How To Tell What Graphics Card I Have

Sat Jul 09, 2005 3:15 pm

I was just about to go buy a computer game, when I thought it would be wise to see if my computer could handle it. It requires a nVidia G-Force or a ATI Radeon card. I am not sure what my Sony Vaio has, but I have not been able to use such programs like Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 because of my graphics card. So, how can I find out what I have?

Start > Run> Dxdiag > Display Tab

It will say there what you have.

Belarc Advisor is so handy for doing jobs like this (and anything else hardware related)

Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

Excellent program!!!

I would go to the game's website as sometimes, even thought they say AIT/N-Vidia on the box, they (inside the box/online) say specific models, and usually list models with specific issues. But if you are thinking about any other video games down the road you might want to cross compare if you have to go shopping for a new video card.

Well I have a

nVidia Riva TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro
32 MB
and DirectX of 9.0c

The requriements for the game are that you must have DirectX 9, 32MB, and T&L compatible (what ever that is). I do have all of that, (but not sure about T&L compatible, how do I find that out?), but on the website, it has a list of supported video cards though.

* ATI RadeonTM series (7000 or better)
o Radeon 7000/VE series (non-T&L; requires 2.0 GHz processor)
o 7200, 7500
o 8500, All-In-Wonder 8500
o 9000, 9200, 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800
o X300, X600, X800

* Nvidia QuadroTM series
o Quadro, Quadro2, Quadro4

* Nvidia Geforce series (GeForce2 and better)
o GeForce2
o GeForce3, 3 Ti
o GeForce4, 4Ti, MX 420, 440
o GeForce FX 5200, 5600, 5700, 5800, 5900, 5950
o GeForce 6600, 6800

* Intel Extreme Graphics (non-T&L; requires 2.0 GHz processor)
o 82845, 82865, 82915

Mine obviously isn't there, but would it still work?

If you have a Radeon, you have one of the best. I have the 9500. There is a 9800. I don't know if there is anything better than the Radeon.

And thus starts the R V. N thread...

TNT2 cards are pretty old, so if you don't see it listed, I'd guess that you can't. If you want to try anyway, check the store's return policy to see if you can return it (I know CompUSA will only give a store credit for open software) if it doesn't work.

What game are you trying to play? The minimum system requirements are what you need in order to run a slide show of the game. Your computer will run as slow as the slowest part, so other things can be holding it back also.

What kind of proccesor do you have? How much RAM? IS your videocard AGP or PCI?
