sure it will be a fine automobile though..

As an S500 driver until a few weeks ago I really like the exterior styling, although not so keen on what appears to be the iDrive and 7 Series inspired interior. I preferred the interior of the facelifted S Class that was brought out a couple of years ago.

The way the boot protrudes out from behind the rear lights reminds me of a six series.

They were doing so well until they got to the back.....

The current one looks much better IMHO.

YUCK! I can't stand what they've done around the wheel area. When did fenders come back in? It looks like a cheap Japanese knock-off. They basically stole the interior from the BMW 7 series, note the navigator joystick for the GPS/ClimateControl/CD/Radio.

Is it just me or does Mercedes make the absolute most boring looking cars? especially for the price range they shoot for.

No it's not just you. I was saying the same thing.
The Germans need to borrow styling cues from the French, British and of course the U.S.A. if they want to make a car that looks good too.

I think their strategy is a little different than the competition. They introduce a model - and stay with it for 6-8 years, making only minor improvements along the way.

Some brands make more radical changes to their designs and they end up looking trendy. The problem with trends is that they tend to die very quickly.

Case in point: Cadillac. This whole knife-edge thing they're doing right now is not going to last. It's a little too hip to have any staying power.

I love that look, and I'm already wishing I had the $50,000 required to get a black CTS-V.

Very true, but once upon a time; Mercedes had distinctive styling and staying power.
Case in point: Your SL roadster. That design lasted over 20 years and will always have style.

Don't get my blood pressure up!
I've been down on Cadillac and all of GM every since they got rid of the Fleetwood Brougham and all other B-bodies to crank out more SUVs.
Talk about adding insult to injury!  Sad

True - but Capt was pointing out the 'boring' look of the new Benz. The old SL's were never boring.  Smile Smile

In three years, you'll only need about $5000 to buy one.
They drop in value real fast and half of them will have been repossessed by then as there will be a new 'bling-bling' Caddy in the rap videos.

Very classy!
